I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. And work rarely ended before nine or ten at night. “The fumes in the stone-polishing factory were such that I would choke and feel suffocated all day long. There was a time when I fell from the first floor and had I not caught onto the railing, I am not sure what would have happened. Students who belong to economically disadvantaged families have limited opportunities when it comes to a career because there are few financial resources and education is of low quality. Realising this, Vidya Poshak, established in 2001, intervened to help to create a bright future for thousands of students.We have developed a set of unique methods to easily identify bright students who are nurtured until they complete their higher education and then are helped in finding a job.We have two programmes established; the first is Nurture Merit, which supports 10th grade students from economically challenged backgrounds into higher education until they graduate and find employment. The second is a Graduate Finishing School, our initiative to train economically disadvantaged graduates from rural areas in vocational skills to ensure they find employment in the service sector.

Indrakumar is native to a small village in Sirsi Taluk, Uttara Kannada district. After completing SSLC, he dreamt of taking science in PUC but his financial situation meant paying for college just wasn’t feasible.

After coming by information on Vidya Poshak, he filled in our application form for 2006-07. His home visit was carried out by Mr. Ashok Bhat one our volunteers and was subsequently admitted into M.E.S. PU College, Sirsi to study science. While we kept him motivated everyday, it was through his hard work that saw him bag 92% in his exams.

Vidya Poshak helps students not only by providing financial assistance once a year but also by providing books with our own library. The library is so wonderful that students get books irrespective of what course they are studying; from PUC to the completion of their degree.

Now Indrakumar has completed B.E. at KLS’s VDRIT, Haliyal under VTU with an aggregate exam percentage of 84%. Excitingly, he is now working for SONY and we couldn't be prouder of his achievements.

Disadvantaged students face many obstacles when trying to pursue an education. The expense to go to school combined with their parents expectations for their children to work and earn a living, means many discontinue their education. This leads to poor employment options in the future.In a country like India, where the majority of the population are youths, the overall effect of this problem multiplies. Societies progress and the economies growth rate both deteriorate as so many people are uneducated. 
 We have started an initiative to support bright but underprivileged students post the 10th grade to pursue further studies in literacy; leading to employment. We cover the cost of scholarships, books, and all skill training.Each student is carefully selected based upon academic performance and economic assessments. Our volunteers visit student’s homes to get a better understanding of their financial situation. As we have such a big network of volunteers covering a vast area, we can ensure that we reach as many students as possible. 
 Through our efforts and the support of others like you, more than 5000 students have received employment through Vidya Poshak and over 4000 students have reached the next level of literacy. Also, 60 free of cost rural book banks have been opened where students can borrow books and educational material.

Provide opportunities to deserving underprivileged students

Due to incessant heavy rains in North Karnataka, almost all the villages of Belgaum, Bijapur, Uttara Kannada, and Dharwad are flood-hit, and most of the families have lost all their belongings, with their houses being severely damaged. Immediate rescue and relief efforts are being taken care of by the government and the Indian army. NGOs and the general public are helping out with the basic needs of food, drinking water, clothing, and the health needs of the families in the shelter homes. The school-going children of these flood-affected regions have lost all their study materials, books, bags, and uniforms. 
 Vidya Poshak is working for the empowerment of the student community of rural North Karnataka since the past 18 years. We are well connected with all the remote rural schools and know their requirements. The Vidya Poshak team is acting to make sure that the children of all the four flood-affected districts are back to school with a happy mind by replacing all their lost items.We will be working to provide rehabilitation to school children of 100 schools from the affected talukas of Belgaum, Raibag, Khanapur, Gokak, Hubli, Dharwad, Yellapura, Karwar, and Sirsi. 
 The timely interventions provided will help the school children gain a sense of belonging and will build confidence in their minds. We are aiming to impact 10,000 children from 100 schools of the flood-affected districts of Belgaum, Bijapur, Dharwad and Uttara Kannada.

Manjappa Kammar is a brilliant student who secured 93.9% in 10th grade. He comes from a rural area in Dharwad district, and sadly lost both his parents at a very early age. He has four siblings, all of whom are being taken care of by his aunt, who works as a coolie. Her earning is the only source of income for the family. Manjappa is a hard working boy who wants to pursue higher studies. However, owing to the poor financial conditions, the family is finding it difficult to support his ambition. 
 Manjappa has taken admission for 11th grade in Science stream at J. S. S. College, Dharwad and is in need of financial assistance to fulfil his dream of higher education. Our primary aim is to bring students who discontinued their schooling back on the path of education. The project is focused on raising funds for Manjappa to help him achieve the goals of his life. 
 So far our efforts combined with the support of generous donors like you have helped more than 5000 students into employment and over 4000 students reach the next level of literacy. Now it is time to overcome the adverse financial circumstances preventing Manjappa from continuing his education. Every donation will directly sponsor his educational needs for a year.
