"My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. After being thrown out of their often abandoned by their own children and are forced to beg for food and shelter. “Through Project Jeevan, Maitri houses aging widow mothers in two ashrams in Vrindavan and Radhakund (Mathura), providing them with wellness and well-being. The programme also reaches out to widow mothers beyond the ashrams with fruit, milk and healthcare services,” explains Winnie Singh, co-founder and executive director, Maitri India.Save homeless elderly widows from begging on the streetsMost widows who make their way to Vrindavan are abandoned by their families, often after years of abuse. They come here hoping they will spend the rest of their days in prayer and devotion. But most live in impoverished conditions on the streets and in dingy rooms. We are working to build one of the largest inclusive global communities in STEM. Through carefully-developed ecosystems, we can eradicate inequalities and help even the most marginalized-- those who must innovate to survive-- to actually thrive in STEM careers. The world faces so many new scientific challenges, and we believe the solutions to these lie in bringing new minds to the table. Our humble beginnings are rooted in a volunteer movement started in 2015 by Indian graduate students based across the globe to take the magic of hands-on science to the remotest corners of India. We have engaged 14,000+ school and college students and trained several researchers in science popularization through 55+ workshops across the length and breadth of India. A strong foundation in STEM is essential for equipping youth with the quality to solve a range of complex problems. Problem solvers from a range of backgrounds with quality hands-on exposure in STEM and skills are imperative to shape development for India's last mile. Learning by doing or hands-on experiential learning is one of the most efficient ways to shape STEM skills for young students. In-fact, in India, as many as 6 out of 10 (60%) colleges are located in rural areas with an acute shortage of infrastructure and human resources. A rural student receives less than 5 opportunities/year to experience practical hands-on learning in STEM through high school to graduation. With the ongoing pandemic, these challenges are exacerbated for the rural students both colleges and schools. VigyanShaala is Building Innovative Ecosystems in partnership with rural colleges and schools to bridge this learning divide. 
 At VigyanShaala, we are democratising opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) by closing the access, attainability and quality gap in STEM education. Through our unique data drive approach to identify key barriers, cross age peer-mentoring and nurturing local undergraduates as community role models we are bridging the learning divide for rural students. In a year, STEM Fellow receives 24 Mentoring sessions from Vigyanshaala’s vetted global pool of professionals, 150 hours of training, undertakes 2 research projects and reaches 100+ school students. This comprehensive experience builds STEM skills, independent creative thinking, extensive professional development and community leadership. Our STEM fellow/s acts as local role model/s reaching schools catering to extremely marginalised communities. Hence, attaining scale while remaining sensitive to the local variables. Through STEM fellows, each school will receive ~10 outreach sessions, assistance in learning and support from VigyanShaala in identifying young talent and nurturing early on.

VigyanShaala STEM Fellowship for rural youth

In India, 2 out of 3 girls that study Science and Engineering at university in India do not end up in the workforce. Despite having the highest percentage (48.8%) of female STEM ( Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) graduates globally, India severely lags behind the global average (29.3%) with only 14% female participation in STEM workforce. Lack of Visible role models, Gender Stereotypes insufficient STEM experience, and socio-cultural challenges dent their confidence. Thus pushing them out through the ‘Leaky pipeline’.  Due to these challenges, women (including postgraduates) who do secure jobs quickly fall through the cracks in the formative years. The leaky pipeline for women in STEM exists, especially when transitioning into jobs or continuing to higher STEM careers. The economic cost of the leaky pipeline is severe since the innovation, technology, perspectives, and demands of half the population are extensively overlooked. 
 Acknowledging the problems endured by women of the modern world, we designed the program “KALPANA” of VigyanShaala. Kalapana aims to bridge the gender gap in STEM disciplines by widening the access to opportunities for every aspiring undergraduate girl in STEM. It’s design stresses mentoring, career development, and research experience to successfully place every fellow on a high confidence STEM path. Thanks to a rigorous scientific approach coupled with personal experiences of the core team of women in STEM from various backgrounds, VigyanShaala has expertise and  understanding that can help girls thrive in STEM careers. Kalpana is the outcome of a passionate and data-driven approach to creating free access to science for all girls regardless of their backgrounds. Kalpana has embarked on fixing the “leaky pipeline”  in STEM. We are actively working on various challenges faced by women in STEM.  The true impact of what we are doing will be when you go to the doctor and she is one of our inspiring alumni, or the next breakthrough in healthcare, energy storage or the best gadgets are invented by a young Indian who was mentored by VigyanShaala's Kalpana.  Until that day, we are proud to say we haveMentored 1250+ girls from 80+ districts across 20 Indian states with the help of 100 global mentors based across 15 countries . As one of our Kalpana fellows, put it, “I've cleared some of my queries troubling me ever since I started college. I've met many different people from different fields, learned many things from them. Kalpana sure is gonna leave an imprint in my life. Every mentor, coordinator and people here are very reassuring and dependable. It feels like I can do anything with so many people by my side” ! Girls who were too shy to speak at all, are now engaging in exciting STEM debates and discussing and collaborating on exciting projects with their peers across India. Looking ahead we aim to build an integrated platform for mentoring-coaching, performance tracking and partnerships management for internship opportunities for fellows. We have set ourselves an audacious goal to mentor and nurture 10,000 girls by 2023 while preparing a strong tech foundation for scale to 1 Million girls by 2030 with quality mentoring, STEM training and career coaching.
