In the dark and dingy alleys of red light areas, injustice, pain and suffering run rampant. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. He has further supported over 20,000 children with a better life.Sadly, Of the 250 the children rescued from abuse and exploitation, around 70 of them are HIV positive. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. His NGO Snehalaya to date has transformed the lives of millions. Girish’s work is crucial for the survival and safety of vulnerable children of sex workers. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. Every child is their parents' ultimate hope. The pain of a parent to see their child unable to play and learn with other kids is uniquely terrible. Namita Patra, a 15-year-old girl residing in Barimunda, Baulanga, Gop, Puri, faces the challenges of Mental Retardation with Epileptic Seizures. Her family comprises her parents and an elder brother. Her father transitioned from being a driver to a shopkeeper due to the demands of Namita's condition, while her mother takes care of the household. Namita's condition is linked to inadequate prenatal nutrition and the family's past crises, which induced stress. These factors have resulted in her daily life being a struggle, compounded by frequent seizures that have plagued her since the tender age of 3. Prior to receiving project support, Namita's seizures worsened when medication was discontinued. This unfortunate circumstance led to a decline in her school attendance, as she battled memory loss and struggled with concentration issues. However, with the implementation of project support, Namita's life has taken a turn for the better. Consistent medication has significantly reduced the frequency of her seizures, allowing her to attend school regularly and progress to the 8th grade. She has made strides in her independent reading skills, mastered basic mathematics, and can now perform daily tasks with more ease and proficiency. Medication remains a key component of her routine, in accordance with the doctor's guidance. Notably, Namita's newfound sense of well-being has also translated into her social interactions. She has become more sociable, cooperative, and readily lends a helping hand to those in need. Her family's outlook has brightened, and they are hopeful for a brighter future for Namita.
