“I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. Vimukti Sanstha is a registered society (No. 204/Jaipur,04-05) providing free education, vocational training and career development opportunities to vulnerable, less-privileged girls dwelling in urban-slum areas.Moved by witnessing that daughter of her domestic help was discriminated against her brother and not sent to school, Ms. Lavalina Sogani started Vimukti Sanstha in 2004 with 20 girls to combat and overcome the discrimination against the girl child through literacy and education.Parents of most of the girls are daily wage earners and hence do not have a regular income. Alcoholism is rampant amongst men in such families and the financial burden of providing for the family ends up on women. Mothers of most of our students work as domestic help, earn barely enough to take care of their families basic needs. 95% of the students at Vimukti are from socially backward classes including minority communities.

Slums of Jaipur suffer from abysmally low living conditions, health and sanitation, compounded by social ills such as drug abuse and crimes against women. Discrimination against young girls is embedded in the culture and is reinforced by poverty. Main barrier is the attitude of poverty-stricken parents who keep them at home watching over siblings or involve them in low skill tasks for meagre wages.When we started the school in 2004, initially, no fee was charged and it was thought to be a good reason to bring girls to school as paying fee for a girl child was, and still is considered a huge financial burden which either parents are not willing to bear, or do not have the capacity to bear. But soon we realised that there are other elements which cost money, such as books and uniform. There was a reluctance on the part of parents as the movement to and fro from school involved cost; not just the tangible i.e, the cost of transport, but also the intangible(if they were to drop the children themselves, they would lose their daily wage and sending girls on their own was a big risk). Plus in some cases, there was a loss of wage to be earned by the girls. 
 Our approach has been to remove the hindrances which parents face , economically and otherwise, in sending their girls to school. Thus, we provide free education (zero tuition fee), free uniforms, free books and stationery, free meals and subsidized transport to all the students. Since we run afternoon shifts in the premises of another school, girls get time in the morning hours to finish household chores or to help their mothers in tailoring, or any other work.As health of girls is of least importance in the community, they do not get required nourishment-we give them milk and fruits in school. And this, for some girls, is the only meal they have in the entire day. 
 Initially, VGS was looked upon merely as a place where girls got free meals. But as girls learnt to read and write, helped their parents with mathematical calculations. reading newspaper/letters, parents started to realize the importance of girl education. Parents, especially fathers’ interest and involvement in the schooling of their girls has increased. Parent teachers’ meetings now have 85-90% attendance. Barring one or two cases, parents do not hurry to marry off their girls anymore. Removing financial burden of parents in sending their daughters did help us attract them to school but our aim was not just to get numbers, we started focussing on quality. This becomes essential as the students have no learning support at their homes.The school has introduced many quality elements including conducting subject based and general pedagogy trainings for teachers, setting up of subject based labs and a book club, initiation of digital learning solutions, training in dance and organisation of Annual Day and Sports Day, conduction of counselling sessions and storytelling sessions.The fact that we lose our students to other schools which admit them in higher grades because of their academic quality is worrisome but at the same time speaks of our qualitative input with the girls.
