For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Agriculture activities and the movement of goods have been disrupted due to Covid-19. To add to that, the recent Nivar Cyclone affected weather patterns inland, leading to low yields or loss of crops due to unseasonal rains. Disrupted yields mean the women work long, hard hours yet receive a pittance for their produce or it goes waste for want to buyers. 
 We'll help women already producing organic crops turn those crops into products like pickles, sauces or condiments. We'll collaborate with them to pick the particular products and recipes to prepare in order to maximize their return and train them to prepare and market those products. Because canning minimizes food waste, maximizes the value of the crop, and allows for wider marketing, we hope to increase the women's income 25%. 
 Empowering rural women to run their own businesses and increase their income will enable them to send their children to school and obtain adequate health care. As the sangams establish their businesses and learn from one another, they can share their knowledge and inspire others to follow in their footsteps. The multiplier effect will spread more income throughout the village. Preserving produce to amplify its value is an idea that must take root wherever there are women farmers in distress.

Help Tamil Nadu's women farmers recover from COVID losses

Nutrition and Food are challenging sectors among tribal people, Persons with disabilities comprise at least 4 to 8 percent of the Indian population. Children with disabilities in India are subject to multiple deprivations and limited opportunities in several dimensions of their lives. Their families and caregivers also go through a lot of stress and challenges in having a person with a disability at home, which ultimately leads to grave discriminatory practices towards these children. 
 VOICE Trust provides support to Children especially disabled children to access education, shelter, and healthcare equitably. This project aims to provide shelter for Ilavarasan at a care center in Tiruchirapalli, the nearest city, to support his medical expenses, education, and vocational training. The parents who are tribal peasants are also given the training to handle children with disabilities and assistance to access various government schemes. 
 This project will help many specially-abled children from the remote tribal area to access healthcare and education. This would help the family to attain self-sufficiency in the long run. And also support with nutrition and education for other children who are in lack of getting those aspects.

Health & Edu Supports for Tribal Children in India

As the COVID crisis drags on, women farmers must struggle to find a safe and stable way to grow and sell their produce. Markets across India are disrupted, with each state having its own restrictions, and businesses in Tamil Nadu are again shuttering as the pandemic surges. 
 In the face of such a complex economic disaster, it is hard to find a simple one-size-fits-all solution. So we have decided to work with 5 sangams (self-help groups) formed by women farmers to empower them to solve their own problems in whatever way they decide will work best. They may distribute the money we provide as individual loans or grants, or they may decide on a collective solution. They may choose from one of the options shown -- or they may come up with a better idea. We have faith in them. 
 Used by the women individually, our grants will allow them to transform their farms into thriving enterprises. Used collectively, they will infuse each group with a resource that will yield benefits for years to come. Either way, it will generate additional income that 100 women can use to pay for their children's education, health care, and other critical expenses. This will, in turn, fuel economic recovery for the entire community. And take another step toward reducing gender inequality.

Women's Self-Help Groups are Key to COVID Recovery

India has been reeling from its second wave of COVID 19. Although, thankfully, COVID cases have finally begun to decline, many businesses are still shuttered, leaving millions of farmers, daily wage workers, roadside vendors, sex workers, and small business owners without a source of income. Because malnourishment has become a dangerous problem, relief is needed as soon as possible. 
 Research had shown that simply giving cash grants to those in need is the best way to provide emergency relief. Because it doesn't require field distribution of emergency supplies, relief can be provided more quickly, and the same amount of money goes a lot further. And (and this is what surprised us) because the recipients know best what they need to survive, they actually end up healthier than those who have been helped with emergency food rations. 
 Indrarani was one of the women who recently received a grant from us. Her husband dies recently, leaving her solely responsible for the care of their 1 1/2-year-old daughter. When Indrarani lost her job due to the recent COVID lockdown in Tamil Nadu, the two of them moved in with Indrarani's mother. Although she is eager to work, there are no jobs available in the area. When we gave her the money, she was overcome emotionally, since it meant she could buy medicine for her mother and fresh vegetables for her daughter.Each of the women we will be funding will have different needs, but all of them will find dignity and joy in being able to spend the money on what their families need most.
