For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. VOSARD is a voluntary organization registered under Travancore Kochi Cultural, Scientific, Charitable and Religious Trust Act XII of 1955 with the registration number I-750/98. It is a secular organization and official social work organization of CMI (Carmelites of Mary Immaculate) fathers of St. Joseph’s province, Kottayam. VOSARD was established in the year 1998 with the aim of transforming the lives of poor, marginalized and underprivileged groups in the most backward and remote hilly areas of Idukki District in the western ghat region. Since its inception, the organization has been working with the poor and weaker sections of the society through self help initiatives and by capacitating them to achieve a degree of sustainable development irrespective of caste, creed, and religion. VOSARD strives to promote a society where the marginalized and underprivileged sections in the society are empowered to bring about positive changes in their lives. VOSARD started its work in 1998 in ten remote and rural panchayats of Idukki district considering the substandard living conditions of ordinary people in the area. Gradually, it activities were extended to nearby panchayats and now VOSARD is operational in the entire Idukki district and parts of Kerala.

In Idukki district, the excessive use of pesticides in the plantations and vegetable gardens is posing a threat to the health of locals. Tobacco is the most important identified cause of cancer in the area followed by dietary practices, alcohol consumption, infections due to viruses and sexual behavior. The District Hospital data and reports show that there is an increase number of the people with signs and symptoms of cancer. Lung, blood, breast, throat and intestinal cancers seem to be the most common in the area. The district government hospital reported that 40% of patients comes to the oncology department are with the symptoms of cancer. In last year alone, 260 patients were reported having cancer and precancerous conditions. 
 To identify and build the capacity of community volunteers to promote cancer awareness and preventive care initiative in the block. To provide community health education regarding early symptoms, causes, primary and secondary preventive measures of cancer disease. To sensitize the school children and college going students about the good dietary practices and sensitize the educational institutions to proactively respond to the usage of poly substance abuse.To organize medical camps to diagnose cancer at early stage and guide the patience to access medical care and rehabilitation services with the support of RCC and District Medical Hospital. To sensitize the farmers to promote organic farming in the area. To extend the palliate care to the persons living with the cancer disease through ASHA and health department. To take up advocacy with health and environment departments to minimize the factors influencing cancer disease in the State.There will be only one exclusive staff will be appointed to coordinate the project in front and the VOSARD team would be playing honorary service for the activities like community mobilization, awareness building, campaigning and organizing medical camps etc., along with the community volunteers. The monitoring and evaluation officer will be extending supportive role for periodical monitoring, reporting and documentation. 
 At least 80 % of the community volunteers will be working for the cause with required commitment and leadership potentials. 80 % women group members will be aware of the healthy dietary habits and advocate against the cause that attribute the cancer disease in the area. 70 % of the local high schools and higher educational institutions will be promoting anticancer campaign and monitor the habitual behaviors of their students on a regular basis. 60 % of the farmers proactively responding to the usage of toxic pesticides and fertilizers in their farms. At least 90 % of the suspected cases of cancer symptoms are guided to clinical diagnosis and avail treatment and rehabilitation therapy from affordable hospitals. 80 % caregivers would be providing quality home-based rehabilitation and palliate care to the terminally ill patients. A committed team of medical professionals, community volunteers, local panchayats and NGOs will be actively promoting the work in the area and would play a responsible role in project implementation, mid-course correction and project evaluation aspects.

Cancer prevention through health education and promoting community volunteers in Idukki block of Idukki district

Kerala has been hit by the heaviest monsoon rainfalls since 1924, causing unseen floods and landslides in all districts among the state. Almost 400 people lost their lives and close to one million citizens had to be evacuated to emergency shelters. In Idukki district, one of the poorest and marginalised districts within Kerala, around 80% of the farmers have lost their crops while hundreds of houses and shelters, mostly belonging to some of the poorest families, were destroyed or partially damaged.The Indian government is overwhelmed with the situation and can only arrange for basic immediate relief. Official departments will not be able to sufficiently support the affected population in the long term in reconstructing their houses and existences, which is why additional support through external agencies is strongly needed. 
 In Idukki district, VOSARD has been active since 1998 and over the years could establish a very successful network among the community in the remote villages. This setup ensures an effective and quick supply of needed building materials and crops to repair and reconstruct houses and farm land. 
 For their work VOSARD is fully dependent on project partners which is why the organisation relies on you: especially over the long-term funds are needed to support the displaced and affected families in rebuilding their houses and farm land in order to bring their lives back to normality. The marginalised communities in Idukki district had already been struggling before the floods, and are now suffering the most after this natural disaster.
