“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. “I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. “I want to forget all my pains and torture. I want to live again and earn my living” – Shikha (name changed), 15 years old. Every day, vulnerable men, women and innocent children like Shikha are bought and sold like commodities, abused and forced into commercial sex work, domestic servitude, organ harvesting and bonded or child labour. This is the reality of millions of Indians who are caught in the snare of human trafficking – the buying and selling of human beings for a profit. It is a form of modern-day slavery that has trapped around 8 million people across our country. India is also among the top ten countries with the largest estimated absolute number of people in modern-day slavery. Those victimized are brutally exploited and abused, find themselves enslaved to their captors and robbed of their fundamental right to live a life of dignity and freedom. There is a devastating impact on their physical and mental health leading to them struggling to cope with life in mainstream society, if they are rescued. 
  WMS has been working relentlessly at the grassroots to tackle human trafficking since 2012, with the aim of making all forms of human trafficking and exploitation a rarity.We use a victim centric, end to end approach to ensure rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration of survivors of traffickingand prosecution of the accused. Every survivor’s right to survival, development, protection, justice and participation is ensured through our programmes facilitating diverse multi-stakeholder interventions and partnerships.Our end to end services for survivors include individual care plans, counselling, medical care, education, vocational training, social security and legal assistance. The approach is based on the unique individual requirements of each survivor.

Providing Care and Protection for Survivors of Human Trafficking

India is among the top ten countries with the largest estimated absolute number of people in modern slavery (Global Slavery Index 2018). We’re talking about some of India’s most marginalized communities that are now more vulnerable to victimization than ever before.<blockquote>We need targeted action to protect women, men and children at risk and work against traffickers who are taking advantage of their vulnerability to exploit them.</blockquote>At Vihaan, we use a victim centric, end-to-end approach to ensure rehabilitation and reintegration of survivors of trafficking. Every survivor’s right to survival, development, protection, justice and participation is ensured through our programs facilitating diverse multi-stakeholder interventions and partnerships.Our aftercare services include: Immediate support: Health check-ups, placement in safe custody/shelter homes, trauma assessment, counselling and legal support for the first 3-months.Short term support: Continued medical, legal and psychological support. Individual care plans are initiated. This includes assessment of interests/aptitude, supporting the survivor’s family and facilitating the compensation process for a 6-month period.Long term support: Once individual assessments are carried out, survivors are admitted into our exclusive Foundation Course and Skills Training program. Job assessments and government scheme facilitation is provided. Reintegration and complete restoration support are given to survivors and their families. Follow-ups are carried out over physical meetings/ calls by Vihaan’s trained counsellors and social workers. The legal team continues working towards conviction of the accused and assurance of getting justice and compensation for survivors. While the above support is provided for up to a year, it takes several years to close most cases. Across India, Vihaan continues to support more than 3400 survivors through aftercare. We have rescued more than 5000 victims of trafficking from destination points across India. The interest of each survivor is a critical aspect in all we do with and for them. Through our aftercare support program, Vihaan provides extensive guidance to reintegrate survivors in the best possible way.
