For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. One of them is V Dhanushya, 18, who is studying nursing. “Thaiamma has taken care of me since I was six months old. She promised the mother that she would take care of the baby. “The baby hardly had any strength. She used to be called ‘insect’ by the people in the neighbourhood. The doctor said that she might not survive beyond a month. But she did for over a year, under my care. I named her Shakthi,” recalls Vanitha.Sharanalayam has come a long way since that time, with hundreds of children being taken care of by the NGO in the last two decades. Many have become professionals in various fields, including medical care, engineering, counselling, banking, etc.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of 80 children under its care. With your support, we have managed to perform the following activities in the period April '25 - September '25:<ul><li>Began livelihood mapping and baseline survey of 90 women artisans across the project area</li><li>Initiated infrastructure setup of the "Craft Hub", including essential furniture and fixtures to support production activities</li><li>Began mobilizing women artisans into self-managed producer groups under the community-owned Craft Hub</li><li>Conducted a three-day capacity-building training for 30 women artisans, focused on design improvement, product diversification, and entrepreneurship development</li><li>Provided regular field facilitation and mentoring through the Project Coordinator and Cluster Resource Persons to strengthen artisan engagement and improve product quality.</li><li>Began preparatory work for market-driven product development, packaging, and branding to enhance market access and visibility with women artisans scheduled to participate in various exhibitions next quarter.</li><li>Supported causes, including women’s empowerment, sustainable livelihoods, and preservation of indigenous tribal arts such as Sohrai-Khovar under the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative</li></ul>4 women artisans from the project even showcased their crafts at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, earning national-level recognition and inspiring their community. Our combined efforts have yielded great results so far, but we need to do more to ensure ample appreciation and support for this indigenous industry.
