“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. “I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. At WED Trust we have been working on female related issues in the Madurai district of Tamil Nadu in South India. Everyday 2000 girls are killed in India before they are even born. The girls who do survive face lifelong gender discrimination and limited opportunities to access resources such as education and health care.To check instances of female foeticide, we register and monitor pregnant women in the area until the birth of their child, preventing the murder of 700 unborn girls. We also organise workshops and seminars to build awareness of the different benefits the government offer to families with daughters.We have organised over 2500 women into 145 self help groups. Most of these groups have been linked with banks and other financial institutions so members can receive small loans to invest in income generating activities like goat rearing and dairy farming. With our support and training, members of these self-help groups can become advocates of their rights and lead the social development of their communities.

Petchiammal, 67, lives alone in Jeganathapuram village after the death of her husband and the migration of her son and daughter to areas with better job prospects.

Petchiammal's circumstances forced her to earn a living doing agricultural work just so she could eat. However, her age meant she was unable to attend work every day and often went hungry. Her children found her to be a burden so rarely gave Petchiammal any financial help.

She attended an awareness meeting organised by WED Trust and became a member of the elders self help group. Soon Petchiammal was saving money and requested our help to generate more of an income in order to fulfil her needs. We readily obliged and provided her with two goats.

Petchiammal is very happy now and is able to rear the goats in her village. She has planted trees around her house for collecting green leaves for fodder and can buy herself food buy selling the baby goats. Now her children also feel comfortable when visiting Petchiammal as it is them who depend on their mother for money!

Hema’s family are poverty-stricken and had little interest in her education. Unfortunately, this meant she had to drop out of school in grade 10. Her parents are dalits and landless agricultural labourers who believe that as she is a girl, her education would be an unnecessary expenditure. Especially seeing as though they were actively looking for a husband for Hema.

When WED Trust met her during an adolescent group meeting in her village, she was more animated and interactive than others so easily caught our attention. We counselled her and found that with motivation and support she attend a self employment course. We supported her enrolment into the Alpha Computer Education Centre in Usilampatti and encouraged her to complete the DTP course.

Now Hema is employed as a computer operator at Bharathi Printing Press in Usilampatti, earning Rs. 2500 per month. Her parents weren’t expecting Hema to ever make a living and are now pleased with the results achieved from having an educated daughter. Hema has expressed that going forward she would like to improve her family’s standard of living before she gets married.

Thousands of baby girls are abandoned in India every year, an extension of sex selection practices that includes the killing of 2000 unborn girls every day. The reasons for widespread systematic killing of girls include deep-rooted gender bias, traditional son preference, and the continued practice of dowry (although long prohibited by law). The girls, especially in rural India, who do survive are often treated as an economic burden and denied equal opportunity in education and elsewhere in life. 
 We provide dairy animals to families that have more than one daughter. While it provides them with much-needed economic support, it also works as an incentive for parents to raise daughters.These families rear the cattle, sell its milk, and use them to plough their fields for cropping. The additional income from cattle helps parents to invest in the education and care of their daughters.We also motivate these families to accept their female children as their legal heirs and treat both sons and daughters equally. We organise several workshops and seminars to introduce them to government schemes that offer benefits to families with daughters. 
 We have prevented the killing of 700 baby girls and have found safe and loving homes for more than 50 girls abandoned by their families. It takes around Rs. 20,000 to save the life of a girl and help her parents bring her up the way they would bring up their sons.

In 2011, India’s female literacy rate stood at 55% for the women aged above 15 while the female employment rate was 25% of those of working age. These low percentages are down to economic constraints, gender inequalities and a preference among many Indian families to educate males instead of females.Women typically work informally in households or in agriculture, and remain dependent on their male family members. With no real education or opportunity to work, they never achieve empowerment or become confident enough to make their own decisions. 
 We realised that providing girls with an education and usable skills to make a steady income, was the best way to empower them. We select 75 meritorious girls that belong to disadvantaged families and give them scholarships. Our scholarships provide girls with the chance to be admitted into institutions offering vocational courses, such as nursing and computer skills, and the opportunity to get the Diploma in Front Office Management. 
 On successful completion of the course, girls will be equipped with key skills to be able to earn a living. Most of them find rewarding jobs and some choose to start their own small enterprises. This not only strengthens their position in society, but also supports their families with an additional income. Every year we provide scholarships to 75 girls and with your help we can do the same this year as well.
