Despite being alone, he studies, does all the housework, and looks after his younger siblings," Asha recounts. When his parents tried to take him and his siblings to work at a brick kiln, the boy resisted, saying, "I want to study and I want my young siblings to study as well."Why Education MattersEducation is the key to breaking the cycle of generational poverty. Work for Equality is a registered non-profit organization working since 2010 to empower girls from marginalized communities in India. Founded by Prabha Vilas, the first-generation learner from her community, the organization is driven by the belief that every girl deserves education, health, and the chance to lead her own life.Through girls’ clubs, educational support, and community initiatives, we help girls stay in school, challenge gender biases, and build confidence to make their own choices. Our programs address critical issues such as child marriage, school dropouts, gender discrimination, and lack of access to health and hygiene. We promote menstrual hygiene in schools, access to public transport, environmental conservation, and awareness against violence toward women, ensuring girls grow up in safe, supportive communities.During the COVID-19 pandemic, we supported 6,935 people from marginalized communities by providing food, medicine, and awareness, while also helping children continue their education with study materials and classes. For 100 days during the lockdown, we maintained regular contact to support their mental health and even created online books to ensure continued learning.For vulnerable families, especially in tribal areas, we promote kitchen gardens, providing nutritious and healthy food, while helping adolescents continue their education up to Class 12. Life skills and leadership training prepare them for future livelihoods and meaningful participation in society.Over the past 15 years, Work for Equality has empowered 64,854 girls to stay in school, build confidence, and pursue their dreams. With continued support, we aim to reach thousands more girls, protecting them from child marriage, enabling them to exercise their rights, and giving them the tools to create dignified, empowered lives.

🌸 Girl Child Day – A Promise for the Future 🌸 In the villages of Khed and Phaltan, Girl Child Day was celebrated for the very first time 🤝 with the Gram Panchayats. It wasn’t just an event — it was a moment of recognition, respect, and acceptance ❤️. Girls stood tall 🎤, speaking about their right to education 📚, safety 🛡️, and equality ⚖️. Laughter 🎭, music 🎶, and powerful words filled the halls, leaving parents inspired and elders proud. For the Panchayats, it was a lesson 📝: when communities work with girls, they build a stronger, brighter future 🌈. For the girls, it was proof they are seen, valued, and celebrated 💫. This day became a promise 💖 — that girls are here not just to be part of society, but to lead it forward. 🌟

When I met Anita, she was only 10 years old.Despite living in extreme poverty — with ill parents, an elderly grandmother, and a disabled uncle — she carried a spark that could light up a room. She worked to support her family but never gave up on learning. She attended our community learning sessions whenever she could. Her words still echo in my mind:💬 “I will study and one day build a house on this footpath.” I helped her get admitted to a hostel, hoping her life would change. But a sudden family crisis displaced them. Without my knowledge, her uncle withdrew her from school. At just 15, she was married to a man twice her age. That moment shook me deeply.It made me question — why are girls like Anita denied the right to dream, to study, to live their childhood? Anita’s story mirrors that of many girls — my mother, aunt, sister, and the friends I grew up with — all victims of child marriage. I couldn’t change their past, but I can fight for the present and future.
