The extent of the struggles here was beyond my imagination. These villages had no connectivity to the outside world, and very limited access to healthcare and quality education”, says Bipin Dhane, founder of the school. Bipin, who grew up in the small town of Satara in Maharashtra, faced countless financial hardships. Despite his struggles, Bipin secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and then went on to take up a job in Singapore. Owing to his childhood experiences Bipin was always inclined towards helping the less fortunate, and he believed in the transformative power of education. It was in 2016 that Bipin left his lucrative career abroad and moved to Majuli, to provide the children from this inaccessible river island education they were deprived of.“Whatever little money I had saved, I gave it to my parents. I had no money to start the school. It was then that villagers came together to build bamboo huts. Each family donated bamboo, wood, and whatever little they could. Work for Equality is a registered non-profit organization working since 2010 to empower girls from marginalized communities in India. Founded by Prabha Vilas, the first-generation learner from her community, the organization is driven by the belief that every girl deserves education, health, and the chance to lead her own life.Through girls’ clubs, educational support, and community initiatives, we help girls stay in school, challenge gender biases, and build confidence to make their own choices. Our programs address critical issues such as child marriage, school dropouts, gender discrimination, and lack of access to health and hygiene. We promote menstrual hygiene in schools, access to public transport, environmental conservation, and awareness against violence toward women, ensuring girls grow up in safe, supportive communities.During the COVID-19 pandemic, we supported 6,935 people from marginalized communities by providing food, medicine, and awareness, while also helping children continue their education with study materials and classes. For 100 days during the lockdown, we maintained regular contact to support their mental health and even created online books to ensure continued learning.For vulnerable families, especially in tribal areas, we promote kitchen gardens, providing nutritious and healthy food, while helping adolescents continue their education up to Class 12. Life skills and leadership training prepare them for future livelihoods and meaningful participation in society.Over the past 15 years, Work for Equality has empowered 64,854 girls to stay in school, build confidence, and pursue their dreams. With continued support, we aim to reach thousands more girls, protecting them from child marriage, enabling them to exercise their rights, and giving them the tools to create dignified, empowered lives.
