“The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. It slowly started taking care of mentally challenged women. Sharanalayam has come a long way since that time, with hundreds of children and women being taken care of by the NGO in the last two decades. Many women were rehabilitated by the NGO, thanks to its facilities.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of over 100 women. The organisation also aspires to take care of many more mentally ill women in the coming months and years. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. Yash Charitable Trust (YCT) was founded in 2014 with a vision that persons with developmental disabilities (PWDDs) will live and work in the community of their choice with dignity and self-respect.Since inception, YCT's mission has been to enhance the quality of life of our beneficiaries (PWDDs) through inclusive community-based activities which assist them in becoming more responsible, productive members of society. The trust currently focuses on three mutually exclusive aspects of adult life (supported employment, skilling and training, counselling and therapies) which serve as a platform to assist PWDDs successfully transition into adulthood by providing supported opportunities to earn a livelihood and develop meaningful relationships within the community.We attempt to address the problem of livelihood and quality of life primarily by training and offering supported employment opportunities at two of our flagship programs (Arpan Food Services and Café Arpan). These opportunities are inclusive in nature and create natural friendships and community involvement leading to an enhanced quality of life. Additionally, we also run weekly enrichment activities and community-based initiatives.

Adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities are the most marginalised and most excluded group within the disability sector. Most of these individuals go through special schools and then either sit at home or are relegated to sheltered workshops. Most such workshops are exclusionary in nature and separate from the surrounding community. The reality is that with proper training and support, these adults are able to sustain jobs just like their non-disabled peers; but current opportunities are few and far between. 
 Yash Charitable Trust is working towards providing inclusive livelihood opportunities within the mainstream community. Our supported employment initiatives are grounded in the community and we work within a strength-based framework. When individuals join our team, the first few months are spent with getting to know them, their strengths and weaknesses as well as providing opportunities for them to develop decision-making skills, responsibility and accountability within the natural setting. As a side benefit, our beneficiaries build strong bonds with their peers and support staff creating a win-win situation all around. Another important aspect of our program is that we are educating the surrounding community as to how capable and reliant our beneficiaries are and that they do not need to be in exclusionary settings. 
 Our vision is that persons with developmental and intellectual disabilities live and work in the community of their choice with dignity and self respect/ This is the impact we wish to create for our team members. Giving them a sense of purpose, the opportunities to be social and creative, improving their quality of life and making them active citizens of this country.
