I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. And work rarely ended before nine or ten at night. “The fumes in the stone-polishing factory were such that I would choke and feel suffocated all day long. There was a time when I fell from the first floor and had I not caught onto the railing, I am not sure what would have happened. But no one ever thinks about the fact that behind this universal name given to children working as labourers in hotels and tea stalls, are little kids who have been deprived of not just basic rights but even their own identity,” says Shekhar Mahajan while shedding light on the genesis of the child rights NGO. “I would be hurt and shaken to see people use the word chotu and to change this became my motivation. I wanted to give children an opportunity to live a good life away from abuse and exploitation. Starting out with a strong resolve, Shekhar and his NGO have till date changed the lives of thousands of children and have freed them from a life of abuse as child labourers and bonded labourers.The only thing stopping Shekhar from ensuring that every child gets the upbringing they deserve is a lack of resources and funds. At Yellow Streets, our primary beneficiaries are underprivileged children and women from urban slum clusters across Delhi NCR. These communities often face compounded vulnerabilities due to poverty, limited access to quality education, inadequate healthcare, unsafe living conditions, and restricted livelihood opportunities. Children and women in these areas are particularly marginalized—girls are at higher risk of early school dropouts, child marriage, and gender-based violence, while women often lack avenues for socio-economic mobility or creative expression.  We chose to work with these communities based on years of grassroots engagement and needs assessments, which revealed critical gaps in psychosocial support, education, public health awareness, and access to rights and entitlements. These slum clusters are frequently excluded from mainstream development discourse and lack consistent institutional support.  By focusing on children and young women in these areas, Yellow Streets aims to break the intergenerational cycles of poverty and disempowerment. Our programs are tailored to foster resilience, creativity, leadership, and socio-economic empowerment through arts, sports, life skills education, legal literacy, and livelihood training. Through a rights-based and community-centered approach, we work to ensure that these individuals are not just passive recipients but active participants in shaping their own futures.

Yellow Streets is a not-for-profit organization working at the intersection of social justice, gender equity, and community empowerment. Our primary focus is on enabling children and young women from underserved urban slum clusters through a comprehensive set of psychosocial development interventions. These include community-based programs in arts, sports, music, embroidery, and creative expression—all aimed at fostering confidence, leadership, and socio-emotional well-being.In addition to our psychosocial initiatives, Yellow Streets runs learning centers, offers educational scholarships, and undertakes community mobilization and awareness campaigns on public health, access to legal entitlements, and human rights. These efforts are designed to create enabling environments that support long-term development and systemic inclusion.We are also exploring a hybrid model to ensure sustainability and economic empowerment. Under this model, we work with women artisans and young creators from the communities to produce handcrafted embroidered products and visual artworks developed through our capacity-building workshops. We are building pathways to market these products through multi-channel strategies, including e-commerce platforms and ethical retail collaborations. This initiative not only generates livelihood opportunities but also amplifies the voices and talents of women who are often excluded from mainstream economic systems.Our approach is rooted in participatory methodologies, community ownership, and a rights-based framework that integrates creative expression with access to education, health, and livelihoods.
