"My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. YFS is working towards improving the quality of education for the underprivileged students of society. One of the projects we are working with for this cause is the School Kit Drive. We are trying to raise funds for 1000 school kits which will be distributed to the students from a very low financial background and are at the verge of drop-out from school. Giving a school kit motivates children to continue school and also encourage their further interest in studies.  The School Kit drive program aims at providing underprivileged children from the urbanslums and rural areas across India receive new &amp; quality education aid at the beginningof every year. Through this initiative, we aim to provide the school kits to as many needy students aspossible. A school kit comprises of a bag, notebooks, pencil box, geometry box, waterbottle and other stationery. In 2018, the School Kit Drive was driven by a group of full-time coordinators from YFS. YFS volunteers along with full-time coordinators personally visited the Governmentschools in and around Hyderabad and distributed the school kits. In rural areasYFS Hyderabad also distributed Solar Lamps to the students. In 2018, YFS reachedout to 18,000 students in providing the school kits. YFS Hyderabad has proactivelyworked to reach out to more number of students, especially in Nepal, Chhattisgarh andOrissa. With every Passing Year YFS is reaching out to more and more beneficiaries by involving more corporates and more volunteers.

Most children in government schools are first generation learners &amp; are not encouraged by parents to pursue higher education. There’s a tendency to drop out of school to augment their family income. To address this, Children studying in Class 8 can attempt NMMS Scholarship test &amp; bag Scholarship. YFS engages volunteers to motivate &amp; coach students to crack the test. 
 YFS Goal is to reach out to 40,000 students across India in 2022-23, train them to attempt NMMS Exam through 4000 volunteers across 4000 schools.45 YFS full-time coordinators across the country dedicate 5 months (July through November) to work with Schools, identify the students, recruit, train &amp; coordinate with volunteers for the program roll out &amp; implementation.•YFS full-time Coordinators &amp; Volunteers work in tandem with School faculty to pick students for training. •Curate NMMS related syllabus &amp; distribute syllabus books to schools/ students•Work with students to register for exams &amp; get all documents ready (caste, income, etc.)•Monitor the progress of the program delivery and provide necessary support to volunteers, faculty &amp; students 
 Our goal this year to see at least 40,000 students trained by YFS volunteers across India crack the NMMS exam &amp; bag scholarship. Since 2014, our NMMS coaching program has expanded across India with 5000+ thousand students acing the exam &amp; bagging the prestigious scholarship.
