If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. Despite having two premier Institutions for mental health care – Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP) and Ranchi Institute of Neuro-Psychiatry and Allied Sciences (RINPAS) for nearly a century now, the condition of mental health care in Jharkhand is deplorable. Jharkhand is placed 5th in the country with 11.1% of the population suffering from severe mental illness as against the highest figure of 14.1 in Manipur and the lowest of 5.8 % in Assam. This is as per the first National mental health survey conducted by the MHFW, GOJ. Psychiatrists both at RINPAS and CIP have denied proper drug supply. Though some of the drugs are available for Patients at RINPAS but CIP never procured or provided medicines to the patients. The area falls in the Coal mines of Ramgarh, with presently 144 Target Children. In absence of the basic services even children with mild problems are developing secondary problems. The dearth of support systems along with poor child-rearing skills of parents develop a vicious circle of poverty. The need of the hour is to Provide Critical Conditions Support to Children with poor mental health in Ultra-poor families for their mental consultation, Medicines, Physiotherapy Inputs &amp; CBR Support (if needed). 
 <ul><li>Detailed Screening Of The Children For Early Identified of Cases.</li><li>Parental Consultation Camps for Counselling.</li><li>Expert Medical Consultation, MRI (If Suggested), Provision of Need Based Medicines For the Identified children, Critical Conditions Support ( if Needed)</li><li>Rendering specialized services at the Resource Centre.</li><li>150 CWD provided need based rehabilitation services.</li><li>Identified eligible CWDs will have Suitable Aids and Appliances.</li><li>Linkages for corrective surgery and /Or Allied services for treatment.</li><li>Village level sensitization drives.</li><li> Awareness Promotion and Community Education low cost locally available edibles with its nutrient values for Prevention against the cases of mental illness.</li></ul> 
 <ul><li>Children With Poor Mental Health From Ultra Poor Families have access to Proper Medical Consultation, Diagnosis, Expert Advice, Physiotherapy Inputs and Hand Holding Support for the Process of Socialization.</li><li>Children with special needs will have access to Critical Conditions Support to deal with emergency health needs.</li><li>The identified CWD of the target villages will enhance their skill for independent living with ensuring full participation.</li><li>CWD will have need-based Aid and Appliances and Disability Certificate.</li><li>20-60% Improvement in skill depending upon the severity level will be observed on the BASIC-MR scale</li><li>People are more aware of common mental disorders such as depression and anxiety, and are more willing to talk to health professionals and seek treatment.</li><li>Non availability of the information about low cost locally available edibles with its nutrient values for Prevention, Dearth of Early identification and intervention services and Counselling for the parents and Limited Skills to deal with the childhood Mental Health issues.</li></ul>

Critical Conditions Support For Children With Poor Mental Health In Coal Mining Areas Of Ramgarh, Jharkhand

The Primitive Tribal Communities, Birhores are forced to live a life of hunger, malnutrition, deprivation and misery as they are pushed onto the margins of the society. With their isolation from forest the women and children are left with no options other than begging and living under starvation conditions. Begging has made the children especially girls and women vulnerable to physical and sexual abuse leading to child marriages, high maternity mortality and infant mortality. With their displacement from forest, and Adverse Affect of COVID, the families are at the risk of their survival. Govt. has given them Shelter but the situation inside the houses is pathetic. Some of them have left their houses and live in the leaf made hutments or KUMBHAS. During rains and winter their situation becomes hapless. Children go to ICDS centers and primary schools for meals being provided there. Children find it difficult to learn at Primary schools as they have language barriers. There is no provision for special coaching for these children hence the retention at school is negligible. Children are involved in begging and grazing activities. Whatever is their income is spent on rice and drinking alcohol compelling them to live on the verge of extinction. 
 1.   Provision of food support to Birhore Families - Addressing hunger and malnutrition with special focus on children and expecting mothers and the marginalized Birhore families in General.2.   Provision of Health and Hygiene Care - for the ailing children, expecting mothers and elderly.3.   Livelihood Support For Non Farm Activities - Initiation of Small livelihood initiatives like mat making, rope making, net making, bee keeping and Goatry to facilitate cash income to ward off starvation conditions.4.   Livelihood Support For Farm Activities- Initiation of agricultural practices to reduce dependency on begging.5.   Remedial Education For Children – Coaching to Birhore Children for their retention is schools and enrolment of school dropouts to quality education programs. It would address the learning deficit, nutrition and emotional health of children during COVID.
