The extent of the struggles here was beyond my imagination. These villages had no connectivity to the outside world, and very limited access to healthcare and quality education”, says Bipin Dhane, founder of the school. Bipin, who grew up in the small town of Satara in Maharashtra, faced countless financial hardships. Despite his struggles, Bipin secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and then went on to take up a job in Singapore. Owing to his childhood experiences Bipin was always inclined towards helping the less fortunate, and he believed in the transformative power of education. It was in 2016 that Bipin left his lucrative career abroad and moved to Majuli, to provide the children from this inaccessible river island education they were deprived of.“Whatever little money I had saved, I gave it to my parents. I had no money to start the school. It was then that villagers came together to build bamboo huts. Each family donated bamboo, wood, and whatever little they could. At Zameer Foundation (ZF), through non-formal education and holistic development, we aim to empower our students to dream big.  Using Basic English as the medium of instruction, Zameer Foundation enhances students' analytical and critical thinking skills through debates, presentations, and discussions, while also focusing on fostering strong personal values. Our Reading Program, held three times a week, enhances fluency, expression, and comprehension. The weekly professional development sessions focus on goal-setting and acquiring life skills. We plan to collaborate with government colleges in the future to bridge the gap between academic education and employment skills, aiming to enhance practical skills, leadership, and career readiness. On Sunday mornings, students participate in Ultimate Frisbee, a gender-inclusive sport.

Education

At Zameer Foundation (ZF), through non-formal education and holistic development, we aim to empower our children to dream big. ZF covers two villages having students from ages 7 - 21years in Alipur Tanda and Kyspanalli Tanda, in the Yadgir district of Karnataka. Yadgir District has the lowest education rate (52%) in India, as well as the highest number of illiterate women in Karnataka.   Through education, mentoring, and community engagement, we strive to break the cycle of generational illiteracy.   The students learn Basic English, which is our medium of communication. In addition, they strengthen their analytical, critical thinking skills through debates, presentations, and discussions. At ZF we also lay emphasis on honing them as individuals with a strong set of values.  To ensure the basics are strong, Zameer Foundation runs a Reading Program three times a week to build fluency, expression and comprehension. A volunteer is paired with a ZF student and they meet virtually on predefined days.  Our programs include Weekly Digest Sessions where the students read and present a piece of news once a week.The effort is to push boundaries of knowledge, and thereby students’ own potential.  The weekly professional development program aims at setting goals and learning life skills including employability skills.   In the future we plan to start a college program with Government Colleges with an aim to bridge the gap between academic education and life skills required for employment. We focus on developing practical skills, leadership qualities, and career readiness among college students.  This represents our commitment to supporting young adults in their transition from education to employment.   On Sunday mornings, our students practice Ultimate Frisbee, a gender inclusive sport. Recently, they participated in an U24 tournament in Bangalore on 4th August 2024.

Through awareness and exposure to 21st-century skills, we strongly emphasize the values of courage, empathy, and integrity offering choice, opportunity, and agency to each student.ZF covers two villages, Alipur and Kysapnalli, in Yadgir. Patriarchy limits girls' education, often leading to early marriages and domestic violence. This perpetuates poverty and a lack of agency, leaving women without dreams or aspirations.Boys in these villages often leave school early to fulfill financial obligations, and even those who graduate lack essential skills. At Zameer Foundation, we are committed to confronting these challenges head-on through education, mentoring, and community engagement. Our goal is to end generational illiteracy and empower students to pursue their dreams with practical skills and resilience.
