“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. Relief and impactIn response to the devastating cloudburst and flash floods in Uttarkashi on August 5, 2025, ActionAid conducted rapid assessments in the most affected villages. The NGO targeted 200 of the most marginalised and vulnerable families in villages like Dharali, Harsil, Bagori, and Dunda. Support our fight against second wave of COVID-19 in India

Migrant labourers are the backbone of India’s informal sector and micro, small and medium enterprises. The Indian Census 2011, puts the total number of internal migrants in the country at 139 million, majority of which are men. The out migration of women for employment often gets masked in categories like marriage and family data. A rough estimate is that women migrant workers account to 20-30%. The states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are the biggest source of rural migration. The prominent destination points are metro cities like Delhi, and Maharashtra.The outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) has not only created a full-blown health emergency but has also severely impacted the lives and livelihoods of millions of internal migrant workers. The economic crisis for these huge number of migrant workers, is a manifestation of the social and ecological crisis which pushes rural communities to move towards the cities in search of dignified lives and livelihoods for themselves. The prolonged lockdown in India to contain the spread of the pandemic sparked a mass exodus of internal migrant workers returning to their homes. Central and state governments have announced several relief measures to the people affected however implementing these on the ground remain a challenge for various reasons. The returning home migrants after the lockdown, brings them back to deal with the environmental stressors they left behind - degradation of land; depleting water bodies, inconsistency in yield, over exploitation of natural resources etc., are just some small examples. 
 Based on our direct interactions with the communities in Bihar and taking cognisance of the ground realities our key actions would be to revive/ rebuild livelihoods with a focus on food and income security. The proposed activities will include:1.    Formation of women farmer's co-operativesIt is proposed to strengthen the formation of women’s co- operatives through regular meetings and impart trainings on the structural causes for the discrimination of women, understanding of sub-altern feminism and why women need to be acknowledged as farmers despite the fact that over two-thirds of agriculture is actually done by them. Exclusive women farmer producer groups would be facilitated in the process and this would also involve trainings on sustainable farming, gender sensitisation, development of producer group with seed capital for agriculture and other related activities, development of and agriculture tool bank for women to have small, sustainable practices. Awareness, IEC materials on women, gender and agriculture will be developed. This intervention will not just strengthens livelihoods, but it also bring about a structural transformation in the current power relations based on gender, caste and class.                                                                                                            2.    Revival of Traditional water harvesting structures                 The women farmers’ co-operatives would work towards rekindling of the traditional water harvesting structures through eco-friendly ways and traditional knowledge of water conservation, as the area is drought prone. For this, it is proposed to rekindle the traditional structure ‘aharpyne’, deepening and de-silting of ponds, construction of new ponds and new wells as well. Activities are also proposed towards farm bunding since the women farmers would not just be farming on their land but also engage in collective farming on common lands.                                                                                                                                                                                                                     3.    Promoting zero budget natural farming (ZBNF)                       Given the pandemic and the loss of crops, it is proposed to encourage natural farming involving very low cost and environment friendly techniques/bio-fertilisers. For this, there would be efforts towards trainings on ZBNF, development of vermicompost pits at the collective level and also natural method of cold storage (ZECC). Together, this, along with the eco-friendly tools and techniques would initiate and promote climate friendly, low cost and sustainable form of agriculture.                                                                                                       4.    Agriculture Extension                                                                This intervention would be the common thread between the production and marketing processes. In what is envisaged as the link between the backward and forward linkages of agriculture, it is training for primary processing of the grains and a basic understanding of how value addition leads to profits. Further, efforts would be made towards the revival of women’s roles as traditional conservers of seeds through promotion of seed replacement, selection of best seeds and seed banks at collective level which can be used both as grains in times of need for the most vulnerable families as well as seeds for the next crop.                                                                                                             5.    Forward Linkages on Exclusive Women led Markets             The forward linkages would entail development of exclusive women led ‘Aadhat’ to ensure that they not just producers but can also very well market their produce and also create markets for other small farmers from marginalised communities (who have been severely impacted because of the pandemic). This would involve training on markets (adhat as they are called locally) and training on collectivisation and marketing of produce after value addition. Additionally, meetings and trainings are also proposed with government and other stakeholders to showcase women’s roles amidst the pandemic not just in livelihood reconstruction but as models of sustainable development. Further, some resources for specific women’s Adhats are also earmarked and tools for measurement and other similar implements. Through this, it is also proposed to host a Kisan Mela to bring forth and showcase women led agriculture and celebrate their role as farmers and exemplary in terms of challenging discriminatory and gendered mainstream norms.                                                                                                                        6.    Krushi Mitra:                                                                             For this model of sustainable development, it is proposed to support a woman Krushi Mitra, working part time, in every village. Some resources need to be earmarked for her travel and support. She would be the point person in every village to ensure the proper implementation of the entire series of activities and also be the resource person for others who would wish to undertake similar intervention. 
 The following impact is envisaged:<ul><li>30 women’s collectives will be formed in two blocks (Giriyak and Pawapuri) of Nalanda district in Bihar.</li><li>Total 500 women farmers trained and practising collective sustainable farming.</li><li>Total 2500 individuals will directly benefit as a result of the proposed interventions of having sustained livelihood and food security</li><li>Indirect Beneficiaries: 15000 across 30 villages assuming there are 150 families in each village</li></ul>

Sustain Livelihood and Food Security Among Migrant Workers and Small/Marginalised Farmers in Bihar

Incessant rainfalls in various parts of the country have caused devastating floods across the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Kerala, Odisha and West Bengal.Of the six flood-affected states, Maharashtra, Karnataka are the worst-hit and have been put in ‘red alert’ zones by the central government’s National Emergency Response Centre. The other four have been put in ‘orange alert’ zone.In Karnataka, 40 people have been killed and more than 3 lakh people are staying in 1,168 relief camps. Over 2,000 villages have been affected and 4.2 lakh hectares of agriculture and crop loss have been reported.In Maharashtra, nearly 5 lakh people have been evacuated by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) as per the latest report. A total of 22 districts in Maharashtra have been severely affected. Many incidents of structural collapse, submergence of state and national highways was reported across affected districts. Nine people (including a woman and three children) died in Sangli district as a boat carrying about 30 capsized during rescue operations. Infrastructure has taken a hit, many ICDS centres, schools and the water supply have been affected.In Kerala, the death toll has risen to 88 and over 2.5 lakhs have been affected by the floods and are now staying in 1,639 relief camps. The authorities have been put on high alert. Kannur, Kasaragod and Wayanad districts have been most affected. Kerala was hit by devastating floods last year too, and nearly 500 people lost their lives. 
 ActionAid with its local allies is reaching out to the flood-affected families in the worst-hit districts in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala. In Maharashtra, the worst affected areas include are Sangli and Sangola. In Karnataka, the worst-hit districts are Belagavi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Yadagiri, Raichur, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Haveri and Shivamogga. In Kerala, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram and Idukki are worst hit. Our volunteers are collecting relief materials to be distributed in villages that are fully submerged. We are also conducting needs assessment in many districts across these states.ActionAid plans to provide immediate relief in the affected families in the form of food, safe drinking water, clothing, hygiene kits, temporary shelters, mosquito nets, fodder and sheds for livestock. Our relief efforts are aimed at providing the immediate needs of the affected population while planning for restoration and rehabilitation of homes, infrastructure and livelihoods. 
 Our efforts do not stop at relief and rehabilitation of affected communities. ActionAid interventions during emergency responses are aimed at building the capacity of affected communities to become more disaster resilient and are able to take countermeasures to mitigate risks and loss of lives. We work closely with state and government authorities to facilitate disaster response training and to help spread awareness among communities on what steps to take during emergencies.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE IN MAHARASHTRA, KARNATAKA AND KERALA

WE ARE RESPONDING.DONATE NOW!Donate to North-East Flood Relief Response from ActionAid Association, India.Floods and landslides in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam have claimed the lives of 11 people while at least eight persons have been missing since May 14, 2022. <img src="https://cfstatic.give.do/1fd3828b-bc76-4f1e-9b3c-be7dba83788d.jpg" />As per officials in Arunachal Pradesh, at least five persons have lost their lives and several others are injured following landslides in two areas of the state’s capital, Itanagar, since the night of May15. Rains and soggy conditions delayed the rescue operations, but the personnel of National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force and other agencies managed to save six persons, including two women, from the debris at the two locations. <img src="https://cfstatic.give.do/86fbe623-c7f8-45b6-8291-bff26802d447.PNG" style="display:block;margin:auto" />In Assam, floodwaters have killed two people in Cachar district while another person died in a landslip in Lakhimpur district. At least three people died in a landslip in Dima Hasao district, taking the death toll to six. An equal number of people are reported missing in flood-hit Cachar district. Hill districts of Tamenglong and Noney at Manipur suffered the worst as most of the landslides and flash floods caused widespread damages to the road communication in these districts.An update provided by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on the morning of May 17 said that the state received an average rainfall of 592.6 mm from March 1 to May 16. Almost incessant heavy rainfall over the last 72 hours has led to flooding in 24 districts of the state, mostly in central and western parts. So far, 2,02,385 people have been affected across 811 villages and some urban centres with 1,227 houses fully and 5,262 houses partially damaged. 
 Engaged with the most marginalised communities in India since 1972, ActionAid Association works in 24 states and two union territories with several partners and allied organisations. During our 50 years of service and solidarity with vulnerable communities, we have responded to several emergencies across the country, including floods, cyclones, earthquakes and more recently, the recent COVID-19 pandemic, with an aim to reach the unreached. In Assam and Manipur, together with our allies, we are working with the most disadvantaged communities. Dima Hasao, the second largest district of Assam as well as Temenglong district of Manipur are worst affected by floods and landslides. In the present situation, our intervention would immediately reach out to those worst-affected in Dima Hasao, Temenglong and its adjoining areas to save people from starvation and hunger.
