"My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. In absence of proper support mechanisms in the Old Age, today, older people in slum areas are forced to live in the most disadvantaged circumstances. </li><li>Older People in India are suffering a lot due to the long-lasting impact of the pandemic situation. It has affected almost every senior citizen and rattled their daily lifestyle. It has not affected the health condition of older persons but also marred their social life and affected their psychosocial and financial well-being as well. </li><li>In slum areas and resettlement colonies, the majority of older persons live in poor families, where earning members can't even feed their families properly with their limited income. In these families, basic health care, nutrition, and proper food needs of older persons remained unaddressed. Due to poor financial status, older persons live a life devoid of basic quality of life.Thousands of older persons in Delhi-NCR live in slums, where even common health-related diseases turn into major health hazards simply due to the non-availability of proper and nutritious food, ignoring initial symptoms of diseases, and being careless toward healthcare-related needs of older persons.In slum areas and resettlement colonies, the majority of older persons live in BPL (below poverty line) families, where earning members limited income to even feed their families properly. In these families, the basic healthcare needs of older persons remained unaddressed.
