For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. ATREE has been working closely with the rural communities in the Chamarajanagar district for the past 25 years- to help improve livelihoods, contribute to sustainable development while conserving the forest environment.  This new wave of COVID has ravaged these underserved rural communities. On May 3rd alone, 24 people died in 24 hours. Many of them died due to oxygen shortages in government hospitals in Chamarajnagar- and many of these deaths could have been prevented. 
 As part of our continuing engagement and outreach to these communities, we have partnered with the volunteer team of public health professionals working on the ground in Chamarajanagar District to work with district health administration and public health department to set up better critical hospital care facilities in the region.   They have already: <ul><li>Sourced and deployed c. 30 oxygen concentrators, and secured pledges for 30 more</li><li>helped the District establish patient flow systems at the overburdened district/taluk hospitals, </li><li>Helped set up patient triage at various levels in district hospitals</li><li>Established 9 Rural Covid Care Centres (CCCs) of 50 beds each (7 up and running)</li></ul> But many patients still need life-saving medical equipment and in-patient accessories for dignified care at government hospitals We will coordinate with other local NGOs and the district administration to buy the specific items that are needed by the community when the money comes in. This is because the situation is dynamic and changing from week to week. At present this is the request:<ul><li>3 doctor recommended self-cleaning toilets @$5,400 USD each ($16,300 USD total)</li><li>PPE, medicines, masks, patient consumables, communications equipment, transportation costs, ambulance retrofits ($16,400 USD total)</li><li>Oxygen support (mobile cylinders/ concentrators depending on what’s needed at the time the money comes in) ($8,200 USD Total)</li></ul> Total funds required: $41,100 USD 
 Most immediately, these funds will help obtain and immediately deploy life-saving equipment and medicines first, at district and taluk hospitals, where pressure on the health infrastructure currently far outstrips capacity. Further, these funds will help establish and equip 9 Rural Covid Care Centres such that reasonable care is available closer to home for people living in remote villages of this district. Doing this will also relieve pressure on the Taluk and District hospitals such that their facilities remain available to the most serious and needy patients.

Bringing life saving medical equipment to underserved rural communities in the Chamarajanagar district, Karnataka

Forest-dependent indigenous tribes across India are marginalized communities, struggling to make a living. One such community, The Soliga community, lives in the Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple Tiger Reserve (BRT) and Malai Mahadeshwara wildlife sanctuary (MM Hills). They have an average household earning is $1 a day. These communities depend on Non-timber Forest Products (NTFPs) for their livelihoods. ATREE has worked with the Soliga community for over 2 decades. During this time, ATREE noticed that the Soliga's ability to forage NTFPs significantly decreased, due to the spread of an invasive weed, Lantana camera. Lantana, one of the world's most invasive weeds, occupies more than 47% of the forest’s floor. It hampers the growth and multiplication of native forest biodiversity. Several organizations attempted one-time removal of Lantana. Yet, they found that lantana came back, and continued to hamper the Soliga's ability to generate income. 
 To help increase income, ATREE tested using lantana as a livelihood resource. ATREE piloted the "Weeds-to-Wealth" program- using lantana to make furniture. home accessories, and crafts. ATREE’s innovation of converting “weeds-to-wealth” creates a win- win scenario. It improves tribal livelihoods, while promoting forest biodiversity and conservation. The COVID-19 pandemic has made this initiative even more critical. Marginalized communities need alternative sources of income, as urban migration for livelihood purposes has proved difficult. 
 The Weeds-to-Wealth program is working (see impact below). The COVID-19 Pandemic has made us accelerate our plans to scale the program. We are looking to generate 36 lakh for the artisans. 1) 6 lakh of working capital take new orders 2) 15 lakh to rent a warehouse for 12 months in Bangalore to store their products 3) 15 lakh to upgrading tools and infrastructure to scale their work .Impact to date:ATREE has witnessed a 42% increase in the Soliga master craftsmen’s/women’s household income. As many as 350 Soliga individuals have been trained in this craft, with 20 master craftsmen/women. Many craftsmen also go to neighboring villages to conduct trainings and have trained another 400 craftsmen. Approximately 113 households are now involved in this craft and an average income has risen from $30-$40/month to $100/month.Today, we have set up 3 Lantana Craft Centres and continue training the local Soliga communities in this craft. The product line is continuously evolving. Lantana craftsmen are even making bespoke pieces of art out of lantana- life-size elephants – earning 1500 USD/piece. ATREE has also helped the Soligas exhibit their handiwork at different podiums in and around Karnataka and facilitated collaborations with other NGOs for increased opportunities. Now the tribal artisans run their business through Lantana Craft Centres based microenterprise. ATREE’s new centre, Centre for Social and Environmental Innovation (CSEI) is now working with Social Venture Partners to develop a scalable business model around the sale of lantana furniture by local artisans.
