For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. AWO is running an old-age home at Military Colony, Avilala Panchayat, Tirupati Rural Mandal, Ramachandrapuram Mandal and Chandragiri Mandals of Chittoor District. Presently, we are catering to around 40 senior citizens living in the old age home.. The inhabitants of the house are people from nearby villages, railway stations, bus stand and from police referral cases. We are taking care of the physiological needs providing food, shelter, clothing, medicines,recreational facilities, as well as rehabilitation services at the centre. We also have a part time doctor to who attends to the people in need of medical supervision. We also take care of their emotional needs, the need to be part of the community and make a point to celebrate festivals like Independence Day, Children's Day, Disability Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, anniversaries, Senior Citizen’s Day, etc in the old age home. We also provide cremation services.

A large number of poor people live on the streets, and do not have access to the basic necessities of life. They are forgotten by the mainstream society, especially the elderly, who not only have to bear the physical ailments which age brings, but also the psychological setback of having no one who cares for the in the last years of their lives. 
 We are running a shelter home for the old and destitute since 5 years at The Military Colony, Avilala Village, Tirupati Rural mandal. We provide free food, shelter, medical services and recreational facilities to the aged and the poor found on streets of Tirupati and surrounding areas. Some of them are people recommended by the police department, others dropped off there by their children. The organisation is planning in different ways to get grants to sustain the shelter home and keep the services running. There are numerous administrative costs involved in order to maintain the quality of the facilities available as well as to keep upgrading our capacity to reach out to larger number of underprivileged people. We are trying to link the Government of India grant-in-aid programme to sustain this old age home, but so far, there has been no allotments for Chittoor District to run this type of programme. The Assistant Disabled Welfare Office, Chitoor District has also recommended the Old Age home, but it was not successful. So far, we are not getting any financial assistance from the government or any private agency to run this home. We rely on donations and contributions from members. Hence, we require funds to work more effectively. 
 Presently, there are only 40 members leading a safe and secure life here in contrast to the brutal experience they have had while living off the streets. We see them age gracefully and derive our happiness from alleviating pain and suffering from their lives The aim is to reach out to other such people who might be in a desperate need of support since hunger and homelessness are major problems in this country.
