Support a child's education

Food is a huge requirement amongst children from underprivileged communities. While the government does sponsor midday meals in their schools on weekdays, this isn’t sustained through the weekend. This results in lack of energy and enthusiasm in growing children which adversely affects their ability to develop holistically by engaging in extracurricular activities. Even though their mothers are aware of the potential impact, they do not have the bandwidth and sometimes the resources to ensure that the children have a sumptuous meal. 
 For the past 16 years, ACT has consistently ensured that all the children have an unlimited sumptuous meal every Sunday. On the weekdays, we provide a healthy snack and a wholesome 14 cereal and pulse porridge after the children return from school. We believe that only when a child has had a satisfying meal can he/she put in maximum concentration and effort in other spheres of life. We source the food from vendors in the community itself thereby ensuring a large sense involvement. 
 The Sunday Special Meal ensures that the children look forward to coming to the Trust for education support and extracurricular activities and have the energy to actively participate and make the most of them. Our aim is to make sure that every child gets the required nutrients and vitamins allowing them to attend all classes and sessions without feeling drained. ACT takes up the responsibility of providing such children with the necessary assistance in their education, and also encourages them to polish their skills and talent.Here is an exemplary story about how ACT was able to help a child with his education:Mani has completed his Diploma in Hotel Management at St Joseph’s Community College and is now an on-job trainee, as an assistant to the chef at Taj Vivanta, M G Road, Bangalore. Mani joined Ashwini Charitable Trust(http://www.ashwinitrust.org/) in 2010, and after a few weeks with us, it became apparent that he was struggling with mainstream education. The volunteers at ACT then advised and encouraged him to join National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) to complete his class 10. After joining NIOS, he began to overcome his learning difficulties and excelled in his chosen domain. ACT encouraged Mani to polish his skills and talents, which lead to him becoming a good painter, photographer and handicrafts artisan. Mani underwent training in Karate and has acquired a Black Belt. Today, out of his own interest, he also practises cricket as an all-rounder with Karnataka Institute of Cricket, a renowned training center, who’s alumni have gone on to represent India. 
 ACT is participating in the TCS World 10K Run, with the objective of raising Rs. 50,000, which will help us educate and support 1 child for an entire year.
