I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. ACCESS started in 1992, to cater to the needs of neglected and working children in the stone quarries of Bangalore semi-urban areas. Since then hundreds of children have been rescued, rehabilitated, educated, developed and nurtured to be responsible human beings. Marginalised children from quarry and other poor communities were provided sponsorship and assistance towards education, health care, nutrition and development. Through regular curriculum-based programs, children were made aware of their rights and privileges, given opportunities to exhibit talents and engaged in leadership development.ACCESS also extends support, awareness and benefits to the marginalised families through the Family Welfare Program.Tailoring program helps young women learn the skill of tailoring which can help them gain financial stability. Thewomen's groups (Mahila Sanghas) are learning to save their earnings systematically and also access loan schemes to improve their petty business and family needs.Kindergarten school provided infants with a great opportunity to have a good learning foundation. Deserving girl children are provided with foster care facilities.ACCESS reaches out to around 800 marginalised children in four poor locations in the city of Bangalore. However, with fewer resources at our disposal, we are unable to meet the growing number of requests for help.
