"My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. After being thrown out of their often abandoned by their own children and are forced to beg for food and shelter. “Through Project Jeevan, Maitri houses aging widow mothers in two ashrams in Vrindavan and Radhakund (Mathura), providing them with wellness and well-being. The programme also reaches out to widow mothers beyond the ashrams with fruit, milk and healthcare services,” explains Winnie Singh, co-founder and executive director, Maitri India.Save homeless elderly widows from begging on the streetsMost widows who make their way to Vrindavan are abandoned by their families, often after years of abuse. They come here hoping they will spend the rest of their days in prayer and devotion. But most live in impoverished conditions on the streets and in dingy rooms. “They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. Cheshire Disability Trust (CDT) started in 2011 and is a member of the Leonard Cheshire Disability (LCD) Global Alliance, a worldwide organization with affiliations in 54 countries. LCD has been operating in India for almost 70 years and includes about 20 residential programs for Persons With Disabilities (PWD’s) operating through Cheshire Homes India.CDT started its core project “Livelihood Resource Centre” (LRC) in the year 2011, with a vision of creating a society in which disabled persons can enjoy their rights and have the opportunity to fulfill their potential. Our mission is to enable people to improve their quality of life and to campaign for the removal of the barriers which hinder them. We do this by providing livelihood opportunities to PWD’s primarily in Karnataka but also support livelihood programs in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Coimbatore, and other locations.Our focus is to provide employability training and placement and ensure PWDs from economically backward classes get equal opportunities. We train PWDs in the age group of 19-35 with relevant and needed skills and provide them with suitable employment opportunities in various sectors. This helps them to lead a dignified life.CDT has also started self-defense training for disabled women which is the first of its kind in South India. The rates of sexual victimization of women with disabilities are three times higher than for other women. Children with different disabilities face many challenges. It affects their learning, communication &amp; social interaction. Such children require special education interventions to develop social and communication skills properly. However, due to a lack of awareness and financial constraints, these children never get the necessary early intervention. Very often, the parents go from pillar to post and cannot find an appropriate service that is affordable and closer to their homes. After several attempts, they keep the children at home. Hence the opportunity to provide timely therapy enabling their children to lead a good quality of life is lost. 
 This project aims to better the lives of 100 children with disabilities in the Tumkur district and thereafter extend its services to Bangalore city too. As an early intervention programme, we will provide speech therapy, language building and numerical ability to 100 children aged 3-11 years. We train parents in supporting the children in their life skills and learning techniques. These children will be ready to enter mainstream schools with our therapy and special learning interventions. 
 This project would have the following outcomes and impact.1.	The primary beneficiaries would be children with disabilities without access to early intervention services. 2.	Children with disabilities would have improved in speech, functional capacity, language and numerical ability.  3.	Opportunity for learning, development and inclusion into education and mainstream schools4. Parents would have developed a skill in teaching their children, which gives immense satisfaction and will be an added skill for them to earn a living.5. Parents would live without stigma, enjoy parenthood, treasure their children and bring up responsible and earning members into our society.

Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India. According to the National Crime Records Bureau 2013 annual report, 24,923 rape cases were reported across India in 2012.<ul><li>According to the National Crime Record Bureau, India, there is one act of sexual harassment every 5 minutes, one rape every 34 min, one act of torture every 12 minutes</li><li>The rates of sexual victimization of women with disability range from 4 to 10 times higher than for other women.</li></ul> 
 <ul><li>Educate, empower and inspire 100 girls and women through self-defense training and developing capabilities for their overall well-being.</li><li>To ensure personal safety by teaching self-defense techniques to them</li><li>Teaching Self-Defence Techniques and counseling</li></ul> 
 The young women will be made to:<ul><li>Unlock their emotions and shed their fears</li><li>Defend themselves from common attack pattern</li><li> Practice tactical breathing</li><li>Learn yelling techniques to disarm the perpetrator</li><li>Maintain a defensive body posture</li><li>Break the silence and heal from bitter experiences…..</li></ul>Outcome: Ensure quality delivery of training, which will have a positive bearing on the women engaged in this program.
