For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. This programme was initiated in the early nineties as many visitors from abroad after field visits to education programmes, expressed their desire to support children from destitute families to complete their schooling, in their individual capacity. The education scenario in the nineties comprised of vast numbers of children who never went to school, and of those who went, many dropped out to join the army of child laborers and street children. The parents were often illiterate and were unable to provide any support to help their children to remain in school.Over the years, due to intensive efforts of the government and NGOs, enrolment in schools improved, with dropout rates improving slowly over the decades. CINI’s intervention in working with street children, child laborers, and platform children over the years in the city of Kolkata, threw light upon the need to set up “schools” in the slum areas. These should be easily accessible, running at a convenient time, staffed by local volunteers, in spaces provided by the local community. Objectives are:•	To ensure enrolment of all children and to support them to remain in school•	Sensitizing the school teachers and build up strong school-community linkage 
 The strategy adopted is to provide after-school support to children to compensate for the poor quality of education provided in government schools. Customarily this is provided by parents both rich and poor through “private tuitions”. Poor motivated parents were unable to provide these inputs.Each learning center is located in the slums, space provided by local youth clubs, and community spaces owned by religious or political groups. Each center is staffed by one volunteer, known as “Shishumita” (SM) in charge of up to a maximum of 30 children. Each SM is usually a graduate living in the locality, who works for about 2 to 3 hours and are trained by CINI.The learning centers provide the requisite back up support (accelerated as well as following school curriculum for grade wise learning improvement) to the children vulnerable to drop out from schools. All round development of children is the motto; children are provided with academic as well as counseling support, creativity inputs, and different pieces of training on self-development. Although the support is for an individual child, a cluster of children from the same background get support through the Learning Centres. 
 When the programme was initiated, the objective was to ensure the enrolment of all children and to support them to remain in school. Over the decades, the focus changed from supporting the children in all possible ways to remain in school, to continue their education up to high school, as school enrolment became universal. The project supports a child for at least 2 years through education support at learning centres and tracking. Although the support is for an individual child, the amount is used in providing education to a group of children from the same background through learning centres. The project creates an impact on the children, their families and communities.Direct impacts on children are their enrollment and retention in formal schools with quality learning outcomes, behavioral modification. The support also protects the child from the evils of early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and child labor.Parents/ families are sensitized and counseled on effective parenting and their role in ensuring education and safety for their children through regular visits, meetings, and sessions.The communities are also sensitized on the rights of the children and the number of out of school children is reducing creating a positive and sustainable impact.

Educate A Child

The Adopt a Mother and Save her Child project concentrates on nine months of pregnancy and the first two years of a child’s life, during which time, proper nutrition is particularly critical. CINI believes that the most effective way to give a child, born into a poor family, the best possible start in life, is through its mother; nobody is going to take better care of her unborn child or her infant, but she needs to be given the right support. Your donation can help provide that support in the form of nutritional advice, ante and post-natal care, and improved access to government facilities like hospitals for institutional deliveries and child vaccination programmes. These are all crucial factors in ensuring a safe pregnancy and delivery for the mother and a healthy start in life for her child. 
 You will be linked to a mother and her baby in a rural or urban area and will be able to follow their progress through a series of four reports until the child is 2 years old: first, some background information about the mother; then a report after the birth of her baby together with a photograph; the third update would be the photograph of the child at one year of age; and finally, a report at the end of the programme. After this, you will be linked to a new mother or you can continue on to the Educate a Child programme.For just 15,000 rupees to cover a 33 month period, you can be linked to a mother and her child and see the difference your donation makes, not only to their lives but to the lives of others in their community. 
 In fact, you will be doing much more than supporting an individual mother and child. The way CINI uses the money raised by the Adopt a Mother initiative is to create a support network within a community. CINI reaches out to women through a wide range of educational programmes and healthcare initiatives. It sends CINI trained health workers to make door to door health visits and give talks in their districts. This means that in addition to monitoring the mother and child you support, a health worker will also be able to visit a number of other pregnant women and newborn children at the same time. Often, a whole village will come to listen to the health worker’s advice. This innovative approach allows you to connect with an individual mother and child while touching the lives of many others.

Adopt A Mother and Save Her Child

COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on the lives of millions of migrant and marginal/wage-earning families during the lockdown period, who no longer have any source of income to provide for basic necessities. To add to their misery, cyclone Amphan in the coastal region of Sunderbans, in Bengal on 20th May 2020 has destroyed their homes, leaving their families unprotected from the elements during the present monsoon season. Apart from the scarcity of food and shelter during the crisis, we have seen children becoming malnourished, sent out to work as child labourers and girls forced to early marriage or getting trafficked. Mental health and well-being of children are getting compromised as schools and other safe spaces are closed and being cramped in their overcrowded rooms with increasing incidences of physical and sexual abuse and domestic violence. If we don’t help these children and their families now, we will have a generation of children compromised due to COVID 19, who would carry the scars lifelong. 
 With the lifting of lockdown norms, while the grassroots economy has started rolling again, and the institutions are slowly gaining pace, CINI in the meanwhile are training women and youths in villages and slums to motivate and keep a vigil on the families so that care and support to the pregnant and/or lactating women, adolescents and children, do not get hindered. Since early April CINI has been distributing food to over 45,000 families to prevent them from sliding into malnutrition and motivate them to wear masks, maintain social distancing and wash hands frequently as the schools are closed we are ensuring that children are assisted with on/offline teaching or taught by the trained youths to make them school ready when they re-open.We feel, keeping them engaged in education is the best way to prevent them from becoming child labourers, or prevent them from early marriage and being trafficked. Women members of local Self Help Groups take the lead in these activities supported by local government to develop Child-Friendly Communities (CFC) in the villages and slums.  Our front line workers collaborate and complement the services of government workers such as Anganwadi and Asha workers, thereby adding value to them. 
 For a donation of Rs. 8400 per year per family or Rs. 700 per month per family,  YOU CAN HELP them to stay secured in Education, Protection, Health and Nutrition issues. This will ensure that children in vulnerable families are taught by local youth volunteers to be school ready when they re-open, they do not drop out of school, to end up as child labourers, married off early or trafficked. On average there are about 500 to 600 families in each CFC unit in a village or up to 5,000 or more families in each slum area. You may team up with your colleagues and friends to cover more families in the village or slum. Your support will also ensure that children grow up without being hungry and malnourished, free from disease, retained in school and families trained to provide the protective environment they deserve, just like you provide for your own children.

Help the mother, help the child to win the fight against COVID 19 pandemic

Thousands are dying now and in the next few weeks we will see more of our loved ones go, but the urgency is to keep the young and old healthy. The pandemic spreads as many of us are not observing COVID protocols such as wearing mask, observe social distancing and sanitize or wash our hands frequently.  People are scared as they lose near and dear ones, misinformation is reaching them from neighbors and through social media. Due to fear of social boycott and stigma they don't self-declare if they had been in contact with symptomatic or positive cases. Although state government advisories exist on all aspects of COVID protective behavior and steps to be followed, the available services are not accessible easily or “user friendly” when there are symptomatic cases, or with those with history of contact with positive cases .  
 Set up COVID Sahayata Kendra (CSK) in metro cities at existing unit offices of Child in Need Institute (CINI)in WB and Jharkhand and later expand to other locations. Each CSK will be managed by COVID recovered staff members of CINI and local volunteers.  CSK will be a repository of information on all aspects of COVID management, such as treatment at the nearest COVID designated hospital, home isolation/quarantine, testing, safe homes etc. On site counselling or tele-counselling to remove fear and anxiety and referral for tele-medicine counselling if required.  Data will be maintained on returned migrant labour, those in the neighborhood requiring assistance with food delivery or shopping. Health and Wellness kits will be distributed at the CSK which contain Nutrimix, soap, and menstrual pads adequate for a family for two weeks.  The CSK will manage a mobile team to raise awareness in the locality.Note: The donation amount will also include rent of autorickshaw 6 hrs/day for 5 days to raise public awareness. 
 <ul><li>COVID SahayataKend (CSK) will complement government efforts to provide all COVID related information.This will ensure timely access and utilization of services,reduce pressure on an already overburdened and understaffed health care system and prevent deaths.</li></ul><ul><li>CSK will reduce misconceptions, stigma and fear in the community,motivate self- declaration among those with history of contact with symptomatic/positive cases.Motivate those who have not yet been vaccinated and thus reduce transmission and further spread.</li></ul><ul><li>Free distribution of Wellness kits and its use will further reduce transmission of the virus in the home and when outside.
