For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. “The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. Developing Indigenous Resources India (DIR-I) is a non-profit and Charitable Trust which strives to uplift and empower the destitute, neglected, and low-income communities of our country. DIR has been actively at work in the urban slums of Punjab since 2006, focusing on preventative healthcare, primary education, and women’s income generation. By design, DIR positions the community members not as beneficiaries of assistance, but as implementers of change. We employ women in low-income communities as Health Promoters. They are taught on a variety of topics relating to maternal and infant healthcare and nutrition and serve their community with this knowledge. Their tasks include: monitoring the weights of children under five, ensuring children are immunized, giving children Vitamin A supplements and deworming medicine, providing antenatal and postnatal care for pregnant women, and holding health/nutrition workshops in the community. We focus on preventative healthcare measures and equipping women from within the community with the necessary knowledge and skills to permanently solve their own issues. Children who are malnourished and more than 3 kg underweight are invited to our Nutrition Improvement Priority Program. Here we feed underweight children and at-risk pregnant mothers low-cost, high-calorie, high-protein lunches, Monday to Friday.DIR also provides vocational training to girls and women through our sewing course, increasing their chances of employability and self-employment. The main goal of our income generation program is to empower women to become financially independent so that she can fulfill her personal needs and can raise the socio-economic status of her family.

Corona virus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new virus. This disease causes respiratory illness with symptoms such as dry cough, fever, and in more severe cases, difficulty in breathing leading to pneumonia. India is a country of more than 1.3 billion population. It has extreme poverty in many areas, especially in some of slums of cities.Spread of infection is fast since people travel long distance to place of work . Due to lock down, thousands of migrant workers were stranded, initially many of them returned home on foot. India has high no. of tuberculosis and respiratory diseases patients. Air pollution is prevalent to this, drug addiction and smoking aggravates and ads high risk of coronavirus infection. As per today's news report, In India there are 9,352 Covid-19 cases, in which 979 have recovered and 324 deaths reported. We have already seen cases in the slums of Mumbai, as we all know one of the biggest slums in the world with millions of people living next to each other. In these slum areas the virus has appeared and it stays on quite until it hits the target population, and shows us in symptomatically cases especially amongst the children and the elderly. 
 Our Health Worker began learning about the transmission and Prevention of the virus on January 20, before the virus was declared a pandemic and before the first cases came to India. The DIR INDIA's Health workers team Started committee meetings on Covid-19 awareness for the residents of Janta Colony, Safeda Colony, Nayagaon and in Dhanas's Area. The health workers taught this information through presentation, education programme to all residents of Janta Colony, Safeda Colony, Nayagaon and in Dhanas area. Through Child Activist Programme information given to all children of the adopted basti. The Health Team gave the information on Covid 19 through presentation,using posters and giving demonstration on hand wash technique and also generating awareness on different types foods to eat built the immune system.DIR INDIA has a strong foothold within the communities of Janta Colony and Safeda Colony, Nayagaon, as we organisation has been working since 2006 in this area, on the subject of community preventative healthcare and nutrition. The first case of Covid 19 in Chandigarh was reported on 19 March 2020. In India lock down was announced on 23 March 2020 after midnight till 14th April 2020. DIR INDIA works with a population of approximately 15,000 people in Janta Colony, Nayagaon and approximately 4,500 population in Dhanas, in both these areas, it is migrants and labour community from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Nepal. When the first case of localised transmission was reported in Chandigarh our Health Promoters conducted a full survey in their assigned areas to identify those most at risk of contacting the virus, especially Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education &amp; Research, Chandigarh (PGIMER) hospital workers and those in the Hospitality industry, working in hotels, restaurants, or as drivers. Since India has been on lock down, DIR INDIA has identified 173 most underprivileged families who are thrive day to day livelihood and has no mode of earning money during this lock down, with the help of our generous donors DIR INDIA has been able to distribute rations to these needy Families, with packages filled with basic items like rice, wheat flour, cooking oil, sugar, salt, tea leaves, pulses, and soap. The Distribution was done by our health team under the strict supervision of CEO Dr. Asha Katoch and DIR INDIA’s senior staff. Rasan distribution started by DIR INDIA From 30 March 2020 and is continuing till date. 
 Important factor in preventing the spread of the Virus locally is to empower the citizens with the right Information and taking precautions as per the advisories being issued by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. DIR INDIA's proposed Solution is to continue our work as Health Workers in these communities to educate the residents on how to prevent the Transmission of the disease, by promoting measures such as social distancing, proper hand washing techniques, as well as Dispelling any myths that have developed in these communities. Our Health Workers are local women from the community who are taught on healthcare and nutrition by certified doctors and dietitians. The Health Workers are already knowledgeable of the most vulnerablePopulations in these communities, such as pregnant women, the elderly and those with disabilities, and we are able to tailor our Program to fit to the specific needs of the most at-risk people. For examples, our Health Workers will ensure the pregnant women in their Assigned areas are still receiving prenatal supplements and have stable fetal heartbeats and blood pressure levels.
