E&amp;H Foundation is a Delhi based organisation working to enable quality education and healthcare for the underprivileged children.Since its inception in 2012, E&amp;H Foundation has reached 19,000 children in 3 districts of Uttar Pradesh and aims to reach 1,00,000 children by 2025.E&amp;H partners with successful low cost replicable models working in the field and helps them scale to reach more number of children at a faster rate. In India, socio-economic circumstances of a child strongly govern the type of school, education, and quality of life she will live. While enrollment in schools is common, the quality of education being provided is extremely poor, especially in the state of UP. ASER 2014 shows that 71% of class 8 children in UP cannot even read class 2 Hindi textbooks. These precious year spent in school with no learning is a huge loss to these underprivileged children and their families. Every child deserves access to quality education and healthcare to become contributing members of society and live a quality life. 
 E&amp;H Foundation is enabling quality education for the underprivileged children in UP by researching and partnering with highly successful proven models on the ground and helping them scale up at a very low cost. Currently E&amp;H Foundation has partnered with Gyanshala model that is helping children achieve grade appropriate learning in classes 1-4 at a low cost of ₹5000 per child per year compared to average government cost of ₹12000 per child. E&amp;H Foundation also works to increase community engagement, liaison with the government, run advocacy programmes, as well as facilitate the implementing organisation to become sustainable. It takes only INR 10,000 annually to educate two children, and an annual contribution of 1 Lakh can take care of an entire classroom of 25 children. 
 Since its inception, E&amp;H Foundation has provided quality education to 13000 children in 3 years for grades 1-4 in 3 districts of UP - Farrukhabad, Kanpur, and Lucknow. Independent studies show that the students have consistently attained grade appropriate learning scoring 100-­‐150% higher marks compared to government school children and almost comparable to India’s best CBSE schools at ₹5000 per child per year, creating scaling up potential. More than 55% students being educated by at such E&amp;H Foundation sponsored classes are young girls, helping bridge the gap between male and female literacy rate.

Gift education to underprivileged children

For the current year 2020-2021, while enrolments were being finalised, due to lockdown and widespread fear of Corona virus, classes remain suspended this summer. In early May 10-12 cases of corona virus were also reported in Farrukhabad and the area is expected to see further strengthening of lockdown. Our classrooms (Gyan Shala) in the Farrukhabad regions of UP are located in the most marginalised bastis/ urban slums in the district. Approximately 70% of parents of the students enrolled in our program are involved in Zardozi / Zari work. Other 30% are involved in daily wage labor work in trades e.g. construction, cold storage, shops and vending, rickshaw pulling including e-rickshaws. As economic activities remain suspended and will take time to pick up, families are struggling to meet their daily survival needs despite support from government and in certain cases by communities near by. Paltry savings have been exhausted and survival is becoming a key issue. Urgent need is to support these children and their families to sustain and survive these multiple lockdowns. Especially since children are exposed to risk of malnourishment and hunger during these times, which will further affect their association with and access to quality education post COVID. Debts are already increasing and families have already started selling few assets they have, to survive.  
 Over the next 100 days, E&amp;H Foundation will provide relief to these distressed families for situations emerging out of COVID 19 pandemic in Farrukhabad town. Target communities are approximately 3000 vulnerable families of children studying in our classes in over 40 urban slums in Farrukhabad. The Foundation will provide awareness on COVID mitigation, provide relief of key essential items in the form of food kits and provide support to families to dealing with COVID in an effective manner. The foundation will further assist these families over the coming months with accessing government schemes, jobs and getting back on their feet. E&amp;H Foundation will implement the project in partnership with our field partner, Education support Organization (ESO), also called Gyan Shala because of the successful education model they have promoted. The Foundation will provide relief to these families twice in the period of 100 days. Each food kit packet is for Rs 1,000/-E&amp;H Foundation's trustees and advisory members are committed to 100% matching entire project amount to reach 3,000 families at scale immediately.*Each of the food kit will have following items 10 kg Atta, 5 kg Rice, 2 Kg pulses, 1 litre cooking oil, 1 kg, salt, turmeric, soaps and masks and will cost Rs. 1,000 per packet including packaging, transportation and logistics. 
 This 100-day initiative to support the 3000 families at bottom of the pyramid population, whose children need to come back to learning w.e.f Sept 1, 2020, need support to sustain their livelihoods in the absence of daily wages and work. Sustaining these families through these tough times will ensure that these children stay nutritious, healthy and engaged and manage to come back to learning when we re-open classes while their family members get back to their jobs/work in the coming months.

COVID Relief and Rehabilitation of Vulnerable Households in Urban Slums of UP

Every successful and developed country, without exception has educated its children and brought women into workforce. India unfortunately has not been able to do this. This has vast consequences. Educating children and bringing women into work force leads to productivity growth, helps people move into urban jobs, creates a competitive economy that can spur growth.  Out of total 298 million school going age children in India, 37 million (12.5%) children don’t go to school (GOI, ESAG 2018). Of those who go to school, learning levels are abysmally low. 57% children in class 5 cannot read class 2 Hindilevel text and 75% cannot do simple division. Further, 30% in class 8 cannot read class 2 Hindi text book and 55% cannot do simple division (ASER Report – 2022). Low learning level leads to high dropout from schools at 6th, 9th and 11th grade level and are significantly higher for underprivileged children especially girls. Of 113 million adolescent girls in India, only 30% graduate at grade 10 and only 8.3% graduate. Almost 50% of them are married before 18. Providing quality education at primary level is single most important way forward to address above critical issues. 
 E&amp;H Foundation has been addressing the critical need of India by enhancing learning levels at primary level by reaching out to vulnerable children and parents, organising and setting up remedial classes in slums and remote villages, recruiting and training teachers regularly, teaching children every day using proven pedagogy and collaborating with successful and proven models. Students study through four subject worksheets which are iterative in nature. Children are encouraged to learn and engage through activities, storytelling and songs and in joyous culture. A baseline assessment of students’ learning levels is conducted at the beginning. Students are assessed through regular oral examinations, mid-term and end-term assessments and third-party evaluations. The field supervisor works with parents to ensure that children do not drop out and come regularly to classes. This intensive approach has resulted in improved grade appropriate learning, reducing dropouts and increased awareness amongst parents to continue children’s education and not drop them out from school. So far E and H Foundation has provided quality education to 25000 underprivileged children at primary level. Pilots are also being run to mentor middle and secondary class children to continue education through a community outreach program.  
 During the year 23-24, E and H foundation aims to reach out to 5000 more children with a total budget of Rs 2 Cr. Out of total amount, this campaign aims to raise Rs 30 lakh to support the initiative for the academic year 2023-24. We aim to achieve the following impact from this project:  1.     At least 70% of children will have more than 70% attendance 2.     Approximately 50% of the children will be girls. 3.     At least 70% of the children will achieve grade-appropriate learning levels.  This project would enable education for 5000 underprivileged children who would otherwise have been out of school and deprived of access to quality primary education and will reduce the gap in learning while encouraging both parents and students to empower children’s studying and learning. Your support will help in motivating and enabling long-term learning of underprivileged children, give them confidence and a chance to realise their potential and give these children and their families a significant possibility to get out of chronic poverty and change their future and destiny.

Building India through quality education to underprivileged children

Since its inception, E&amp;H Foundation has facilitated quality education for over 20,000 underprivileged children in Uttar Pradesh and helped in preventive healthcare. In 2020, due to the COVID emergency, we intervened in our work areas in UP, India reaching 30 villages, covering 6000 families and worked on enabling COVID mitigation and awareness campaigns along with facilitating access to entitlements and government programs. Besides, the foundation provided food kits to 1000 most vulnerable families. The ongoing second COVID wave in India is more intense and has penetrated rural and small semi-urban areas. This is very serious. Urgent efforts are needed to support underprivileged families as they continue to gasp for breath and struggle to establish timely access to healthcare support. The critical need is to address the lack of life-saving oxygen and essential medical supplies/facilities and to improve awareness amongst vulnerable population about COVID appropriate behaviour, managing minor cases at home, removing vaccine hesitancy etc. Efforts are also needed to improve the long-term resilience of vulnerable families by facilitating access to various government programs to support farmers, direct bank transfer, providing rations through PDS, enabling pension and increasing access to government insurance programs. There is a dire need to intervene and limit damage towards the ongoing healthcare and humanitarian crisis. 
 <ol><li>Limiting the spread of COVID by raising awareness and promoting COVID appropriate behaviour with underprivileged families along with large-scale mask distribution.</li><li>Advising on managing mild COVID cases in collaboration with district health administration aided by distribution and use of oxymeters by ASHA and teachers.</li><li>Facilitating access to life-saving oxygen through oxygen concentrators. These will be made available to patients on a rotational basis.</li><li>Facilitating access to PMJAY and state-sponsored health insurance to underprivileged families for hospitalization along with removing vaccine hesitancy and creating linkage to important Govt programs e.g. PMKSSY (subsidy to farmers), PDS, pension programs for widows, disabled and old age persons and MGNREGA etc.</li><li>Providing emergency food support to most marginalized households.</li></ol> 
 Through this appeal, E&amp;H Foundation aims to reach 50 villages, covering 10,000 underprivileged families or 50,000 beneficiaries over the next 6 months. The budget outlay to carry out these activities is Rs 50 lacs. Specific impact areas are:<ul><li>Promoting COVID appropriate behaviour with 10000 families - 50,000 people.</li><li>Distribution of masks to 6000 underprivileged families-30,000 masks.</li><li>Providing critical oxygen supply to over 1000 patients on a rotational basis through arranging 25 oxygen concentrators.</li><li>Providing 150 Oxymeters at village levels to ASHA and teachers based in the community for better home management of COVID cases and timely advice.</li><li>Increasing access to government programs for 3000 families.</li><li>Facilitating food support for 2000 marginalized families.</li></ul>
