For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. Kancheepuram is a district in Tamil Nadu where Ekam has a fairly strong presence through its network of stakeholders. The district whose infant mortality rate is 27 per 1000 live births, also fares badly with respect to the status of its maternal health. Stakeholder discussions reveal that the poor community awareness and late referrals to the hospital are major contributors to the problem. In addition, the main tertiary care hospitals are ill-equipped to treat thepatients who are referred to due to lack of adequate infrastructure, consumables, medicines, etc. 
 -Providing hospitalization support, medicines, drugs, injections, blood, etc. to needy children.-Providing medical equipment to the newborn in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or Specialised Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) in a government hospital.-Conducting camps or activities to screen children needing healthcare support in the community.-Providing awareness and training on health-related topics to the community.-Training and support to the healthcare staff in ICDS (Integrated Child Development Services) centres on initiatives -Training adolescents on reproductive and sexual well-being of adolescents. 
 The 2-year program will focus on bringing about a reduction in the number of deaths at the health facility level. Government hospitals (selected facilities) will be provided with lifesaving equipment and consumables. Village committees and youth groups will be provided with training and behaviour-change workshops. Children identified will be provided with appropriate government healthcare support and if required, private hospitalization support.The overall budget for the program is Rs 2620800.It is envisaged that there will be a marked improvement in the community’s awareness and behaviour with respect to their health. In addition, it is estimated that the village panchayat committees and youth committees will take charge of their community’s health and will function independently. Finally, the objective of the exercise is to bring about a reduction in the number of neonatal, child deaths and maternal deaths in the project area.

Coverage and quality of ante and postnatal care for women and child care tend to be relatively poor. Due to this the focus of maternal and child care and the awareness around it is heavily tilted towards the prevention of mortality and morbidity rather than the promotion of health. The first 1,000 days - the period from conception covering the pregnancy and the child’s first two years of life - represent a crucial window of opportunity for facilitating optimal growth and development of children. An eclectic approach with an entire range of opportunities to increase the well-being of mothers before, during, and after pregnancy and support nurturing newborn care is vital. 
 Ekam Academy is an educational department run by Ekam foundation with the aim of providing a set of offline and online tools that help to educate facility and community workers about the healthcare system of society and exclusively in the sphere of maternal and child health. It is designed to act as a single-window system and a sustainable platform to learn, share, and discuss information related to Maternal and Child Health Care. The foundation is firmly driven to alleviate the misery faced by the deprived and underprivileged sectors of the community due to social and economic inequalities through the empowerment of the youth and the community with appropriate knowledge.
