Help Disabled Children with Shelter & Care

For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Dr. Bhagat prioritizes the health of the seniors and ensures that they receive three balanced meals a day based on their precise health requirements. Need for the fundraiserThe humanitarian mission of SHEOWS is making an impact in the area, as more and more people are being rescued and brought to Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. To meet the financial costs of running the home, SHEOWS needs support to continue providing the residents with all the facilities that they need. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. FOD was founded by Dr. Rajinder Johar, an occupational therapist with over 20 years of experience from King George’s Medical College, Lucknow, after he was rendered bed-ridden for life following a gun-shot injury to his cervical spine. He became quadriplegic (paralysis of all four limbs); while he had the option of succumbing to his condition and leading a meaningless, dependent life; he chose to gather all his force and bounce back with a vengeance. To put his academic and professional knowledge and vast experience to good use, he set out on a mission to rehabilitate people living with disabilities by assessing their pressing needs and introducing programmes to meet those needs. As after becoming disabled, he spent ample time thinking about and planning a way to rehabilitate people stuck on crossroads of various disabilities.

Disabled people form 10 per cent of the population in India. Over 90% of them are unskilled, unlettered and live in poor socio-economic conditions with no job opportunities either in government/ public or private sector for such individuals. Based on the concept, 'Don't give them fish, teach them fishing', the Apna Rozgaar Scheme, which started in 1998, is one of the major projects of FOD. Under this scheme, disabled people who are illiterate, unskilled and poor with no opportunity of getting employed either in private or government sector, are economically rehabilitated by initiating them into a trade of their choice. This enables them to financially support themselves as well as their dependants. 
 FOD, through its Apna Rozgaar Scheme, is assisting people with disabilities to break away from this vicious circle of poverty-illiteracy- unemployment by offering them interest free financial loans. FOD has a number of firsts to its credit including publishing of India's first magazine on disability as well as projects like Apna Rozgaar, Beyond Limits and Gyan Path. We strive to enable disabled people with low socio-economic status earn their livelihood, promote quality education amongst children, encourage artists and artisans with disabilities to showcase their talent and create awareness on issues related to disability. Besides these we take other initiatives to mainstream persons with disabilities. 
 ARS is aimed at alleviating poverty, reducing unemployment and main-streaming people with disabilities. It also prevents them from falling prey to anti-social elements who exploit their disability to meet their nefarious goals. Till date ARS has reached out to 380 poor disabled individuals, in and around Delhi, in gainful employment with the success rate of above 80%. We cater to all kinds of disabilities, though the majority of ARS entrepreneurs are physically disabled; hearing impaired, visually impaired and leprosy cured people. FOD was conferred with the prestigious Helen Keller Award 2003 exclusively for this service on the eve of World Disabled Day and Red & White Bravery Award for its exceptional act of social courage.

Cater the needs of the disabled through Apna Rozgaar Scheme

Disabled people; especially women among them are the most marginalized in Indian society. They are deprived of political, social, economic, and health opportunities. The problems of women with disabilities become very complex with other factors such as social stigma and poverty. They remain neglected even when it comes to rehabilitation programmes. The prejudice surrounding their ability and value continues to perpetuate the view that educating and training them is futile. Opportunities for girls with disabilities to receive an education or to attend training courses are available to only a few. 
 FOD is more than 2 decades old. It has expertise in economic rehabilitation of people with disabilities. We have already built the centre for multi-purpose rehabilitation of persons with disabilities in Najafgarh. It would impart training in vocational skills and create self/group employment for people with disabilities in an integrated setup. After training people with disabilities; especially women in stitching and tailoring skills, FOD would give them interest-free loan to start their individual or group units to earn livelihood out of the skills learned. FOD would also help them with forward and backward linkages to market their produce. 
 Beneficiaries are economically independent and self-reliant with developed skills and earning capacity. They also have individual/group bank account with savings for seasonal fluctuations. They have a sense of competence, dignity and standing. Buying capacity has also increased for day-to-day living. Beneficiaries have a better standard of living, the ability to afford white goods, better food, clothing and housing and better medical facilities. Women amongst them would get due recognition in the families and they have equal say in decision making matters of their families.

Covid-19 impacted the education system for all the children. Those with disabilities are the worst affected. In India, children with disabilities usually belong to socio-economically weaker households as compared to the other children. 72% of the disabled population in India reside in rural areas where the education system is already compromised. Further, the inaccessibility of education for many children with disabilities is also due to poor financial resources. A large number of children could simply not attend online classes for want of a digital device and due to inaccessible teaching learning materials. 
 We have to address this issue holistically- right from ensuring that the child is not denied admission in school due to disability to ensuring that s/he is learning well so that he doesn’t grow up to be a dependent family member but, on the contrary, is able to take care of his dependents. We will address the parental pressure on the child to work and contribute to family income and their inability to supplement and complement what has been taught in the class and work towards creating an environment conducive to education at home. One thing positive that the Pandemic has taught us is that virtual intervention is possible and it can supplement and complement classroom teaching.We will catch them young, help them go to school/ college regularly and coach them virtually, provide the digital device where required, along with holding periodical personal sessions so that the child is learning well. 
 200 students with disabilities studying in regular schools and learning well.They are not merely attending schools but comprehending what is being taught.They are being coached to help them understand the concepts and learnings of different subjects.These students will grow up into contributing members of the family as well as society rather than being dependent on their family.
