For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Poor nutrition contributes to nearly half of all child deaths under age 5 and impairs the physical and mental development of millions of children.India is home to more than 25% of the world’s undernourished, and children are the worst affected. Each year more than a million children die and many more suffer from physical and mental impairment due to poor nutrition during the critical first 1000 days: from onset of their mother’s pregnancy to their second birthday. With more than 48% of children under 5 affected by stunting – children too short for their age due to lack of nutrients and suffering irreversible damage to brain capacity – and 20% of children defined as wasted, meaning they do not weigh enough for their height, India faces a potential crisis in its effort to combat poverty. But that is not the full impact of undernutrition on India’s future prosperity. Today the cost of undernutrition is a drop in GDP of up to 2.5%. In looking to the future and the various pathways of undernutrition especially the cognitive and physical impact on children and the additional medical costs due to ill health, this drop in GDP can go as low as 11%. Children stunted at age 5 will have an earning power 20% lesser than a well-nourished child. Undernutrition perpetuates the cycle of poverty. A well-nourished child is 33 percent more likely to escape poverty. They will learn better in school, be healthier and grow into productive contributors to their economy. Good nutrition provides the “grey matter infrastructure” to build India’s economic future. 
 FMCH works to broaden the use of proven interventions and to develop and test new solutions.FMCH, through Project Poshan, provides known interventions that work to combat undernutrition in vulnerable communities and works to develop new and innovative tools for the future.•	Focus on First 1000 Days for mothers and children, which includes targeted inputs towards ante-natal and post-natal care, promotion of exclusive breastfeeding and complimentary feeding and intensive growth monitoring. •	Work with the Government and other NGOs to improve and strengthen their existing programs and services offered to mothers and children in the prevention of malnutrition and improved health.•	Direct intervention with Severe Acute Malnutrition •	FMCH uses a robust, web-based monitoring tool which gives not only real-time access to individual women and children that the team works for, but also present sound data to show progress against critical indicators such as improvement in birth weight, improvement in stunting and wasting status in the form of dashboards.

Malnutrition, a threat we have been tackling since independence, is potentially standing in the way of India encashing its demographic dividend. Children who are malnourished perform poorly at school, and earn up to 20% less than well-nourished individuals. Over a lifetime, this translates into remaining in the poverty cycle or plateauing at middle income - shockingly due to poor nutrition as children. 2 out of every 5 children in India are malnourished, linked to 50% of Indian women being anaemic. In the bigger scheme of things, we lose over $ 45 Billion of our GDP to malnutrition each year. Our mission at FMCH is to change these numbers. We believe that poor nutrition should no longer be a barrier for individuals to reach full potential. If communities and families have access to the right information about the First 1000 Days, they will make the right nutritional choices to ensure we have a world of healthy mothers and children, enabling India to  break the cycle of poverty.  
 Key cornerstones of our work are preventive measures - providing research based, contextual, actionable knowledge to communities; using data and technology to retain quality, drive decisions and accountability; and working with various stakeholders in the ecosystem to bring about a sustained behaviour change. We monitor and support the community activities for a year at least to ensure long term, sustainable behaviour changeIn order to solve the issue, we address the problem in a holistic way. We build capabilities of frontline workers along with monitoring and support the delivery of the programme. We contextualize the curriculum based on the needs of the community. Post the training, the frontline staff are able to manage the families better with a consistent quality of counselling and information. ABOUT THE FRONTLINE WORKERS The frontline workers are the crucial change makers at the community level. These teams reach a mother and her child and their family first. Their ability to influence community decisions around food, health and hygiene can prevent major public health disasters. Our aim to enhance the skills of these groups. We use innovative methods like demonstrating solutions that are contextual and continue to reinforce ‘best practices’. 
 With the strength of our training and support we believe our added cadre of frontline workers can reach more than 12,500 families in low income communities within India.
