“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. Covid-19 has changed the scenario across the globe. In India, with over one and a half months of nation-wide lockdown which that have been extended in different ways subsequently by many states, if there’s one thing everyone can agree on, it is that stringent social distancing measures have affected lives throughout the country unequally. The pandemic has destroyed the livelihood system of the people. The region has to face triple whammy – Covid-19 and lockdown, flood and landslides. All the three will impact the lives of the families in a negative way. Assam is already reeling under the first wave flood. It is essential that the intervention should focus on rebuilding the resilience of the community. FST wants to support this by rebuilding the economic activities of the selected families with a healing touch. While immediate relief support is needed yet the families need support that will serve them in longer period. Most of the state governments had allowed the resumption of normal economic activities. Yet the marginal and vulnerable families have limited resources. We have observed how lockdown has substituted the livelihoods. Barbers became milk sellers; tea stall owners started selling vegetables, cab drivers selling fruits and vegetables. There are stories to be told and documented. We want to contribute on building the lives in a better way by assisting them.  
 Our plan of intervention includes:-         Identification of the most vulnerable families form the location-         A one-time financial grant to start a feasible economic activity will be provided. Based on the selected activities, the assistance may be given to individual or collectives.-         Assist them in strengthening their economic system. We want to assist them with what is feasible and workable at the level of the families. Some of the suggested interventions are petty shops, pig rearing, poultry, seeds for horticulture garden, vegetables cultivation etc.-         We will organise meeting with the selected beneficiaries to finalise the individual plans.-         We will ensure that financial aid given through bank transfer. In case of purchase we will assist that the families in buying necessary materials from reputed suppliers or sellers. We will do purchase safeguard mechanism and list probable sellers/suppliers. In case of bulk purchasing, we will follow the accepted procurement system and norms of FST like minimum three quotations, approval of purchase committee etc.-         There may be situations where FST will directly procure from vendors and distribute the required materials to the families. In such cases money will not be transferred to individual family account.-         Families will be mentored through regular visits.  
 The most important Impact from the project is<ul><li>100 families start an economic activity whose livelihood is affected due to COVID-19, lockdown and stringent social distancing norms</li><li>Economic empowerment of women specially the ones who are the breadwinner of the whole family</li></ul>

Lives and Livelihood: Supporting Vulnerable Families in Guwahati, Assam

Over the past decades, Manipur has seen a substantial rise in the number of orphans due to various conflicts. These children are left with nothing, no family, no hope, no future and often have no access to any kind of counselling to overcome their trauma.They grow up amid violence and negativity which in turn results in a destructive adulthood and in a generation lost to violence. Orphanages provide their basic needs; but don't have the resources to provide emotional support. 
 Using music as a therapeutic tool, this project will bring emotional healing for children who have seen a lot of violence and trauma. Akhu (a grass-root musician) and his team will be providing music lessons to children of 2 orphanages in Imphal that shelter orphans of the conflict. The project will help them channel their inner feelings and provide a creative outlet to release the trauma through music, and will release a music album containing songs written, composed and performed by these kids. 
 The project will be a launch pad towards introducing music as a counselling method for children who have been affected by violence in Manipur. The orphans involved will be engaged in peace building exercises that will enable them to understand the cycle of violence, and equip them with tools to break this cycle. Since we are training the next generation of leaders of Manipur, this will also be a stepping stone towards building a network of peace builders for the future.
