Human trafficking in India is a horrifying crisis. Thousands of victims, primarily women and girl children, are exploited in red-light areas. Over 10,659 cases were reported between 2018-2022, but experts say that these numbers are likely a fraction of the reality due to underreporting, yet they still do expose the magnitude of the crisis. Girls make up 71.4% of missing children in India and a large number of these girls end up at red-light areas. Sex trafficking is particularly gruesome, with girls as young as 12 sold for as little as a few thousand rupees.

Infant India runs a home called Anandgram that cares for 60 HIV-positive orphaned children from underprivileged backgrounds. Through no fault of their own, these orphans contracted HIV, a serious disease. Without parents or guardians, these children have no access to medicines, doctors and the HIV treatments needed to stay alive. Infant India is an NGO that takes in these orphans and provides them with a home, nutritious food, medication and education for the rest of their childhoods and sets them on a path to have better and healthier futures. HIV-positive orphaned children face harsh discrimination and are outcast and shunned by relatives, neighbours, schools and society as a whole. The NGO has even come across children who have been forcibly thrown out of their schools, once it is discovered that they are HIV-positive. But these children suffer from more than the lack of medication or even access to education. By focusing on holistic and long term care, the NGO provides all that a child needs. Infant India’s safe and loving shelter, food and medical care tends to the children’s basic needs and keeps them safe and well fed and gives them the vital medication their bodies require to fight the disease. The NGO also provides education and skills training to give the children a future in which they can be self-sufficient, financially independent and live dignified lives. But the NGO does not want the children to spend their lives alone, after having been abandoned at such young ages. So when the children become adults, the NGO arranges marriages with suitable partners, something that would be difficult to do on their own. Because of this thoughtful care, these marriages have resulted in the births of around 34 babies who are HIV-free. Each of these children contracted the virus through mother-to-child transmission. In a few weeks Datta Bargaje learned that the mother died, leaving the child orphaned. Without care or guardians, this HIV-positive child was doomed to discrimination and death. One evening in September 2018, Nethra’s alcoholic husband doused her in kerosene, set her on fire, locked the door from outside, and walked away. Hearing her wails, neighbours came to Nethra’s rescue and took her to a government hospital. Despite third-degree burns, Nethra survived after months in the hospital. But she became almost immobile. She could hardly move her hands or head as her chin was almost fused to the neck. She survived on liquid and semi-solid food as she couldn’t chew or close her mouth. “My face was so severely disfigured that my mother hid all the mirrors at home so that I would not see myself,” recalls Nethra. As the low-income family couldn’t afford proper after-care or reconstructive surgeries, Nethra was getting suicidal when Agni Raksha, a Bangalore-based NGO came to her rescue. After multiple surgeries at the NGO’s ‘Safe Haven,’ its critical care unit, Nethra is back on her feet. She is trained in tailoring and now works odd jobs and takes care of her two children.Like Nethra, most burn victims who come to Agni Raksha belong to low-income families and almost 95% of them are women. While some are victims of severe forms of domestic violence by husbands, others try to commit suicide by immolating themselves because of constant harassment. But due to the pandemic and lack of funds, Agni Raksha run by Dr Prema Dhanraj, a burn victim herself, had to shut its free critical surgeries unit. It has been a huge blow to burn victims from low-income families. We have the building, beds and other facilities, but we don’t have funds to pay doctors and support staff or buy critical care equipment and medicines. I feel very bad for victims who require emergency treatment, reconstructive surgery and post-operative care. Our presence here is deeply woven into Goa’s culture—honored in temples, festivals, and local heritage. But now, the Goa government is trying to deny us the protection we need. Despite a landmark judgment from the Bombay High Court affirming our right to a Tiger Reserve, the government is challenging it in the Supreme Court. The Court quoted the Mahabharata in our defence: If there is no forest, then the tiger gets killed;If there is no tiger, then the forest gets destroyed.Hence, the tiger protects the forest and the forest guards the tiger! The Goa government’s lawyers have made wild claims—saying we want 1,000 sq. km for our reserve (wholly untrue) and that we’ll soon be roaming the entire state (atrocious)! For this, they are being paid Rs.25 lakh per appearance! What have we done to deserve this hostility? We’ve always coexisted peacefully with Goa’s people. But if&nbsp;you&nbsp;don’t act now, we risk losing our place in Goa’s wildlife legacy. The Supreme Court has referred the case to the&nbsp;Central Empowered Committee (CEC), whose recommendations will be considered by it on&nbsp;November 12, 2025.&nbsp;The hearings are in Delhi, and though we tigers can’t be there ourselves, we have the Goa Foundation, our trusted ally, fighting for us. But we need your help more than ever. The Goa Foundation -- the strongest and longest lasting of Goa’s environmental groups, -- has functioned with donations from ordinary Goans now for its entire life of 30 plus years. Goans have ensured that the annual expenses of this small but effective organization are always available.However in the last couple of years, the assaults planned by corporate parties and governments on the ecology and well-being of the citizens in the State have simply proliferated. They have also become bigger in scale. Our annual expenses have certainly increased. We are also seeking to involve many more young lawyers in our public interest litigation in the Courts. The Foundation’s legal cases are lodged in the High Court at Panaji, the National Green Tribunal at Delhi and the Supreme Court of India.The Foundation’s outstanding work spanning three decades (most of it reported at www.goafoundation.org), will convince you that this is one organization worth blindly supporting in small or large ways.The Goa Foundation’s annual expenses range between Rs.20 to Rs.30 lakh per year. This could be higher but for the fact that many people (especially lawyers) willingly fight the Foundation’s cases in the Courts pro bono (free of cost). Several activists assist the Foundation in its work (for example, verifying complaints, visiting problem sites) also free of cost. The Foundation works with few staff, that too, part-time. Nevertheless, office expenses have kept increasing steadily where they are beginning to pinch. Equipment (long depreciated) needs to be replaced. Travel costs of lawyers need to be taken care of. Young lawyers need to be supported in any case, especially if they are in training to be efficient environment lawyers.The Foundation’s daily work output includes Right to Information requests with several government departments, appeals, final appeals, demand for justice letters, drafting of petitions for the High Court, appeals before the National Green Tribunal, petitions, appeals and counters in the Supreme Court. These are simply endless, but often get substantial relief. For example, a petition forced the Tamnar Transmission Line Project to fold up its illegal work at the proposed electricity substation at Sangod (outside Mollem).Recent work has included legal challenges to all the three infrastructure projects which threaten Mollem National Park and the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary, and notification of a tiger reserve for Goa.Last year, in order to spread out its legal expertise among the Goan population, the organization organized its popular course on Public Interest Law, a 20 day course on all aspects of law and courts, with a strong environmental bias. .We continue to work extensively on environmental issues facing the people of Goa, including mining, Coastal Regulation Zone including turtle nesting sites, protected areas including wildlife sanctuaries and forests, protection of the Western Ghats in Goa, conservation of khazans and agricultural lands, air pollution (no to coal), etc.

The Goa Foundation -- the strongest and longest lasting of Goa’s environmental groups, -- was started by environmental activists in 1986. It has survived till now with a steady stream of donations from people who love Goa and who want Goa – both as an idea and as a place -- to survive for future generations. Thirty years later after its inception, the people in charge want to hand over the fighting organization to Gen Next. Handing over an organization without a Corpus Fund is not a good idea. Those taking over need to concentrate on fighting issues, not raising funds (though they will eventually do that as well). So we thought of a Survival Fund. It’s money you give us which will ensure the Foundation survives well into the next generation.The Goa Foundation’s outstanding work spanning three decades (most of it reported at www.goafoundation.org), will convince you that this is one organization worth blindly supporting in small or large ways.   
 For more than 30 years we never thought of a Survival (or Corpus) Fund. Now we think we need to get one going, to simply ensure that as the major environmental battles that threaten to engulf Goa unfold, the organization is strong enough to ensure an effective and sustained presence on behalf of the ordinary people of the State. You can choose whether the donation you want to make to the Goa Foundation will go to its annual operational requirements (this is a separate GiveIndia project) or to its permanent Corpus Fund. In the first instance, you give and support the expenses of the daily work of the Foundation. In the second instance, you contribute to ensuring the Goa Foundation does not close up after its founders leave. (The main ones in any case are already beyond 65 of age.) 
 Through our advocacy, public interest litigation and support for peoples' movements, we work in multiple areas. First of all, we work extensively on environmental issues in Goa, including mining, Coastal Regulation Zone including turtle nesting sites, protected areas including wildlife sanctuaries and forests, protection of the Western Ghats in Goa, conservation of khazans and agricultural lands, air pollution (no to coal), etc. We try to generate all pro-environment, pro-people research that is required for effective and sustained environmental battles that are engulfing the State in flames.We take a tough staff on pro-environment issues, tackling corporations, governments and bureaucrats without fear.Through our Goenchi Mati Movement (goenchimati.org), we try to ensure that the present generation of Goans (and their political leaders) think of the needs of the next generation and resources for their livelihood as well.
