I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. A Charitable society for the education and welfare of street children registered under the Society and Registration Act, Godhuli’s mission is to look after the well being of street/slum children on the Gandhian principles with special emphasis on free education as envisaged in article 45 and 21A of the Constitution of India. The society is managed by a Governing Body of retired civil servants and other eminent citizens with wide administrative background.With the passage of the Right To Education Act by the Government of India making education free and compulsory for the age group 6 to 14, Godhuli aims to inculcate the important habit of going to school amongst the slum children from the age of three years onwards thereby supplementing the government initiative.Godhuli presently runs two schools for approx. 400 slum children mainly in the age group 4 to 10 years at Meera Bagh near Vikaspuri (over two shifts) and Sagarpur, Dwarka catering classes from kg to 3rd. The schools provide free education, complete study material, uniform and light refreshment and also hold periodic health camps. Special emphasis is given to extra-curricular activities such as dance, singing, drama etc to transform the children into confident individuals. Picnics are also periodically organized for better exposure and fun learning. Regular interactions with the parents are organized to minimize dropout of the children and to ensure their continuance in conventional schools later on.The attendance in the schools remain quite satisfactory. Children look smart in their uniform and have shown a remarkable improvement in physical appearance.It is very heartening and encouraging to note that the children and their parent have shown excellent response and no student has dropped out from Godhuli schools.Godhuli is presently on look out for suitable premises in similar slums of Delhi to replicate its successful model of shaping the life of children of the marginalized society.

After the 'Right To Education Act' was passed, the Government of India has made education free and compulsory for the age group 6 to 14. But this declaration was no relief for some minors because the act excluded free education to the kindergarten kids. This evidently resulted in many kids still being deprived of education and exposure to school in the most tender age of their lives. Godhuli is an NGO which aspires to empower ever kid with education they deserve, no matter what age background they are a part of. The aim is to impart knowledge to the under-privileged children in their formative years and inculcate the important habit of going to school. 
 Godhuli currently is running two schools for approx. 400 slum children, all between the age group 4 to 10 years at Meera Bagh providing classes from kg to class three. The schools provide free education, complete study material, uniform and healthy refreshment packets. Periodic health camps are also conducted to ensure that all kids are mentally and physically healthy and fit. Apart from this, special emphasis is given to extra-curricular activities like dance, singing, drama etc. to ensure that every kid here grow into confident individuals. Frequent picnics are held for the kids to ensure that they get a better exposure and are exposed to fun way of learning. To make the kids more employable and skilled to enter into higher paying jobs later on, frequent skill education camps are also organized which also includes fully sponsored computer programs. 
 The most visible impact is that Godhuli has been able to create since the time it started functioning is that now, the parents realize benefits of admitting their children to school in the formative years. Highly satisfactory attendance in these schools is also a concrete proof that the idea of education is rightly being implemented. The dedicated group of trainers have been able to ensure that the children do not miss out on basic education. Further with emphasis on discipline and cleanliness, the children have shown a remarkable improvement in being well dressed which has further helped them in enhancing their overall physical appearance. One of the enduring impact of the schools is that no student has ever dropped out from Godhuli centres. This zero drop out rate is definitely a major win for us till today.
