“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. Kerala Floods 2018 - Update from the fieldThe torrential rains, the resultant overflowing rivers and a series of landslides have devastated the Northern and Central regions of Kerala. The government has opened 22 reservoirs on last Thursday, 16th August 2018. More reservoirs will be opened because the reservoirs have exceeded their capacity, thereby posing threats for more flooding. The worst affected districts are Palakkad, Ernakulum, Alappuzha, Idukki, Wayanad and Kozhikode. About 400 people have been reported dead and 54,000 houses have been washed away. More than 1,01,213 individuals are staying in 1026 Relief camps organised by the government. They are all at present staying in public buildings such as schools, government offices and marriage halls. The Cochin airport has also been shut down. Also, most of the trains have been cancelled and diverted through other routes. The road connectivity has been totally disrupted in Idduki and Wayanad, disrupting all commuting facilities. All telephone and electricity services too have been affected.  All efforts will be made to restore normalcy and to support the families affected by the floods. Due to the geographical spread of the flood affected areas, these areas lie scattered whereby reaching them becomes difficult. The affected population requires immediate help to come out of their condition. There is a need for collective and collaborative efforts of the corporates and other institutions to complement the efforts of the government to reach the unreached people with relief assistance. The collaborative efforts will bridge the gap between relief and early and long recovery efforts.

The government announced a complete lockdown in the country on 24th March, 2020 for the next 21 days. Muscle pain, sputum production and sore throat are less common. While the majority of cases result in mild symptoms, some progress to severe pneumonia and multi-organ failure. We are helping them through the distribution of the following:·  Distribution of Hygiene Kits·  Distribution of Family Essentials Kits·  Distribution of Personal Protective Equipment Kits·  Conditional Cash Transfers – As a huge no. of unorganized sector workers have been severely hit by the pandemic, Conditional Cash transfers (CCT) will be made directly to the bank accounts of these daily wage workers/ labourers/ migrant workers so as to increase the support to their families &amp; to reduce financial burden for a short termOperational Methodology·  Habitat will leverage on its local office and implementation partners who in turn will engage with the health network of the local authorities to engage with CBOs, SHGs and local organisations to identify community workers ·  The trained community workers will help distribution of Kits to further promote use of soap/ sanitisers/ floor disinfectants to help keep hands and surroundings clean·  Providing financial support through Conditional Cash transfers (CCT) which will be made directly to the bank accounts of these daily wage workers/ labourers/ migrant workers so as to increase the support to their families &amp; to reduce financial burden for a short term 
 Identified people will have the required be able to meet the usage of essential household item, hygiene and sanitation needs along with some cash flow to meet the other necessary requirements of the house.

Covid 19 Response - 2020

India is going through an unprecedented natural disaster with six states experiencing heavy to very heavy rains in the last few days.Maharashtra is the worst affected by the ongoing rains in the region. So far, nearly 2.5 lakh people have been displaced in the state, with the situation remaining especially grim in Satara, Kolhapur and Sangli districts.In Karnataka too, the situation is no different. Around ten districts of the state are flooded by Krishna river spurt. The release of water from dams in Maharashtra is adding to the flood woes of Karnataka. The floods and rains have brought all these states to a standstill, even as the government and administration are making efforts to rescue the affected people. Lakhs of people were evacuated to safer locations and relief camps.There is an immediate need for water, food and medical assistance in the relief camps and those who are staying with relatives and friends in the affected areas. There is also an immediate need for shelter and household materials so that people can strengthen the housing condition and restart their normal life. 
 Habitat for Humanity India team is on the ground for the rapid assessment of the affected areas. Based on the immediate assessment, HFH India is proposing a 2-phased Flood Response Program. In the initial Phase, HFH India will assist families with Emergency Shelter Kits and Humanitarian Aid Kits.•	Emergency Shelter KitsThe affected communities require a range of non-food items (NFIs). These include shelter items like CGI sheets, nylon ropes, Hand Tools like Machete, Hand Saw, Claw Hammer, drills, etc. •	Humanitarian Aid KitsThe affected communities also require urgent personal hygiene items (soap, towels, toothbrush, sanitary pads etc.) and household items (utensils, bedsheets, blankets bucket etc.) and other cleaning material (lebaching powder, water purification or chlorine tablets etc.) 
 The Emergency Shelter Repair Kit will help the affected families make rapid repairs to their damaged home and will provide families with a long-term solution for building their resilience to future disasters. This solution is not permanent, but the beneficiaries will be able to reuse the shelter kit materials for permanent repairs/ reconstruction over the next year. The immediate Humanitarian Aid Kit will assist the affected families in settling down in their daily routines by providing them items of everyday use. The primary goal of this response is to reduce the vulnerability of families most affected by the floods by enabling them to make their damaged homes safe and secure. The project will focus on the most severely affected areas in the region.

 The Target AudienceThe marginalized and vulnerable families including tribal communities across India, Migrant Workers, Cleanliness Workers, Commercial Sex Workers, Daily wage labourers, Farm widows and destitute women, Construction workers, domestic workers, small vendors, marginal farmers, agricultural sector workers, Waste pickers community and people with special needs, health care workers and frontliners (Police and Essential services Delivery personnel) across India.Project Objective·        To reduce insecurity of the marginalized families caused due to food and household needs shortage by Covid-19 outbreak. Support the Health care workers and frontliners with personal protective equipment Operational Methodology·        Habitat will leverage on its local office and implementation partners who in turn will engage with the health network of the local authorities to engage with CBOs, SHGs and local organisations to identify community workers ·        The trained community workers will help distribution of Family Essentials Kits, Hygiene Kits and PPE kits to further promote use of soap/ sanitisers/ floor disinfectants to help keep hands and surroundings clean
