Our newest Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Reckong Peo, the administrative hub of Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh is now operational. Alongside the MRF, we’ve also kicked off a robust Information, Education &amp; Communication (IEC) program aimed at promoting sustainable waste practices among households, shopkeepers, and tourists. Our on-ground team is conducting door-to-door awareness sessions, engaging schools, and collaborating with local authorities to build a community-led model of waste management. This combined approach of infrastructure development and community education ensures long-term impact, not just short-term clean-ups. New MRF and IEC Program in Reckong Peo, Kinnaur

We are proud to share that Healing Himalayas Foundation has begun construction of a new Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in the sacred town of Kedarnath, Uttarakhand—one of the four holy Dhams and among the most visited pilgrimage sites in India. Each year, thousands of devotees make the spiritual journey to Kedarnath. But with the growing footfall comes an alarming increase in unmanaged waste—threatening the fragile alpine ecosystem and the sanctity of this revered site. Our upcoming MRF aims to provide a structured and sustainable solution to this issue. The facility will support the collection, segregation, and processing of dry waste at the top, keeping the region cleaner and reducing the environmental impact of pilgrimage tourism. This initiative is part of our broader Char Dham Waste Management Project, focused on building resilience in these ecologically and spiritually significant locations. Alongside infrastructure, we are working closely with local stakeholders, shopkeepers, and temple authorities to raise awareness and encourage responsible waste practices. The goal is not only to manage waste—but to foster a culture of care and conservation in one of the holiest corners of the Himalayas.

Thanks to your generous contributions, we have successfully constructed two new Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs)—one near Barshaini which is now operational and is serving Kalga, Pulga, Tulga, Tosh, Shilha, and Barshaini Market and another in Powari, Kinnaur, which will be operational soon. These facilities are crucial in preventing waste from being dumped in landfills or burned, ensuring a cleaner and healthier ecosystem. Alongside the MRFs, we’ve launched extensive IEC (Information, Education, and Communication) programs in both regions, engaging locals, business owners, and tourists in waste segregation, responsible disposal, and sustainable practices. This ensures long-term community participation in keeping the Himalayas waste-free.This is a huge step forward, but we need your continued support to sustain operations, expand awareness, and build more such facilities.

A New MRF in Barshaini

Since last year July 2022 we have started the operations of 4 new MRFs (Material Recovery Facilities) wherein we collect roughly 5 tonnes of non biodegradable waste daily which other wise would have been dumped, landfilled or burnt openly. Step one to setup an MRF is to identify locations/villages/town which has huge tourist footfall in a short span of time. Step two is to engage with the administration/Panchayat/Concerned departments to understand absence of waste management facilities and come to an understanding of a way forward. The biggest stakeholders are indigenous communities hence a clarity of there participation is a must.Considering the Himalayan topography and procuring land to setup waste management units is a challenge hence step three is to get land from forest department. Step four is to get funds to construct MRF, install required machinery and a couple of vehicles to collect waste door to door and clear legacy waste sites around the village/town Now comes the most crucial part which is to operate Material Recovery Facility, make is sustainable and create a supply chain (reverse logistics)- This is the most time consuming process. a) It is imperative to collect segregated waste hence engaging &amp; teaching community to segregate the waste takes time. Although we start the process during the construction of the MRF but sometimes it's not possible.b) User fees - If its a village then we mainly focus to collect fees from commercial properties only. c) Selling the recyclable materials to the recyclers and generating revenue but considering the distance the logistical expenses are way too high to reach the goal. So what's the way forward ? We always try to keep the operations cost to a minimum, we take tips from unorganised sector to understand smooth operations. The growing influx of tourists, trekkers, and unregulated tourism has led to a silent but severe crisis—plastic waste and pollution choking the very trails we love to explore.We are on a mission to restore what has been damaged. What began with one man and a few sacks of waste has grown into a powerful environmental movement dedicated to cleaning the Himalayas, educating communities, and building lasting infrastructure for sustainable waste management.<h2>Our vision is to protect the natural ecology of these mountains while empowering local communities and promoting responsible tourism. Over the last nine years, we’ve conducted more than 1,000 clean-up drives, removed 1,633+ tonnes of non-biodegradable waste, and educated thousands through our IEC campaigns.</h2>Since 2021, we’ve built Eight Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) in some of the most remote Himalayan villages—including Rakcham, Reckong Peo, and Barshaini, Koksar—to decentralize waste collection and centralize recycling.
