For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. Anita comes from a disadvantaged background. Her parents are illiterate and she is the youngest among their four children. Her eldest sister has studied only up to primary school and is now married.

Her parents were ignorant about the importance of education and had never sent Anita to school despite being 7 years old when we found her. We noticed she was underweight and anaemic. Being fed only a meal or two everyday had taken its toll on Anita's health.

Once placed into our Play and Learn Centre, she began to learn creatively through songs and stories. Anita’s daily nutritional needs are taken care of with midday meals served at the centre and she has regular health check ups to monitor her progress. Over time her health and education has improved immeasurably, something both her parents and teachers have noted. Now Anita, a born leader, is a proud student in class 3 with such a bounty of confidence that she has been chosen as monitor of the class.

A wave of change

After her father died, 15-year-old Pooja sincerely wanted to help her mother earn money for her family without allowing her education to suffer. Initially she accompanied her mother as a domestic worker but was unhappy with the work.

During Diwali, she was enrolled into our craft and art class for girls. She has learned to make bridal Mehendi (Henna) and is adept at making jewellery. Her abilities are so good that Pooja has expressed her intent to enrol in the advanced classes for jewellery making.

Pooja now has many customers from her own community who place orders for her creations. Furthermore, this determined young girl wants to learn embroidery and other art work taught by us at IDEA four times a month. Now Pooja can help her mother without sacrificing her education.

IDEA has imparted skill training to more than 5000 youth and women since 2014 in beauty care, tailoring, bag making and catering under our livelihood programs . Many of these women were running flourishing business when the COVID-19 struck . Underprivileged people have been the most hit due to the Corona virus lockdown, according to our survey, 70% people are struggling for a survival . Their savings are drying up fast and in this scenario, women who run micro businesses are most affected and they need livelihood assistance in the form of monetary and non-monetary support to restart their business after lockdown.Due to the lockdown, flailing businesses, poverty at home there is anxiety, hopelessness and growing discontent among these women. They need personal counselling to solve these problems and need motivation regularly. To run a business successfully , they need handholding support as per their need. Many women may have to relook at the products they make and the marketing strategies they follow . They may need training for bringing better finesse in their products and professionalism in their field. Packaging, marketing, costing are the areas where some need handholding which is specific to their product. 
 We plan to give livelihood assistance in form of monetary and non-monetary support to 250 self-employed women who have graduated from our Tailoring, Beauty parlour and Cooking &amp; Catering courses.Need based monetary support in the range of Rs. 5000 to Rs. 10,000/- per beneficiary will help them start or restart their business after the corona virus lockdown since their savings have dried up, this support will help them cover their losses to some extent till their businesses begin to operate as before. Self Help Group of women will be encouraged to start micro-group enterprises and the monetary support will be in the range of Rs. 30000 to 50000/-. Women will have to repay the soft loan to a revolving fund so that more women can be supported .  Non-monetary support will include training in entrepreneurial development, training to refresh their business skills &amp; new relevant skills required due to COVID-19 . It will also include life skill sessions on health, stress management, mental health etc. so that they can cope with the newly added personal and professional stress.Social workers will provide personal counselling to solve these problems and to motivate and inspire them regularly. 
 Participants will get skill training , business development skills and will be equipped with skills to cope with the unexpected crisis . 250 needy women will be benefited from the project during the 1st year of the project and the monetary support will be continued by the Self Help Group . Financial assistance will support women to initiate/ revive and grow their business. Improved financial conditions of the family due to added income from the micro-enterprises of the women.The Business development skills and handholding support from our team will lead to growth in business and enable women to overcome challenges and ready for competingThe training in Business development program ( EDP) will consist of soft skills like handling stress, planning &amp; coping with business after COVID 19, motivational sessions and increasing the business (customers) etc. 15 participants will be enrolled in each session to maintain social distancing and for greater effectiveness. After the EDP training, women will be selected for further financial assistance in a phase wise manner based on their ready-ness.Due to creation of a revolving fund the impact of the project grant will be maximized and sustained.

Livelihood support to Corona virus affected micro-enterprises of women

More than 53% of children (67 million) in India, under the age of five, have no access to basic health care facilities. India also has the world’s largest gender survival gap with girls 61% more likely than boys to die between the ages of one and five. There is plenty of evidence showing that girls are given less food and health care than boys in India. Another alarming statistic is that 30% of all adolescent girls in India are married and at least 22% become mothers before reaching adulthood. With over 56% of the female population suffering from anaemia, young mothers are at great risk during pregnancy. We conducted a survey in the slum and found out that over 70% of the girls living there were anaemic. 
 The health condition of the girls required immediate supplementary nutrition and health check ups. We launched an Adolescent Health Care Programme to ensure that identified girls are provided with necessary medical care. Our programme includes providing supplementary nutrition to girls through meals. Our health camps run check ups for early identification of health-related problems and provide immediate treatment or we refer patients to the correct hospital. We also organise camps and workshops to spread awareness on health issues and related topics like the importance of having safe drinking water. 
 Our programme will support 200 adolescent girls. It will address their nutritional deficiencies and fulfil their needs while ensuring regular health check-ups are carried out. A donation of Rs.2,000 ($40) can give a growing girl a healthy life.

School drop out ration in underprivileged communities is very high. The reason for dropping out is usually very trivial, which can be avoided with proper guidance and support, Parents are usually uneducated and busy with their daily wage jobs, usually they are not aware of the importance of education. After primary school children stop going to school and take responsibilities like taking care of younger siblings or start working to support their family. 
 IDEA started study centres in these communities to encourage children to stay in school, by supporting them through activity based learning after school. IDEA study centres have trained instructors who are selected from their own communities who keep touch with children continuously. The instructors help children with home work, listen to their issues and also encourage them to take part in sports and other activities, IDEA also conducts sessions for parents, health checkups for children and also organize awareness programs for communities. 
 IDEA ensures that all the children enrolled in IDEA study centre complete schooling and guide them to join a professional course according to their ability. We provide our students and parents information about different courses and career guidance, we also help to understand different government schemes which they can avail.Now IDEA has its presence in more than 35 communities in and around Pune and 11 villages around Hinjewadi and Bhor, Maharashtra state, Mumbai, a few locations in Chennai and Alappuzha district in Kerala and since 2002 directly reached 58,942 children, 13,424 youth &amp; 22,566 women through its 5 core programmes.
