For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. More than 2.1 million Indians are HIV-positive, making India the third largest population of people with HIV after South Africa and Nigeria. Women and children constitute 44% of a total number of persons living with HIV in India. Only 49% of the patients were on Antiretroviral therapy (ART) in 2016. In the absence of proper intervention, more than 10,361 infected babies will be born annually (NACO technical report, 2015). More than 69,000 people lost their lives from AIDS-related illnesses across the country in 2017 and 88,000 Indians were diagnosed with HIV (UNAIDS 2018). Though we have made some progress, our efforts are in danger of dissipating unless they are consolidated. Research suggests that new cases are on the rise again in India while awareness about HIV/AIDS is dipping. 
 We work around Prevention – preventing transmission of HIV through targeted programming, education and awareness campaigns, Provide CARE: educate people living with HIV/AIDS about available treatment, ensuring access to care, and improving their well-being and EMPOWER vulnerable and affected communities by building vocational skills, supporting access to income generation opportunities, and linking them to social welfare schemes.Our Care &amp; Support Centers are located strategically very close to the communities and the ART Centers. It’s also a Drop-In-Center where communities, especially women and girls can access information, guidance and support. We have 360 such Care &amp; Support Center across 32 states and union territories in India.

Empower HIV Survivors with care & social support

23 lakh Indians are HIV-affected making us perhaps the world’s second largest HIV hub. The most startling fact remains that more than over 1 lakh socio-economically distressed children, including new-borns are HIV-affected. Paediatric HIV is one of the prominent causes of childhood morbidity and mortality across the world. More than 90% of HIV infections in children are the result of maternal-to-child transmission. Unfortunately, even after 40 years, people Living with HIV are still looking for a vaccine and now, the shortage in critical lifesaving medicines is sending fresh shockwaves to them.  There’s a dearth of paediatric ARV (Anti Retroviral) Drugs for the vulnerable and marginalised for the period FY 2022-23. Almost 1,16,500 HIV-affected children are in need of AL-p Tablets (Abacavir 60 mg + Lamivudine 30 mg), NVP Syrup &amp; Zidovudine Syrup  
 Alliance India, working in collaboration with NACO, is trying to work towards emergency procurement mechanism to ensure the delivery of quality assured, non-expired ARVs to infants and children living with HIV. This is an appeal to corporate, philanthropic institutions and philanthropists to play their part in ensuring that life-saving ARV drugs are delivered to infants and children on time, without fail. We are striving hard to amass resources to help children with their treatment, adequate nutrition, education, abuse-free environment and a platform to nurture their talents. Our Care &amp; Support Centers are located strategically very close to the communities and the ART Centers. These are hubs where communities, especially women and children can access information, guidance and support. Support Children living with HIV

We work with people living with or at increased risk of HIV. If they are not protected and get infected with Covid-19, it can prove fatal. We cannot end HIV without first responding to Covid-19 infection and related challenges. The Impact of COVID on our communities<ul><li>Many of our outreach workers, the workforce at the forefront of HIV response and now Covid response have reported positive for Covid-19. We urgently require financial assistance to support them and their families to cope with the out-of-pocket medical expenses and essential needs.</li><li>Our key population whose livelihood depends on sex work, begging, badhaai and dance in celebrations has come to a full stop. They are unable to pay their rents and purchase daily essentials which is pushing many of them to depression and hopelessness.</li><li>Mental health issues among key populations and field team are at rise like anxiety, depression due to fear of exposure, death of dear one, not able to have quality times with friends/peers.</li><li>For people living with HIV, accessing ART medicines is also a challenge as many ART centers are located within public health facilities which increases the risk for exposure to already immunity compromised individuals.</li><li>Gender based violence increased as women being at home with their partners who too are undergoing stress due to lack of money and increased consumption of alcohol or other intoxicating stuff.</li><li>We are well connected with more than 200 adolescents and young people living with HIV in India who could prove to be extremely useful human resource in the current situation. We have built their capacity through state and national level training and workshops in the past. We can engage these young people to once again come forward and support in the provision of ART (treatment for HIV) and other essential services through their peer networks. We need financial support to engage them on an honorarium basis for the short period of emergency. </li></ul> 
 Together, we can: Ration kits for families with livelihood crisis Access of medicines &amp; health care facilities. Our outreach workers, several of them living with HIV themselves, facilitating medicines to HIV patients through our centers and sometimes even by doing door step deliveries. We are also facilitating linkages for COVID testing and vaccination for vulnerable key populations.Hygiene kits for our communities encouraging them to use masks, gloves, sanitizers and regularly wash hands using the soap. Counselling and Mental Health Support to high-risk HIV populationCrisis Response – create a pool of resource for urgent health needs, nutrition, essential supplies and livelihood needs   
 Leveraging our experience in community action and working closely with the government in our HIV-COVID-19 Response, we provided humanitarian aid during the COVID-19 lockdown period March 2020 to September 2020 with generous support from funders like Global Fund, Azim Premji Philanthrophic Initiatives (APPI), Capgemini &amp; others. The Impact we can create is: <ul><li>Reduced co-infections among people living with HIV as that can turn lethal for them, whether it is COVID-19 or TB infection.</li><li>Reduced mortality rate among people living with HIV</li><li>Vulnerable communities such as sex workers, transgender, people who use drugs are safe, protected and healthy.</li><li>Better access to treatment for HIV amid COVID-19 surge</li><li>Reduce anxiety and distress among key populations</li><li>No one should go hungry during this curfew, lockdown and lack of income</li></ul>
