For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. The second wave of COVID 19 attacked India with unprecedented fury. While hundreds of thousands died, millions faced acute food shortages and hunger. The common refrain was "if COVID didn't kill them, hunger would". Women and children, especially girls were worst affected. The immediate and most urgent need is to provide and secure families with a means to achieve food security and thus fight the long-term effects of malnourishment. iPartner India is implementing a project called ‘Rakshan’ in Rajasthan. Rakshan works on creating safe spaces for girls and women and aspires to create villages that are violence-free and where girls and women can exercise their agency to make their own choices. Like the whole of India, the villages in Rajasthan were also affected by COVID-19. One of the activities carried out in the villages where Rakshan is being implemented is to help families become self-sustainable. After the initial relief work, it was realised that micro-interventions like setting up a kitchen garden help families sustain during the pandemic and also in the future when livelihoods would be hit. The immediate and most urgent need is to provide families with a means to achieve food security and thus fight the long-term effects of malnourishment. 
 iPartner India is committed to empowering women to become self-reliant. The pandemic affected everyone but affected the incomes of poor families the most. Thousands went hungry during the first wave of the pandemic. As a solution, we trained women from 1,895 families to set up kitchen gardens. These could be easily maintained on a small patch of land with basic training. Women were able to produce organic vegetables which they used and sold the excess vegetables grown to achieve sustainability. Rakshan team has identified 2,040 families in the 27 intervention villages of Tonk, Rajasthan. iPartner India will provide training to these women to set up and maintain kitchen gardens and will also provide them with initial supplies/seeds etc. The proposed project will set up kitchen gardens for 2,040 extremely poor and vulnerable families in the Tonk district of Rajasthan to help them keep hunger and malnutrition at bay during the pandemic. Women will be trained and empowered to manage these kitchen gardens. We have already trained 1,895 families with food security during the second deadly wave of the pandemic as it became clear that hunger could be more deadly than COVID. This concept has proved to be sustainable and has a high impact. Therefore, we propose to train additional women farmers from 2,040 families. The aim is also to make families self-reliant and live a life of dignity. 
 We envisage the Kitchen gardens concept having multiple long-term impacts on women and their families. 1) The first almost immeasurable impact is the prevention of hunger-related deaths and an increase in nutrition levels with the consumption of healthy and organic vegetables. 2) Women will have an alternate source of income from selling the surplus. 3) Financial inclusion training on Savings and setting up bank accounts and training on reinvestment of surplus funds would ensure long-term sustainability.

Women have been systematically excluded from higher education, vocational trainings and as a result remunerative work and employment. Families and households give greater priority to the education and training of boys and men, creating a vicious cycle whereby girls and women are consistently denied bettering of their work and employment prospects, their access and capacity for decision-making and the possibility of determining the course of their own lives. The last decade has seen a percentage increase of women in higher education, but a steep decline in the women workforce participation rate.One of the ways to break this vicious cycle of denying women their rights is creating the training and development opportunities for resource poor women and increasing their access to them. 
 iPartner India presents an innovative model providing livelihood with dignity to rural woman whilst also saving our environment. Women are stitching cloth bags to replace plastic bags which are now being banned due to hazardous impact on the environment. We are facing one of the most serious environmental disasters in history. Discarded plastic wrappers, cups and bags litter the streets of Indian cities and beaches and make up part of the mountain-sized landfills on the outskirts of our cities!The need of the hour is to find a sustainable replacement for the plastic bags. Seeking an alternative to plastic bags, iPartner India has collaborated with garment factories who are donating their excess fabric to these women, who then stitch simple shopping bags which are then sold to shop owners and other retail outlets for their customers to use.With over 21 billion tonnes of fabric being wasted every year, this is a pro-active step forward to reduce the 26,000 tonnes of plastic waste in India. 
 The women who will receive your support belong to the most marginalized edges of society, who experience various forms of negligence within their communities and are most often denied access to their basic rights. At home, these women encounter repeated episodes of domestic and gender based violence and are not allowed to experience freedom to choose and live. iPartner India’s experience of working with women shows that when women earn, they are able to effectively break the cycle abuse, pay more attention to nutrition and the health needs of their entire family, educate their children, and are more confident to take part in decision making for themselves and their family. Your support will help resource poor women from West Bengal, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Your support will go towards purchasing sewing machines, setting up a sewing centre and providing marketing support for selling the bags made by these women. The second wave of Covid-19 is sweeping through India with the ferocity of an inferno and we have all sadly seen the haunting, heart-breaking images of death and human suffering that it is leaving in its wake.Well over 300,000 positive cases each day - the highest figures recorded in any country at any point during the pandemic.  Deaths are soaring and the makeshift pyres being constructed on pavements outside crematoriums are a grim reminder that the official death toll is probably grossly underestimated.In cities across India, the tragedy is the same. Desperate shortage of beds, oxygen running out, medicines are scarce, ventilators only available for the lucky few. The situation in smaller towns and villages is unimaginable. Last year, thousands of NGOs and their staff stepped in across the country to provide basic food and medical supplies to thousands of migrants and marginalised communities.This time around, the situation is dire. The sudden spike in cases has brought the nation's healthcare system to its knees and urgent funds are needed to support front line workers, migrant families and critically ill COVID-19 patients who are struggling for oxygen support. 
 With many parts of the country on lockdown, requests for basic food rations from vulnerable communities we work with are increasing. iPartner India has identified the families of migrants and other vulnerable groups across various states of India who are in the dire need of receiving basic essentials. iPartner India will provide ration support, hygiene kit and basic medicines to such families. There is also an urgent need to provide Oxygen to those needlessly dying in hospitals due to the shortage of it. As critically ill patients are being turned away from hospitals, there is a need to provide essential medicines, food and even oxygen supplies to those struggling to survive at home. We have also been forced to recognise the need to provide immediate and much needed support to our frontline workers. iPartner India will ensure oxygen support to critically ill patients and home based care, medical consultation and treatment to COVID-19 positive person from a vulnerable group or to our frontline workers from NGOs.It is a race against time. We are being flooded with cries for help. Civil society led efforts are the only ones actually reaching people in distress therefore we must not stop and continue our efforts to save lives.
