“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. Isha Vidhya rural schools have been started in villages (under the umbrella of Isha Education, established in 2005) to provide high-quality school education to underprivileged rural children who cannot otherwise access or afford it. Isha Vidhya’s English-medium schools open the door for rural children to prepare for higher studies and to join the workforce. The holistic, activity-based approach of Isha Vidhya’s educational system, nurtures children’s development beyond just academics, ensuring that students realize their full potential and learn in a joyful manner.With 10 schools and over 10,000 students, the members of Isha Vidya actively support and promote education among female children in the villages as a result of which their schools have seen an increased enrolment of girl children.Most of our children are first generation school goers and 59% of our students are on scholarship. The on-going pandemic has severely affected the families of our children. Her father is a farmer and mother is daily wage earner, working under MGNREGA scheme. She is spending her childhood in an atmosphere where people are craving for food; all villagers were suffering with poverty. Mostly men (55%) of this village migrate for searching livelihood opportunity. Girl child education was considered a curse, improper language is used and respect for elders was non-existent.Initially, when she joined the learning centre (Patan Mewan), used to trouble the children, showed disrespect for teacher and girls. After 15 days of her enrolment she had left the learning centre too, felt her freedom has taken away. But teacher didn’t leave the hope, met her parents and brought her back to the centre.   Over time, supervision of teacher, responsive attention of Vishakha and good companionship of other girls has transformed her behavior and positive cultural changes. Now she got learn to respect others and importance of education. Her performance in class has also shown consistent improvement, she has good academic record, always obtain more than 60% marks in quarterly girls assessment. Her performance has also motivated her family to keep her education continue and to treat others with respect. Now she wants to become a doctor.

Ramgarh is one of the Block in the Alwar district, where mostly the Meo-Community lives. In these villages Girls' education is considered a curse, they are more focused on boys' education.
