Help Disabled Children with Shelter & Care

For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Dr. Bhagat prioritizes the health of the seniors and ensures that they receive three balanced meals a day based on their precise health requirements. Need for the fundraiserThe humanitarian mission of SHEOWS is making an impact in the area, as more and more people are being rescued and brought to Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Jai Vakeel Foundation (JVF) is a 75-year-old NGO working with Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (PwID) and aims to integrate them into mainstream society. We have a holistic approach to meet the needs of PwIDs and cater to over 3000 individuals annually, across varying age groups and varying levels of intellectual and other developmental disabilities such as autism, epilepsy, cerebral palsy and visual or hearing impairment. We serve the entire spectrum of intellectual disability from borderline IQ to mild ,moderate ,severe and even the most profoundly challenged students between the ages of 3-50 years .Over the past 75 years ,we have touched the lives of lakhs of children and their families. We provide holistic services to individuals with intellectual disability; under four broad categories: Healthcare,Education,Skill Development &amp; Support services.We have seen that access to medical, educational and support services for the intellectually disabled makes their lives much more manageable and meaningful, not only for themselves but for their families and the wider society.

Children with Intellectual Developmental Disability are 2.5 times more likely to contract COVID-19. To safeguard them from the ill-effects of the pandemic, Jai Vakeel Foundation has moved their Vocational Training Program online due to the severity of the situation in Mumbai. Your contribution of ₹1,300 can ensure online vocational training for one of the 85 students currently enrolled in the program, for a month. The consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have been severe and continue to be so. COVID-19 has been disruptive to many families, but the effects of sudden closures and social distancing are further amplified for families of children with disabilities. A New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) report has put Intellectual Developmental Disability (IDD) as a major risk factor for dying from the virus. People with IDD are more than 2.5 times more likely to contract Covid-19.Our students are not immune to the tensions around them. Confined to their homes, they are observing both, the situation unfold, as well as their parents and family members grapple with stressors. 
 It's been 16 months since schools have been shut. We found ways to adapt and ways to work around our current situation knowing that it isn’t enough.After ensuring the well-being of our students last year, we moved onto the challenge of ensuring that their education and development did not falter. Our digital content library was launched and complemented with online classes which were rolled out to students of Vocational Training Centre. The Team worked together to move our entire curricula online quickly and effectively while doing our best to continue meeting the needs of each student. We kicked off the new school year in June with a week of training both for our special educators and caretakers. Workshops were conducted on delivering curriculum online, lesson plans, tech handling, counseling of parents to handle their ward, etc. Provision was made for Smart Phones and Data recharges for teachers and students who needed it.Online sessions are conducted daily covering topics such as Personality development,Life Skills,Culinary and House Keeping Skills, Mathematical Skills.A COVID vaccination drive for the 1st dose for our Students above 18 years of age and their family members on our campus. Along with being highly susceptible to COVID-19, our students and their families were struggling to get vaccinated due to immense logistical &amp; financial issues and this was a big relief to all of them. 
 The Vocational Training Program is a 3 year Program for Young Adults with Mild and Moderate Grade of IDD with a clear focus on developing and enhancing their employability skills and to place a greater number of students in open or sheltered placement at the end of the program. Currently 85 students are enrolled in this Program.Due to Covid-19 pandemic and the severity of the situation in Mumbai and given the vulnerability of our students it is important to provide the accessibility of online learning to support our students and their families.The Online sessions will ensure that we deliver a structured curriculum to our students to enhance their skills which can be also be imbibed in their daily lives resulting in productive engagement at home.

Support Vocational Training Program for Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Intellectual and Developmental disabilities (IDD) is characterized by significant impairment in cognitive and adaptive behaviour. In India, 2% of the population that is one in every 50, over 26 million people suffer silently with their intellectual disability (ID) Source : NIEPID. Though affecting such large numbers, we as a society in general, are still largely unaware of the space and not actively addressing their needs. Children With IDD need help with adaptive skills, which are skills needed to live, learn, work, and play. They frequently have other associated disorders such as Autism, Epilepsy, Cerebral Palsy, Visual Impairment and or Hearing Impairment. Comprehensive and Holistic Assessment enables understanding of underlying Medical or Genetic Conditions and plan intervention that the Child requires and also Identify the supports the child needs to function at Home, at School/Work and In the Community. Early healthcare Interventions can also lead to significant improvements in Cognitive, Academic and Social Outcomes and prevent further complications. Lack of understanding of IDD Often means that families fail to accept the diagnosis or obtain treatment and It is important to counsel families and help them come to terms with their Child’s disability and move towards acceptance. 
 Healthcare program acts as the nerve center at Jai Vakeel Foundation. It is the first touch-point, where every new student comes for diagnosis and one-on-one therapy. JVF has a multi-disciplinary team of Pediatricians, Psychologists, Occupational therapists, Physiotherapist, Speech Therapist and Social Workers and access to the city’s leading Pediatric Neurologist and Psychiatrist to provide Healthcare services to our students free of cost..Every child who joins Jai Vakeel Foundation undergoes a multidisciplinary assessment which is a comprehensive assessment across different domains of development. This assessment forms the basis for the intervention provided by the healthcare team subsequently.We have a team of experienced therapists who provide therapy to our students to improve speech, behavior and gross and fine motor functions based on the needs of the students. These therapies can greatly enhance quality of life by improving activities of daily living, mobility, adaptive behaviour skills, communication etc. Home Programs are given to parents to work with their children effectively in their home environment.Medical Consultations :Provision of medical consultations in the field of pediatric neurology, psychiatry and dentistry through consulting and inhouse doctors based on the needs of the students.Parent Counseling &amp; Guidance :Parents are counseled with a view to improving the quality of their personal lives as well as to equip them to better manage their children. We focus on how parents must become co-trainers with us in their child’s developmental journey, and the importance of parents beginning to think about the future of their children in all aspects. We also educate the parents on the various government schemes that individuals with IDD and theirfamilies have a right to avail. 
 At Jai Vakeel, our vision is Inclusion of all Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.(PwIDD).We hope to achieve this vision by expanding the PwIDD’s set of capabilities, that is, the set of things that they can do and become, by building the capabilities of their parents/caregivers, and by sharing what we learn from this experience with the wider ecosystem. Through our Healthcare Program we create Holistic improvement in our Students by working on their activities of daily living, mobility, adaptive behaviour skills, communication etc. and empower parents to be able to manage their child's disability and become co-trainers in their child’s developmental journey.

In India, 2% of the population; i.e. one in every 50, or over 26 million people suffer silently with their intellectual disability. There is a lack of awareness about Intellectual disability and lack of access to healthcare in rural areas .Children suffering from neurological disorders are not diagnosed or provided proper intervention in these areas.Intellectual disability (ID), is a generalized neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by significantly impaired intellectual functioning (such as learning, problem solving, judgement) as well as adaptive functioning (activities of daily life such as communication and independent living). Individuals with ID have an IQ under 70 (Normal IQ is 90-100) in addition to deficits in adaptive behaviours that affect their everyday life. 
 Since 2010, Jai Vakeel Foundation, organizes successful pediatric neurological medical camps across the districts of Maharashtra where trained doctors and medical professionals help families understand and identify Intellectual disability in young children. The team consists of paediatric neurologists, psychologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech therapists, nutritionists, ophthalmologists &amp; EEG technicians,orthotist. The team of doctors is headed by Dr. Anaita Udwadia Hegde (Consultant Pediatric Neurologist at B.J. Wadia Hospital for Children and Jaslok Hospital).We identify on ground partners - local NGOs , therapists and doctors who continue to support the child and the family after their initial diagnostic intervention with the aim to integrate them into mainstream life. In the past 9 years, approximately 20,000 consultations have been done across 12 districts in Maharashtra (primarily Nanded &amp; Dhule), many of whom might have otherwise not received proper intervention and remained unattended. We conduct 4 camps every year (2 in Nanded and 2 in Dhule). 
 Jai Vakeel Foundation reach out to 2500 children with Intellectual &amp; developmental disabilities annually through these rural camps to:Identify and treat children with neurological problems.Provide free investigations like EEG, MRI, and CT scans.Provide free medication for neurological problems.Provide free nutritional supplements and counsel parents.Train and educate families regarding therapeutic intervention .Provide free orthosis to help in mobility of the child. Follow-up after six months at the same district.

Rural Pediatric Medical Camps to Identify & treat Intellectual Disability for children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD)

Though affecting such a large number, we as a society, are still largely unaware of the space and not actively addressing the unique needs of the intellectually disabled.The consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have been severe and disruptive to everyone, but the effects of school closures and social distancing are further amplified for families of children with disabilities. Schools remaining closed are particularly hard for parents of children with Intellectual developmental disabilities [IDD] because learning at school for them, is supported by a team of professionals such as special educators and therapists and by specialized teaching methods. 
 In the normal circumstances, our Centre would have reopened in mid-June, however due to Covid-19 pandemic and the severity of Covid-19 situation in Maharashtra, we had no clarity on when our students would return to the Centre. It was therefore important to consider the accessibility of online learning to support our students and their families.To ensure learning continues, we have worked together to move our entire curricula online quickly and effectively and are conducting group and individual online sessions for our students. We are conducting a combination of an online and offline model, with the aim of providing the students with familiarity both in terms of the teacher and content. These online classes ensure the same teacher teaching the children and the offline content and supplementary material reinforcing their learning.
