"My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. After being thrown out of their often abandoned by their own children and are forced to beg for food and shelter. “Through Project Jeevan, Maitri houses aging widow mothers in two ashrams in Vrindavan and Radhakund (Mathura), providing them with wellness and well-being. The programme also reaches out to widow mothers beyond the ashrams with fruit, milk and healthcare services,” explains Winnie Singh, co-founder and executive director, Maitri India.Save homeless elderly widows from begging on the streetsMost widows who make their way to Vrindavan are abandoned by their families, often after years of abuse. They come here hoping they will spend the rest of their days in prayer and devotion. But most live in impoverished conditions on the streets and in dingy rooms. In the year 2000, a group of volunteers decided to fight for justice for the death of one child and two Dalit laborer’s in an illegal unit of firecrackers in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh. The volunteers decided to come together as an organization, and Jan Sahas (meaning People's Courage) was born.Initially focused on building awareness and community empowerment to end manual scavenging, today we strive to eliminate sexual violence and forced labour, and empower survivors of such violence. We are particularly focused on the most excluded social groups, including those facing gender and caste violence. Jan Sahas has been working to end sexual violence against women and children (SVWC) for over a decade, using strategies that have evolved and grown as understanding of the issue has deepened. Jan Sahas’ work on SVWG has emerged from its ongoing work to liberate women from caste and gender based slavery and further towards empowering survivors and those who are at most risk to fight the war against SVWG. Jan Sahas’ goal is to strike at the roots of gender injustice, to facilitate bottom-up social change, and to achieve liberation from a mindset that pervades society in order to ensure dignity and justice for all children and women.Jan Sahas believes that such fundamental change can occur only if prevention, response and rehabilitation are tackled simultaneously through a holistic approach to SVWG. Since changing hearts and minds is at the core of what Jan Sahas wants to achieve, much of the work is done with young people and through community mobilization. Malnutrition is among the gravest problems in the remote areas of India. “Batiya Baadi’ is one of such village in the Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh. According to data from the National Family Health Survey IV, the tribal Jhabua district has 45.6 per cent malnutrition rate, while the state's average is 40 per cent. Jhabua geographically divided into villages that are further divided into many ‘Faliyas (hamlets)’.One such faaliya is Sigaad Faliya of Batiya Baadi Village which suffers a major crisis in terms of malnutrition among children and pregnant women. Since birth, children are found under tragic condition of malnutrition and sanitation; hygiene condition make them vulnerable to poor health. Poor public infrastructure and amenities further complicate the condition of the villagers. Usually, villagers migrate for their livelihood and leave their children behind which makes them even more vulnerable to severe health conditions. 
 Jan Sahas' team recognized that a problem as complex as malnutrition can not be dealt by a single method. Hence, we use a variety of interventions to cater to this problem. As anganwadi workers are among the most important stakeholders in this process, we make constant efforts to improve their involvement in our processes to make them sustainable. Our main interventions to deal with malnutrition in Jhabua are:<ol><li>Health Check-ups and Distribution of supplements: Through regular check ups of children between age 0 to 5, pregnant and lactating women, we try to ensure that no child or mother is left behind with chances of malnutrition. When we come across cases of potential malnutrition, we initiate the counselling of mothers towards following instructions to ensure balanced diets, preparing and feeding supplement and following good hygiene practices.</li><li>Awareness and Consciousness Raising: We arrange awareness camps and hold community meetings with families and anganwadi workers around healthy practices as simple as washing hands, boiling water, rinsing vegetables etc. We additionally provide information on common diseases and ways to prevent them.</li><li>Medical tests and treatment: In cases of severe malnutrition of children, anemia in pregnant or lactating women or complications in pregnancy, we provide medical assistance to the patient by shifting them to "Choithram Hospital" a leading hospital specialized in neo-natal and post-natal facilities. The treatment is being carried out free of cost to the patient.</li></ol>

Initiative for Ensuring Nutrition Among Children in Jhabua District of Madhya Pradesh

India has the greatest burden of mental and behavioral disorders. Every sixth Indian needs mental health care. The treatment gap for these disorders ranges between 70% and 92% (NMHS, 2016). The communities we work with deal with intense trauma in their day-to-day lives. Yet, many stay deprived of adequate mental health rehabilitation they require to get back on their feet. To bridge this gap, Jan Sahas has developed an in-house counselling unit to foster resilience among our communities and ensure they have access to mental health care at the grassroot level. 
 Over the past two decades, Jan Sahas has worked in 116 districts across 13 states of India to improve the socio-economic status of India’s most marginalized groups, particularly migrant workers, survivors of sexual violence, manual scavengers, and individuals affected by caste-based commercial sexual exploitation. Jan Sahas’s interventions are anchored around promoting community leadership, a people-centered participatory approach, and equal opportunity for women with a special focus on girls. Through an inclusive, affirmative and trauma-informed approach that’s centered around communities, our focus is on increasing accessibility to mental health care with the help of individual and group psychosocial support provided by trained barefoot and professional counselors. Our core focus remains to provide our communities the following: <ul><li>Psychological First Aid: Initial psychosocial support following a crisis event to ensure safety and access to required resources</li><li>Psychoeducation: Essential education and information regarding causes, treatment, and prognosis to increase understanding of experienced mental health concerns</li><li>Crisis Interventions: Immediate and short-term support to stabilise distress and restore functioning provided by trained professionals</li><li>Counseling and Psychotherapy: Long term, ongoing, goal-directed mental health support to enhance psychosocial wellbeing</li></ul>

The impact of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) is severely being felt in various sectors across the world. In India, the effect of COVID-19 is visible on businesses and the economy of the country. While every section of society is affected by the current crisis, it has terribly impacted the unorganised sector where most of the employment is contractual. In India, nearly 400 million people are employed in this sector and their livelihood is dependent on daily wages. During this crisis, the transportation facilities have also been locked down as a result of which migrants are now trapped at the destination with not enough amenities left to tide over the situation. The migrant workers are at high risk of health issues, hunger crisis and unemployment.A staggering 77% of India’s workforce (3 out 4 workers) falls under the category of vulnerable employment (World Bank, 2019). Most of these people are seasonal migrants who are now forced to return to their hometowns, due to lack of financial support. Major migration corridors are linked to the cities which are currently most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. 
 <blockquote>While we are safely locked in our homes, they are walking thousands of miles just to reach home. While we use this time learning new dishes from the internet, there are those waiting for their next meal!</blockquote>Jan Sahas with more than 600 team members on filed, is trying it's best to provide support to the most vulnerable social groups particularly migrant labour and their families in 48 districts of Delhi-NCR, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar and Maharashtra.Through this fundraiser, our target is to support 3,000 families of migrant workers across seven states of India. With India reporting a record-breaking surge in coronavirus cases, the country is witnessing yet another nationwide migrant exodus, as states begin imposing curfews and lockdowns to contain the spread of the deadly infection. In scenes reminiscent of the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic in India, thousands of workers are leaving for their hometowns and villages, fearing that they will lose their housing and livelihood if they remain in big cities. Now more than ever, we have to come together as fellow citizens and respond to this emergency. 
 During the first wave of COVID-19 last year, through generous support from concerned citizens and organizations across the world, we were able to support more than 1 million vulnerable individuals in India. With your help, we want to support 50K of the most vulnerable households with dry ration, safe transportation, healthcare &amp; direct cash transfers. With our social registry of 1 million households across 11 states, today we are in a position to provide targeted relief to the most vulnerable households, among a larger set of people who are already very vulnerable, to begin with. Our priority is to support women-headed households, women who are pregnant or have young children, survivors of forced labour and sexual violence. Additionally, we are also providing assistance and necessary information to the families with immediate needs through Jan Sahas Mazdoor Helpline Number (18002000211). 
 Our estimated budget is INR 15 crores to provide relief to these 50K most vulnerable households.
