Jharkhand, India

Neelam Besra, a tribal woman from a cluster of villages near Churchu, Jharkhand, fought all odds to pursue education up to graduation level. In her teens, she observed her friends dropping out of school due to girl child marriage. This pushed Neelam, a teenage girl then, to start working for girl child education. In early 2002, with less than Rs.1000 in hand,  she founded ‘Jharkhand Mahila Utthan’ along with few like-minded people from her  community. This women-led organization was built to focus on issues faced by the tribal population in the region, especially in the sector of development, gender and education. The organization works in 12 panchayats, with over 10,000 women and adolescent girls from Churchu and Dari blocks of Hazaribagh district.
