“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. That was the day I knew my mission in life was to get these children out of the hell-like conditions in red-light areas. We are a non–profit grassroots organization based in Kotri village in Ajmer district, Rajasthan. Started in 1998, we have been working on diverse local issues related to Sustainable Development and empowering marginalized and excluded communities in 120 villages in Ajmer, Nagaur and Jaipur districts. Kotri is a water-scarce area due to declining groundwater resources. Owing to its proximity to the Sambhar Salt Lake, it is distinguished by the prevalence of brackish water, which further intensifies the strain on the limited water resources. This highly saline water is unfit for human consumption. Besides the acute shortage of water, the communities residing in and around this area also face severe social, economic, political and other environmental challenges. Our philosophy is to bring about equality and equity through a rights and needs based approach. Through this approach and our various projects, we work to empower backward castes, nomadic tribes, women and adolescent girls, children, youth and small farmers, who have been victims of discrimination and excluded from mainstream society.

The Covid-19's devastating effects pushed 1000 families in Manthan's catchment area into extreme poverty. Marginalized in nature, these families faced higher levels of distress in the pandemic. They lost their livelihoods, had to face the difficulty of barely getting 2 meals a day, and were unable to take care of their children. Rendering many children homeless and orphaned, currently, there are 3000 children in the age group of 6 to14 years who have no source of education and are not enrolled in any school. More than 100 children among the 3000 are either orphaned or have lost the main breadwinner of the family and have only one parent. With no one to take care of them, these children are at a high risk of being exposed to child labour, trafficking, and abuse. 
 Manthan plans to run a residential hostel on its campus, where some of the most marginalized children can be cared for and nurtured. Owing to the migrant nature of their families, these children are unable to get enrolled in a government school. Through this project, Manthan aims to provide a platform to these children where they can study in a safe and secure environment, and do not have to face the harsh realities of dropping out and having gaps in their schooling. At Manthan, we deeply understand the importance of education which resulted in this project. This hostel will not only provide children with regular meals and education facilities but also a safe, enabling, and thriving environment that encourages them to build a solid future. We have been running a hostel program for some children from vulnerable groups over the last year but are in need of funds to continue running this program.
