For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. “The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. In India, we have 20 million orphaned children and out of these, about 0.3 percent are orphans in the traditional sense – where both parents have passed away (Src: SOS Children’s Village study of 2011). The rest are children who have been abandoned, rescued from child trafficking or child marriage, children who are lost, children growing up in abusive family environments, etc. An appalling number of 2.38 lakhs orphans live in Institutions ( children’s homes) both private and government in India (NCPCR, March 2018). There are 20,000 parents waiting to adopt a child, while only 1991 children available for adoption. Surprisingly, 80% of these kids have a living family member. Most families wouldn’t leave their children in institutions if they had the right support to care for them. The fact is, many children are in orphanages because their families are poor and can’t afford to feed or educate them. This is no reason to be institutionalized. Ask any child and they will tell you that their biggest dream is to be a part of a loving family — it's where they thrive. 
 Miracle Foundation India is a registered not-for-profit organization under section 25 of the Companies Act. We empower orphans to reach their full potential. Our goal is for every child to live in a loving family; to become a healthy, happy, self-sustaining person—and experience a true sense of belonging. Each child living in a Child Care Institution in rural and semi-urban areas supported by Miracle Foundation India receives the highest quality of care and services in the areas of nutrition, education, health, child protection etc.We support children with access to quality education by providing them with coaching support, education materials, school supplies, English language classes, and library &amp; computer literacy programs. For children in classes 9 &amp; above, career assessment is conducted. Support is also provided for higher education and vocational training/skill development, and transition programs are done to ensure that the child is ready for independent living after the age of 18 years. Over the years, we have found that the inability to provide education is a major reason why parents send their children away and hence, Miracle will continue to take care of the basic needs till the family is self-sufficient.	 
 Since 2011, Miracle Foundation India has impacted the lives of more than 7000 children across 7 states in India - Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, and Kerala. We ensure that orphans are educated, fed, loved and safe. About 99% of children we support are first generation learners. Our education strengthening program is very elaborate and covers every step from ensuring primary education to remedial classes to computer education to making sure each child receives an opportunity to attend college. The importance of education in becoming independent, income-generating adults and breaking the cycle of poverty is given utmost importance.- We have an impressive high school pass rate of 98% to that of 52% of Indian children (Source: UNESCO,2016)- Over the years, we have been able to ensure 100% school enrollment of our children compared to 55% of Indian children- Children are equipped with computer education and English language training to increase the chances of employability and hence break out from the cycle of poverty- Every child is supported to reach the highest level of education of which they are capable- Children home has an environment that fosters learning- The educational base of children is strengthened, and children have a clear direction and roadmap of higher education and career goals

Many of these children lost their families early on in their  lives, thousands were separated due to poverty to end up in institutional care and then there were those who never found their way home. It is disbelieving that 80% of these children have a living parent or a family member who can take care of them if given the right support. Yet, they languish in the four walls of a childcare institution . 
 For more than two decades, Miracle Foundation has been working with institutionalized children to help them return to families and meet their rights of family care, education, mental health, healthcare and safety among others.
