Our organisation, Mumbai Mobile Creches, is a 46-year old non-profit working with children of migrant workers living on construction sites in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane. We provide comprehensive day care programmes focused on improving the educational, nutritional and health status of these children. We reach to children of ages birth to 14 years and Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) is a key area of focus. Currently we are running 18 centres to reach average 900 children every month living on construction sites in Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

In lieu of better working conditions, a vast majority of the population working in the unorganised sector choose to migrate within the country. Migrants in urban India form a large majority of the work force in the unorganised sectors where they work as construction workers, electricians, plumbers, masons, security personnel, etc. These migrant labourers are usually the most vulnerable and marginalised of the urban poor. Because of the issues like- lack of housing facilities, low wages, expensive housing, overcrowding and a lot more, the migrants are marginalised even further. Children of migrant construction workers are even more vulnerable. Because of the extreme poverty of their families, their parents are constantly working and thus, these children are left to fend for themselves. They suffer from malnutrition, undernourishment, accidents, innumerable health problems and are deprived of formal schooling, day care centres or any sort of support system. MMC adopts a multi-pronged approach to address these issues.
