As a part of our efforts to convert Dantewada into 100% organic district, last year 110 villages had passed resolutions to be declared as organic and we had submitted an application to GoI under Large Area Certification (LAC) program. It was a result of traditional tribal wisdom coupled with years of collective efforts. No farmer uses chemical inputs in these villages which cover almost 50% area of the district. The government had then constituted a high level expert committee to review the application. On 11th October, this committee traveled to Dantewada, visited the field, interacted with the farmers, reviewed the processes followed. In a meeting that followed next day, chaired by the Special Secretory of Agriculture of Chhattisgarh the committee has decided to recommend GoI to certify 110 villages and total area of 65,000 Ha as organic. If remaining formalities go well, this will be the biggest area certified as organic in India under LAC and first of its kind in mainlands. Fingers crossed but hopeful 😊

Recommendation by expert committee to certify 110 villages of Dantewada as Organic

<ul><li>In Dantewada the government has stopped promoting or distributing chemical inputs as a result of the collective work done so far</li><li>In 110 villages of the district no farmer has used chemicals for past five years</li><li>The newly released guidelines of Large Area Certification (LAC) allow for organic certification of entire villages like these in one go</li><li>So, as a step towards the vision of organic Dantewada we decided to focus on certifying these villages under LAC in year 2021-22</li><li>But it was a humongous task which involved reaching out to twice the geographical area of our current engagement with the same team, engaging with Gram Panchayat bodies and every farmer of the village </li><li>Our resource persons facilitated discussion on organic farming in Gram Sabhas across the district </li><li>The resolutions were passed in these 110 villages through Gram Sabha to prohibit any usage of chemical inputs and declare the village as organic</li><li>Village level committees were also formed, empowered to keep the vigilance about usage of chemical inputs</li></ul>

Kerala has faced its worst natural disaster in the last 100 years and scores of individuals, organisations and corporates have come forward to support the victims through their donations and volunteering. The rescue and relief activities have almost come to an end and people have started returning to their homes, rebuilding their lives again. However, it is not easy. Thousands of children have lost all their school books, notebooks and other requirements and as one of the teachers shared, are now reluctant to go to school due to the lack of such basic requirements, leading to low attendance in spite of the floods receding and the schools being reopened. As per the initial official estimate, 379 schools have been damaged, including government and government aided schools, affecting more than 86,000 students. 
 Nirmaan has visited various flood affected areas and relief camps in Thrissur and Ernakulam districts in Kerala and talked to the teachers, parents and students, also visiting the student's homes. We have also met the honourable education minister, Mr. C. Raveendranath, and director of public instruction, Mr. MV Mohan Kumar, IAS and spoken about our education support program. They have welcomed it wholeheartedly and have extended their support. Kerala, with its traditionally high emphasis on education, has already shown its commitment towards restoring education through printing of 36 lakh text books, promise of uniforms to students and reopening of schools within days of the disaster. In the first phase, we will compliment the efforts of the government by providing other school necessities such as notebooks, stationery, geometry box and sanitary napkins for girls as a part of 'educational kits' to support students across primary and secondary levels in the 2 districts of Thrissur and Ernakulam. The next step is to support infrastructure restoration of schools damaged by floods. 
 In the first phase, we are aiming to reach out to 3000 students in the two districts with educational kits and support them to return to schools with dignity.

Kerala Floods Rehabilitation - Education Support Program

COVID-19 is an emergency, on a scale we have not seen before. Till date, India has witnessed more than 26 lakh positive cases with alarming increase in the number of new cases every day.There is a huge need to initiate action on 2 fronts – Medical and Community. Under Operation Sahaaya, Nirmaan is coordinating with various Government departments (the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Telangana, Cyberabad Commissionerate, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Women and Child Welfare etc.) to understand the immediate needs of the government to counter and control this situation. On the economic front, the pandemic has badly hit the informal sector, which comprises of almost 80% of India’s workforce, including 1/3rd of them working as casual labourers. The Covid-19 curfew has robbed daily wagers of their daily income and quickly depleting their savings. Though the Govt. has announced various schemes and relief packages to help the nation’s poor to tackle the financial difficulties during the Covid-19 outbreak, especially the migrant labourers and daily wage labourers, the need and demand for the same is much higher and immediate.There have been lot of activities going on for the relief work, its been more than 4 months since the economy has come to a standstill. As a result, many of the families, especially those belonging to lower income strata have run out of their savings and are struggling for their very survival.This situation again demands a proactive and aggressive action. We are reaching out to you for your support in strengthening our response to this pandemic by facilitating the livelihoods of underprivileged communities, leading to income generation for their families. 
 Amid the shortage of one of the most essential commodities in market right now, we have initiated a project to donate reusable facial masks for the essential public services personnel and institutional staff like the Police and Anganwadi workers who have kept the State’s critical system functional through the COVID-19 outbreak and the lockdown. We will also be donating these to the destitute, daily wage workers, vendors, and delivery personnel who play a vital role in our communities.We have been working on the ground plan which includes raw material procurement source, Govt. permits where necessary and required training to our team. We have onboarded a public health expert to verify the process. Majority of the cloth being procured as raw material and readymade masks are purchased from the ‘Weavers Societies”, which would also support the livelihood of weavers during this hour of crisis. The stitching would be done by women students of our vocational training centers. The women will collect the materials from our centers and will be stitching at home, we will be taking all proper/ prescribed protective measures during production/ operations. Women are paid wages as per the number of masks they stitch. We aim to support each women and her family with minimum earnings of Rs. 5000 per month. And they have the scope to earn more based on their time and efforts.The production units follow the assembly line process wherein skilled women expertly prepare masks, do quality checks and packing. The masks would then be delivered through various logistical channels to the clients. Masks will also be sold directly on e-commerce platforms to cover the huge geographical area and locally through various wholesalers and retailers to generate regular income for the women. 
 Through this project, we will create the following impact:<ul><li>Support 40 women and their families with decent livelihoods for next 12 months</li><li>Provide livelihood support to 2 weavers' societies through purchase of quality cloth</li><li>Donate masks to 1,00,000+ frontline essential service personnel and vulnerable communities for their personal protection (3 masks per person)</li></ul>

Mask Making Production Unit run by Women from Underprivileged Communities

Secondary education is that juncture in a child's academic career where they have to have to perform competitively as well as make some important career decisions. However, many times they lack the necessary guidance or support to make such decisions. Since the students have to prepare for global challenges of the 21st century, they need some specific life skills and career guidance support to reach their true potential and lead a good life. 
 The purpose of this life skills and career guidance program is to help each student develop as an individual in his/her own right to make choices and set goals on the basis of his/her strengths by attending to the special needs and requirements of students belonging to different social, economic and cultural backgrounds, thereby leading to their effective transition from school to workforce and higher education. Nirmaan will be implementing this project for the holistic development of all the 9th and 10th students studying in all Government High Schools in 5 districts of Andhra Pradesh - Krishna, Kadapa, Kurnool, Ananthapur and Vizianagaram, during the academic year 2018-19 i.e. approx. 2.74+ lakh students. For implementing this program at such a scale, Nirmaan would require Rs.160 per child. We have received the support of Rs. 80 from the government. To enhance the effectiveness of the implementation, we are raising funds to bridge this gap. 
 Nirmaan is the knowledge partner to the government of Andhra Pradesh to provide life skills and career guidance programs to about 750,000+ students and one of the implementing organizations for this project. Nirmaan is implementing the program on-ground in 5 districts - Krishna, Vijayanagaram, Anantapur, Kurnool and Kadapa, serving about 274,000+ students across 1949 Government High Schools.The first phase of the project ends on 31st March 2019.

Life Skills and Career Guidance to Students in AP Government High Schools

A Higher Primary School Veerenahalli has toilets built many years back. Because of the poor construction, the toilets are not in working condition and the teachers as well as students cannot use the washrooms.The plight of the girls is unimaginable.The major problems are :<ul><li>Non-existent or insufficient water supply, sanitation and hand washing facilities.</li><li>Toilets or latrines that are not adapted to the needs of children, in particular girls.</li><li>Broken, dirty and unsafe water supply, sanitation and hand washing facilities.</li><li>Children with poor hygiene and hand washing practices.</li><li>There is no drinking water facility for the students.</li></ul>Under these conditions, schools become unsafe places where diseases are transmitted. One of the major problems faced by school age children is infection of parasites and flukes. These and other diseases, often sanitation related, obviously, contribute to absenteeism, but there is a more hidden aspect: Poor health of children affects their ability to learn and therefore influences their perspective in life. Good health at school is essential for now and an investment for the future. 
 The project will construct 6-8 child-friendly toilets in the school. Children will have proper sanitation facilities just like any private school does. We will connect water from nearby water sources using water supply pipes. Children need not go in open area for washroom. Girls need not dread coming to school.We will construct toilets and provide:<ul><li>Adequate amount of easy to maintain latrines (special units for boys, girl and teachers)</li><li>Separate toilets for girls and boys</li><li>Adequate amount of hand-wash facilities near the latrines and inside the schools.</li><li>Facilities for drinking water</li></ul> 
 Providing hygiene and sanitation facilities in school will create an enabling school environment and children's regularity to school will be improved. Awareness of hygiene and sanitation will increase and children will have fewer instances of illness. Drop out rate, especially among girls will come down.
