“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. The Parikrma Humanity Foundation was started by Mrs. Shukla Bose in 2003, with the aim of providing quality education to children from the slums of Bangalore, children who were otherwise unlikely to receive any quality education at all. The single school started by Shukla and a few colleagues on the leaky rooftop of a rented home in a Bangalore slum, has since grown into 4 schools and 1 Junior College catering to 1500+ children. The children are drawn from 100 slums and 5 orphanages in the city. Parikrma follows an end-to-end model, where children enter Kindergarten at age 5 and are nurtured until they graduate from high school at age 18; most of them continue to stay under the care of Parikrma even through their college education, because of the mentoring and scholarships that Parikrma offers them for higher studies. The 360 degree development framework followed at Parikrma covers all aspects of a child’s life, which not only includes academics, viz a stringent CBSE syllabus and English language curriculum,  but also covers all other aspects of the child’s life, such as nutrition (3 wholesome meals daily), comprehensive healthcare (annual general health, dental and eye checkups) and family care programs to ensure a stable home environment.Education at Parikrma tends to go far beyond just academics and class room learning. The environment is designed to stimulate critical thinking and children are encouraged to question rather than just accept. Teachers too are trained to ask open-ended questions rather than deliver lectures, are encouraged to be proactive and experiment with any new teaching methods that they believe will allow them to reach out to their students a little better.Classroom sessions are often complemented by lectures from eminent personalities in a variety of spheres, so as to get children involved in issues outside the classroom.Extra-curriculars such as sports, art and drama flourish at Parikrma as well. The children excel at these activities and consistently win accolades at the district, state and even national level.The impact of this novel approach to the education of under-privileged children has been significant. Standard school level metrics are off the charts, whether in comparison to the Government’s schools for the poor, or main stream schools catering to the privileged sections of society. For instance, over the last 20 years, Parikrma has recorded 96% attendance at all 4 schools, and a dropout rate of less than 1%; parent – teacher meetings enjoy 100% attendance.Perhaps, an even better indication of Parikrma’s impact can be seen by looking at its alumni. Among those who have graduated in the last few years, there are students currently working in management level positions at multinational IT firms, hotel and retail chains and hospitals. Students in later batches are enrolled in Engineering, Law, Hotel Management, Design and Bio-Technology courses.

As India continues to fight the Corona virus, it is clear that we cannot move back to the traditional model of education even after schools open their gates for offline education. Over the last year, Parikrma’s Reach-V™ online school has opened our eyes to some of the benefits of online education. Going forward, the academic team at Parikrma would like to incorporate the best elements of online and offline school, so as to provide our students with the best possible learning experience. Thus, Parikrma is working towards converting its classrooms into virtually enabled ones, equipped with a mobile projector and white screen. This would enable teachers and students to access relevant, high-quality online content, in addition to what is available in traditional textbooks.  As schools in Bangalore start opening up, high school students at Parikrma have returned to our centers on the 23rd August. We would therefore like to convert all the classrooms across our 4 schools and junior college, at the earliest. Each room would be equipped with a mobile projector, a pull-down white board/screen and curtains on the windows in order to prevent daytime glare from sunlight. Parikrma Humanity Foundation runs 4 free K-12 schools for children from 67 slums and 5 orphanages around Bangalore. Our children are first-generation learners from uneducated families where the parents are typically uneducated, working as daily-wage laborers, unskilled workers and petty shop owners; monthly family income is in the range of Rs.10000-12000/month. Thus, the Parikrma 360 degree model is one where our students are not only given education, but also nutrition (breakfast, lunch and a ragi drink in the evening) complete healthcare and family welfare (skilling, counseling, de-addiction etc for the parents). In the current CoViD-19 pandemic, our students have been severely impacted– with school forced to shut down, they no longer have access to the breakfast, lunch and evening snack that was served to them. At home, where a large chunk of their parents have found themselves out of work, or have seen severe fall in earnings, the worsening situation has made access to food difficult. Parents are unable to sufficiently take care of even basic necessities like food and nutrition. It is in this environment that Parikrma proposes to supply weekly food rations to these families to ensure that they get sufficient nutrition during these unprecedented tough times   
 Parikrma proposes to supply, on a weekly basis, each of our families with 3 kg rice, 1 kg dal, 1 kg malt powder,1/2 litre oil and 1 bar of soap, expected to take care of the needs of a 5 member family. These rations would be given to one member of each family at our school premises. Distribution would be done by Parikrma’s Community Services team and teachers volunteering for this purpose. We propose to continue with distribution for the next 4 weeks Parikrma is ensuring that social distancing norms are strictly observed. Since our Community team is in touch with all families via their mobiles, each family is given a specific time to come to the school for collecting their rations. This ensures that we have no more than 3-4 parents waiting outside the school at any time. Only one parent is actually allowed into the school; since rations have been pre-packaged, the actual collection process is very quick and the parent exits the school before the next parent is allowed in. There is a volunteer from Parikrma to ensure that the few parents waiting outside do not congregate, but stand atleast 5-6 ft apart from each other.   
 The project aims to ensure that the students and families of Parikrma obtain atleast basic nutrition in the next few weeks, rather than starving. It would ensure that our students are healthy enough to return to school once this current crisis is overcome and continue with their studies. It would also help parents stay healthy so that they may take care of their families and resume their employment once the lockdown is lifted.

These are extraordinary times and it calls for extraordinary people and extraordinary measures. Parikrma has tried to rise up to this challenge for one reason only. We care. We care about our children and what is happening around us. The terrible inequity in opportunities that exist in society has always troubled us and for that very reason, Parikrma was created in 2003. These last few months have been challenging learning times for us all. We have realized how poor the public health care system is and have further confirmed how fragile and vulnerable our children are. We got propelled into action when news through the lockdown reached us that our children were not getting food. Their parents are daily wage laborers and had stopped earning. Now we are struggling to keep the children online for regular classes because internet charges are high and parents are not able to afford it on a regular basis. 
 We have initially run a campaign to collect used mobile phones and tabs for the children. But the real problem is monthly data recharges for the children to attend online classes. We wish to give all the children Rs. 300 per month to recharge their phones and tabs to attend regular classes till schools reopen completely. Rs. 300 per month (with little variations with different mobile networks) will buy the students 2GB/day of data, which will let them attend 3-4 classes every day. 
 It has required a great deal of effort to get our children to come to school and do their homework regularly in the past 17 years. We realized that we could not allow our children to lose touch with their teachers and schools. They would then surely drop out of school and give up their studies. We needed to think fast about how to get our children connected with us quickly. While privileged children can continue their studies through technology our children do not have computers and the Internet at home. with our Reach-V initiative, we have made the teachers go online to keep our students engaged, and with your help, they can continue to do so. Your donation will impact over 1700 children enrolled in Parikrma schools for at least two months.

Educate for change- Help underprivileged children go online

The communities Parikrma serves hail from the poorest slums in urban Bangalore. Most of these families had a monthly income of between Rs.10000 – 12000 before the lock down was imposed. In May-June 2020, more than half Parikrma households reported no income at all. More than 85% families reported income loss during the lock down period due to reduction in wages or losing part-time jobs. The income loss has been significant at more than 90 percent of total monthly income. It is therefore essential that we step up our efforts, focusing on the skilling programs for women in order to provide succor from the sudden drop in income. 
 As part of the ‘Circle of Life’ model we have been providing healthcare, psychological assistance, financial literacy and skilling sessions to our parents, to effect a positive shift in their financial status and thus the standard of living of these families. We conduct regular skilling sessions for mothers of our students focusing on ensuring employ ability in vocations like tailoring and embroidery, beautician courses, basic computer training and cooking. Our objective is to scale up our endeavors to provide vocational skill training to Parikrma mothers. We plan to train about 250 mothers in tailoring, embroidery, beautician and basic computer courses over a period of 3 months starting October 2020. 
 In the last 2 years, we have trained almost 500 women from the communities we serve, and these women are currently earning in the vocations they were trained in. They have emerged as valuable contributors to their family’s finances and have gained immense self confidence. We wish to enable more Parikrma mothers to assert their rights and achieve some degree of financial freedom. This way they can provide better care and meet the needs of their children and be the drivers of change in the family and community at large. We intend to bring about this positive change in more Parikrma families, helping them to escape the cycle of poverty.
