This has become a practice in today's society that money comes first and everything else later,” says Winnie whose Maitri India, rescues widowed mothers from the streets of Vrindavan.Many widowed elderly mothers often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Dr. Bhagat prioritizes the health of the seniors and ensures that they receive three balanced meals a day based on their precise health requirements. Need for the fundraiserThe humanitarian mission of SHEOWS is making an impact in the area, as more and more people are being rescued and brought to Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. Paripurnata, a nonprofit organization, established the first Halfway Home in Eastern India in 1992 for women with mental disorders, who had been confined in the jails and mental hospitals. In our Halfway Home, so called, because it is the mid-point in a person’s journey from her place of confinement to her home in a family like ambience, individuals are guided to pick up the lost pieces of their lives, which prepares them for their natural home and help them integrate in to their community and the wider society, so that they once again can lead a productive and meaningful life.

As a child Sabita showed early signs of a mental disorder, never speaking to anyone but her mother. After her father’s sudden death, both Sabita and her mother’s mental condition deteriorated.  They were both admitted to a hospital but Sabita’s mother was unfortunately not strong enough to survive what she was going through and died. 

In the face of such adversity, Sabita was brought to the Paripurnata centre in 2000 to receive therapy. Not completely alone however, as her cousin often paid her visits while she stayed here.

After we discharged her, our team continued her rehabilitation with regular follow-ups to maintain her mental stability. Her cousin, who we had hoped was taking her recovery as serious as we were, betrayed Sabita’s trust as she attempted to steal her property. Paripurnata came to her rescue and ensured she built a strong case to succeed in legal proceedings. Today, she is living with a care-taker and handling all her own property.

Sikha Sengupta from Ranaghat, West Bengal was one of nine siblings and belonged to an underprivileged family. Her mental condition began to deteriorate in 1977 after she witnessed her brother drown; her behaviour becoming violent and out-of-control. After Sikha visited a number of hospitals, her schizophrenia was revealed and was immediately sent to presidency jail. Eventually, Sikha’s family stopped visiting her and refused to pay for her expensive treatment. 

Paripurnata rescued her from the government hospital and began the process for real medical care. After 9 months spent on improving her mental state at the Paripurnata centre, Sikha recovered and her family once again accepted her into their family unit. After 25 years, she is still living with her family and uses the skills she learnt at Paripurnata to teach people how to make incense, sew, and do block painting.

The mentally ill women from the impoverished and disadvantaged sections of our society, who mostly are neglected, despised and often tortured as unwanted beings in the society. This mindset, far too often determined the isolation and segregation of the mentally ill. They were commonly incarcerated as Non Criminal Lunatics (NCLs) in jails or kept in the mental asylums, where the living conditions were appalling and hardly any treatment or counselling was given to them.  The need to bring about a change in their woeful existence to a socially productive life motivates this project.  
 Paripurnata seeks to bring about a change in the wretched existence of these women, by intervention through psycho-social rehabilitation process. The process comprises medico therapy, socio-cultural therapies and occupational therapies structured to assist them to pick up the lost pieces of their lives.Paripurnata attempts to achieve its goal through its residential programme in a setting known internationally as a Halfway-Home, so named because it is perceived as the mid-point in a person’s journey from her place of confinement to her natural home. At Paripurnata, they undergo the residential rehabilitation programme for a duration spanning from eight to twelve months. On successful completion of the programme, the beneficiaries are rehabilitated with their families / communities.On successful completion of the programme, the beneficiaries are rehabilitated in the society. 
 We wish to create a secured, hygienic, cheerful and above all a humane ambience at the halfway Home which will enables them to strive to lead as socially productive human beings with dignity. Our curriculum also attempts to empower them with social skills and enhance their employability.

Psycho-Social Rehabilitation of mentally ill women

Our residential rehabilitation centre offers free medical facilities, therapies, and a shelter for mentally challenged women from underprivileged backgrounds. However, ex-residents need to have regular check-ups to ensure their mental condition is stable after returning to society. 
 This project raises funds to conduct follow-ups and run awareness campaigns in the community so that ex-residents as well as other mentally challenged people don’t face any discrimination and get the support they need to lead a normal life.Even after years of treatment at the residential centre, a patient still needs constant monitoring after being successfully discharged. The response from society is also very important as anything negative could trigger the patient to relapse. 
 Once we have raised enough money we can monitor the progress of all 150 ex-Paripurnata patients. A donation of Rs. 4,350 will take care of one follow-up for one ex-resident.

Sponsor follow-ups for rehabilitated mentally challenged women

Around 125 million people in India fall victim to mental disorders. Unfortunately, there are not enough medical care centres to cater for everyone. Our centre focuses on underprivileged women who are suffering from various mental disorders. Abandoned by their families or spending their lives locked away from their loved ones, these women need proper treatment, regular counseling and lots of love and care. 
 Our residential rehabilitation centre follows a routine that includes free treatment in pharmacotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological counselling . In addition, non-formal education and social & cultural therapy classes are also conducted frequently to improve the patients development. We aim to equip them with social skills ready for successful integration back in to society. These therapies and programmes can take anywhere between 3-5 years for each patient. 
 Every donation will go towards medical therapies, counselling and accommodation for 40 mentally challenged women at our centre. With every donation you can help a mentally challenged woman shake off the shackles of her disability and feel accepted by her society.
