“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. RAIDS working at Peddapanjani Mandal and other two mandals of Chittoor district, AP mainly concentrate on the development of the weaker section like SC and Adhivasi tribal in the interior villages of rural areas. The main objective of the organization is to create awareness and self-employment skills working with the local government in various activities which are more essential for the development of the rural poor. RAIDS has been formed by activists and NGO volunteers who are committed to the social justice, empowerment of traditional, most marginalized communities and creating a lasting social change in the living and working conditions of vulnerable and most deplorable social groups. These activist's who have taken up Adivasi communities issues and struggles on the ground and engaged in social action for over many years have formed this organization in order to respond to social, political, culture and economic, injustice, violations and issues. Historically, the marginalized Adivasi tribal community who have been deprived of their symbiotic relationship with forests, forestry resources, productive land resources, dignified labour with living wages and sustainable livelihood practices. The current exploitative mainstream practices that negatively impinged due to commodification and commercialization of forests.These practices impacts on the dignity and identity of Adivasi communities. The main issues are as follows:<ul><li>Persisting of hunger and malnutrition due to lack of food security.</li><li>Sexual abuse of women and girls</li><li>Prevalent of child marriage is high</li><li>No access to health care and ICDS services in Anganwadi</li><li>Severe acute malnutrition and malnourishment among children and girls and women.</li><li>Tribals are landless.</li><li>Seasonal Migration</li><li>Low wages for men and no equal wages to women.</li></ul>The tribals communities are socially excluded, economically deprived as vulnerable without any support from any other quarters, politically powerless, though culturally rich but silently suppressed by the hegemony of dominant communities. They are living an undignified life without access to basic needs like education, health and nutritional food security, sanitation, water and shelter. Women and children are facing severest and worst forms of violence -sexual abuse, exploitation of manual labour etc.The root cause for the deplorable living conditions and severe malnutrition of children could be attributed to the multiple reasons such as child marriages which lead to childbirth with underweight, continuous child-birth without spacing which heavily impacts on mothers health, lack of food intake of grains and vegetables as they have no affordability due to economic deprivation, no monitoring of village health workers to detect deficiencies on time.Inaccessibility to education: only in 5 villages out of reviewed villages have a primary school. There is no high school in the blocks and there are no residential schools in Chittoor. The teacher to students ratio is much skewed in all Adivasi hamlets.Inaccessibility to health vaccination and prevention of diseases: The main reasons for poor health care are mainly, access to basic health care is absent in the Adivasi villages as well as they do not have health sub-centres. To access to health centres, they have to reach 20 to 60 km as they have to reach to nearby city.
