For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Rural Health Care Foundation (RHCF), an organisation working in the sphere of healthcare since 2009, has been providing high quality and affordable primary medical care to low-income and underprivileged communities of West Bengal. Focused on making healthcare accessible to the poorest and the most deprived, RHCF has 17 centres operating across the state, 12 of which are in remote rural areas. Nearly 60 crore poor in India do not have access to quality healthcare that is affordable. While 78% of the Indian population resides in rural areas, only 2% of medical professionals are available in these areas. Accessibility, quality and affordability of care is a problem for majority of the rural population. Inadequate government funding, shortage of skilled human resources, and absenteeism are some of the major causes. In absence of any organized modern medical facilities, the rural poor fall victim to under qualified doctors in the vicinity of their homes, who extract large sums of money for even basic treatment. 
 Rural Health Care Foundation aims to provide complete basic health care services under one roof, to the Socio Economic base of the Pyramid residing at the densely populated rural areas of Bengal at the most affordable price. Currently, Rural Health Care Foundation (RHCF) has 10 centres spreading across 4 districts of West Bengal, 5 in rural areas and 5 in urban areas of Kolkata. Each of these centres comprises of 4 departments viz General Medicine, Eye Care, Dentistry and Homoeopathy. Each of the department is headed by a Doctor and medical staff. 
 Since Inception till February 2016, 12,59,764 patients have been treated in ten primary health care centres. Our centres arrange cataract surgeries in association with Rotary Eye Hospitals. 8,131 successful Cataract surgeries have taken place so far and 504 cleft lip/palate surgeries for children have been conducted free of cost in association with Smile Train Foundation, Kolkata. RHCF is involved with providing spectacles at lowest rates. Till date; 31,290 spectacles have been distributed among needy patients. Furthermore, to support the poor, needy and physically challenged patients, about 150 Wheelchairs have been distributed, along with 2000 blankets.

High-quality primary medical care can make communities stronger! Easy access to proper healthcare helps people recover quickly and successfully manage chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Primary care is a basic and also one of the most crucial parts of a healthcare system. Yet, the rural communities are often deprived of it. In underserved areas of West Bengal, there is a shortage of quality primary care providers. The high population in rural areas also results in overcrowding in the available units. Substandard care becomes common. It affects the communities' health, which then reduces their quality of life. 
 We make high-quality care easily accessible and affordable for the rural poor! We currently have 9 well-equipped healthcare centres operating in underserved areas. Our centres have general medicine, optometry, dentistry and homeopathy departments. Each of our centres also has a pharmacy stocked with high-quality generic medicines. Patients receive affordable medical consultation at Rs. 100 (a little over 1 USD) along with 1-week's supply of medicines for free. We also provide patients with spectacles at low cost. Cataract and pterygium surgeries are also provided to patients in collaboration with Rotary. To strengthen our patients further, we also offer quick and low-cost blood sugar and haemoglobin tests at Rs. 10 and Rs. 20 respectively. We also have preventive screenings and health education sessions for our patients at the centres. Our centres are set up in areas with good connectivity to transportation. This helps us maximize the reach of our care. Each centre makes high-quality and low-cost primary care accessible to 40+ villages (with 9 centres serving 360+ villages). 
 We focus on empowering rural poor in West Bengal with proper healthcare services. At present we are treating 33000-34000 patients each month. We are also actively striving to expand our reach of care among the poor and underprivileged and are aiming to treat over 50,000 underserved rural communities every month. Our goal is to ensure quick healing and recovery of patients suffering from common acute illnesses, effective management of long-term chronic diseases and better awareness about health and healthier lifestyle among the rural poor.
