Rural Organising for Social Improvement Foundation (ROSI) works towards the development of tribal communities and Dalits living in rural districts of Tamil Nadu. We run projects for women empowerment; educating poor children; providing alternative livelihoods; helping the abandoned elderly; and assisting in legal advocacy for victims of human trafficking or exploitation.Dalits and tribal communities fall into the most marginalised sections of society for reasons such as their primitive education, discriminated status, and limited income. Even worse, some remote areas have to survive without electricity or proper roads connecting them to cities.We supply training in alternative methods of earning a living, such as dairy farming, honey harvesting, and goat rearing. Furthermore, we provide elderly care homes, legal advocacy, and counselling to human trafficking victims.We also provide solar lanterns and huts to those living in the most primal conditions and run crèches and schools where stationery is distributed freely to tribal children.

Tribal children living in the dense forest of the Sirumalai hills with their parents rely heavily upon hunting and collecting food from the forest for their living and so are constantly moving around.

As a result, sending children to school is never a priority. What’s worse, these children often suffer from starvation, poor health, and no education, with little chance to enjoy their childhood.

Here at the ROSI Foundation, we are running a school in the Sirumalai hills where 87 children receive accommodation and education, as well as school supplies.

However, we need to build a larger building in order to accommodate our students and provide them with proper facilities. Every year 100 children are enrolled and educated at our school and we ensure that every single one has food, clothing, medical aid and education.

Building a stable life for tribal children

Nagajothi is 7 years old and lives with her family of five in the caves of the Dirumalai Hills. Their daily meals rarely come from anything else other than hunting the areas wild animals and foraging for wild roots.

The area is mainly comprised of dense forests and is inaccessible to the city as there are no roads. As would be imagined from such a remote location, there was no school or creche services for the local tribal children.

Nagajothi was identified by the ROSI Foundation and enrolled into our residential school in the Sirumalai Hills. She received education, accommodation, healthy meals, and other school supplies like bags, books, and a uniform all for free.

Today she is a healthy, happy girl studying in grade 3 and living in the schools hostel. Her ability to read is only surpassed by her enjoyment of the subject.

Evolving from cave-dwelling to school-living

Manimekalai is a 21-year-old girl who belongs to a very poor family. Her father is a coolie labourer and the family sadly have always lived a hand-to-mouth existence.

She attended school until grade 10 but had to drop out afterwards due to the family’s economic constraints. However, the most horrifying result of Manimekalai’s situation was her involvement with human trafficking and the sexual abuse she suffered as a result.

During one of ROSI Foundations programmes, we saved Manimekalai from a trafficking area. We brought her to one of our centres and encouraged her interest to learn a vocational skill with us in order to start living a normal life.

ROSI enrolled her into our computer training course and paid for her classes as well as for her accommodation. Today, she has grown into a self-sufficient young woman, working within a digital printing business and earning a Rs. 6000 every month.

Most of the elder persons are become as abandoned by their families and relation. The co-family members are seeing them as burden and problem of life. Less care, insulting and other torture are taking the most of aged as destitute in that some of them are begging and remaining are under severe problem due to Unable to earn for their upkeep because of the age. They are weak in health due to age, hunger and health problems. It is difficult for them to get even one meal a day 
 ROSI Foundation stepped in to help. 26 neglected aged persons under the support by Home running. They had a pair of clothes and a plate. When we took them in, they were suffering severely from hunger, ill health; left isolated by their community. They are being provided with food, clothes, medicine, recreation and accommodation. After the home support they are free of the feeling of isolation. They are now with a group in the home with happiness in sharing their thoughts and problems each to other 
 The home will provide a good belief and provision of food, nutrias, health, recreation and safe accommodation to the aged persons till death. funeral is done on their religious belief.

Help 26 elder persons in our Aged Home

At present 26 Neglected aged persons are cared and provided by food, nutrias, health, recreation, safe accommodation and counseling. But hundred of aged people as orphan are requesting us to join in our home and our care and support. We have not own building although we have other infrastructures for the home. So, we are in need of often shifting the home new buildings. Further some facilities to the aged persons could not be arranged. Garden promotion, recreation provision and playing areas are in difficult to arrange in the rental building. Further the home is to be sustaining in its function for the aged persons. So, we construct the aged home building. This is for providing safe accommodation and increasing inmates 
 A building 2000 sqft is required and being constructed for sustainable running of the home with facilities and increasing of inmates.5 bathrooms and 5 latrines are constructed.Separate dining hall, recreation area and yoga centre are established. 
 a. Food and health provision - 3 times food and two times tea/snack are given daily. b. Recreation provision- Playing materials as Caram board and Chess with TV, News paper and Magazine. c. Health provision - monthly once health check up are done. Herbal and traditional medicine will be motivated. Health education on sanitation, hygienic and diet are given. YOGA training is given d. Accommodation - safe accommodation and separate to men and women will be provided with one care taker

Hundred of Tribe families Dindigul district and Theni district are in to caves and interior/ unreachable forest are with poverty and deprivation under endangered condition. there is no basic amenities. In the forest, they have no light, no Radio and can't use cell phone to link to the outer world. Further wild animal disturbing is making place. children's little education is not possible if no lights. Moving to outside in the night is making various problem in to the forest without light. 
 Solar lantern with FM radio is provided to 200 Tribe families, who reside in at risk areas (interior forest). By providing a solar lantern, a family gets lights to habitation, free from wild animals attack, children reading, women cooking, radio running and mobile charging. The people have links with outer world and knowledge about flora fauna. Children reading is performed.

Radio function and mobile will give connection and knowledge about outer world. once provision of solar lights will exist 10-15 years life without maintenance cost. it reduce the fire making of tribe for wild animal and light. it make environment and forest conservation without grid electricity.

Although ROSI's people Chairman, Trustee and staffs are affected by Covid disease, we are involving delicately in prevention of Pendemic disease and relief works among disabled, tribe, aged and daily wages people. Million of poor and daily wage families are loosing their survival. We cover 4 districts in Tamil Nadu among poor, marginal, aged and tribal people. The daily wage people are under risk of starvation and death before COVID disaster. 
 Prevention Kits provision for 10000 families (55000 people) under risk people.Food package provision with prevention kits for 3000 families (15500 people) belonging to daily wage group. 
 These support and activities are giving more prevention from Corvid-19 in sustainable manner because the project will protect them from the disease and disaster. When high risk people are prevented from pandemic, new infection is reduced.Starvation and its death are reduced among 3000 daily wage families when they are assured food and Covid 19 prevention.
