For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. The proposed project will target 20000 people, especially women (including pregnant and lactating mothers) and children from marginalized and disadvantaged families living below the poverty line. The project will also benefit a large population which will include community people and gatekeepers (husbands, mothers-in-law etc). The women beneficiaries between 18-35 and children, newborns 0 to 6 years of age will be sensitized for institutional deliveries and pre and post-natal care. The beneficiaries who are unable to access public health services will be checked initially, then counselled and linked up to public health services through a referral system. Also children beneficiaries will be provided with medical support and guidance.

Health care experts will train approximately 10 traditional birth attendants (TBA or dai) on basic hygiene and first aid, basic prenatal care, simple delivery procedures, and guidelines for referral for high-risk pregnancies. They will also train local leaders to act as volunteers who will participate in the program implementation. </li></ul>
